July 24, 201213 yr I agree. His writing for Take That is pretty excellent stuff (only a few truly duff songs and they were early on). Rule The World, Patience, Never Forget, Pray are excellent songs and you do wonder why he can never replicate the excellent stuff he does for his band for other artists. Who knows - maybe he can only do his best when he's inspired by Jason, Mark and Howard! Either way - his writing for other artists is lacklustre to say the least. Well seeing as Back for Good, Never Forget and Pray were written solely by Gary in his own studio while everyone else in the band were on holiday i'd say that inspiration is not an issue  Rule the World and Patience also have all the blueprints of Gary's writing. I actually thought, along with alot of the reviews of Marcus' album, that Feel Like I Feel was one of the strongest songs on it. As with Blue, Guilty is a very good song and did similarly well in the charts here and abroad. Peter Kay's songs were supposed to be taken as novelty, and Alesha's wasn't that bad but John Shanks wrote the majority of that as ALesha said on a couple of interviews when she was promoting it, Gary and her played about with a couple of lyrics one afternoon. Haven't heard any Delta songs so i won't say anything. With Robbie he has written songs and is the albums co-producer, which I think is a wise move. In past albums after Guy Chambers left no one can deny that Rob has struggled to figure out where he was going musically (rap, electro, 80's etc) and sales and reviews have reflected that. Heart and I was a great little song written by Gary and Robbie so i think that's what you'll see more of in the new album now that Gary is on board in some capacity to rein Rob in a touch as he did with the last TT album, which Rob has himself said was one of his best outputs as an artist solo or in a band Edited July 24, 201213 yr by jay727
July 27, 201213 yr Well seeing as Back for Good, Never Forget and Pray were written solely by Gary in his own studio while everyone else in the band were on holiday i'd say that inspiration is not an issue  Rule the World and Patience also have all the blueprints of Gary's writing. 'Being an inspiration' doesn't mean they have to be in the same bloody room as him as he's writing   ! And I agree - Patience and RTW were almost certainly 99% written by Gary. I'd actually forgotten his songs for Geraldine (which I thought were very good actually - certainly the best he's written for an artist outside of Take That). I do still stand by my assertion however that outside of Take That - Gary's songs are a bit pants (even though I did like one song he did for Katherine Jenkins - even if it was just album filler). Things have gone quiet on the Rob solo album lately! I wonder how many of Gary's songs we'll see! I'm sure Rob fans are waiting with baited breath! I'll bet they're hoping that at least he turns out more of a TT type song (hit) than an Alesha or a John Barrowman (flop) type ditty! Kath Edited July 27, 201213 yr by Kath
July 28, 201213 yr I think and maybe im wrong that Gary keeps the best songs for Take That and i would do the same thing if im been honest. I did like his song for Alesha Dixon although not many people would agree with me and i also liked run for your life by matt cardle, in fact i really liked that and it would be my favorite song of garys for other artists.
July 29, 201213 yr Well the Rob fans that i know are happy that Gary is helping steer Rob in a TT/Old Robbie music way rather than letting Rob bring out another Rudebox or Reality album. So What you're saying Kath is that Gary gets inspiration just thinking about them?  I agree I actually liked the Alesha song and I liked the Matt Cardle song. In fact i'd love to hear someone with a massive voice perform RFYL cos it has potential. The only song Im not mad about is Lighthouse which went to Westlife, but according to Gary he wrote it in The Circus era and it never made the final cut for album tracks/bsides etc. Gary even says on his website that he was surprised when John Shanks called him and asked him whether Westlife could have it as they liked it
July 30, 201213 yr I would say many songs Gary has done for others are left overs that he felt or the Take That camp felt were not strong enough for a Take That album, and Lighthouse reflects this, Westlife were simply crazy to have released Lighthouse over Beautiful World which was a far superior track and one i believe would have sold better than lighthouse which i found extremely bland.

Giving away inferior (or even crap) songs isn't any way to 'justifiably' increase your standing as a songwriter though. Put it this way - take away the songs he's written for Take That - would you rate Gary very highly as a songwriter? I wouldn't. Yet his songs for Take That would easily put him in my top 20 British Songwriters list. I'm going to buck the trend on Lighthouse! I thought it was one of his better non-Take That songs (not great - but certainly one of the better ones he's written for another artist). In fact - I quite liked Lighthouse! Kath
July 30, 201213 yr Well the Rob fans that i know are happy that Gary is helping steer Rob in a TT/Old Robbie music way rather than letting Rob bring out another Rudebox or Reality album. You'll only be talking about the Rob fans who also like Take That! I'd say that the vast majority of Rob fans (who knew nothing of his stuff for TT first time around) would tell you a different story. I have to say - there are three songs on Rudebox that I actually like (and I actually liked them at the time)! Which is one more than the songs I like on the Progress album. Kath
July 30, 201213 yr I have yet to purchase a Robbie album so i cant comment, but i would think some fans wont want a Gary input and others will, it is my belief the songs should stand for themselves regardless of the writers, as there will be people who will make themselves like it because Gary wrote it, and in contrast just hate it because he wrote it, both situations not given the song a merit by itself.
July 30, 201213 yr Yes very true. some people judge on name alon eand not on merit of the song as you say, which i agree is a shame as it means people can often miss out on some great gems.
August 3, 201213 yr You'll only be talking about the Rob fans who also like Take That! I'd say that the vast majority of Rob fans (who knew nothing of his stuff for TT first time around) would tell you a different story. I have to say - there are three songs on Rudebox that I actually like (and I actually liked them at the time)! Which is one more than the songs I like on the Progress album. Kath No Kath, in fact the majority are big Robbie fans alone and don't listen to TT. They nearly all say that if Gary can act as a Guy Chambers to some effect and point Rob in the direction of Sing When You're Winning and Escapology then it can only be a good thing. He needs a big commercial mainstream single off this album cos he hasn't had one really since Feel 3 albums ago or so ago.
August 22, 201213 yr So papers are saying that Gary has helped Robbie write his new single supposedly called 'Vertigo' as lead single from the album with the same name. Wonder what it sounds like in its entirety...it will be getting its first play on september 3rd it seems if you look at his website and read between the lines..
August 23, 201213 yr I never get over excited about Robbie material so even the fact that Gary is writing with him i wont get over excited just yet.I do agree about Robbie needing a mainstream hit, Robbie hasnt had a huge hit in a while and none of the singles he has released in the last few years are memorable.
August 23, 201213 yr Likewise i dont get too excited about new Robbie material but there are some of his songs i really like, it will be interesting to see what the new material sounds like though.
August 23, 201213 yr I suppose I'm more intrigued rather than excited, but at least it will sort of fill the gap till a new Gary/Mark or TT release
August 24, 201213 yr Robbie material wont fill the gap for me, in solo Robbie respect i count it as something completely different and not Take That related at all, that said with Gary writing the lead single with him i might keep my ear open a little bit more than usual.
September 10, 201212 yr Rob's new song, co-written by Gary, and surprise surprise its a very catchy upbeat pop song! Gary's influence is clear here, gone is the Rudebox, Intensive Care, Reality experiments - the song sounds alot like something from the Guy Chambers era Edited September 10, 201212 yr by jay727
September 12, 201212 yr I do like it, and it is the style of song that creeps up on you and you like it more and more.
September 13, 201212 yr What I like about it is that it isnt a Take That song, I'd hate for people to loss distinction between Robbie solo and TT with Gary working with him. Robbie with TT is fine as its still sounds like TT but this song is very much a Robbie song..if that makes sense
