See the problem with On Air/On Sale in the UK was that it was rolled out in the wrong way, with only Universal and random dance acts that nobody had heard of really doing it (+ Jessie J actually). So the minority were doing OA/OS and the majority were still getting their high débuts with held back releases. Combined with radio not realising that they should be patient with OA/OS releases it gave held back releases a massive advantage with airplay and basically meant any OA/OS release by a major artist that had any sort of a tumble down the chart was given the kiss of death. For OA/OS to work in the UK two things are vital. First, everyone has to do it - a level playing field is important. Second, radio needs to wise up a bit and study the US charts. They would need to realise that a song dropping after the first week is natural and not a sign that people don't care about it. But alas, I don't think the UK will try OA/OS again for a long time. Radio and the labels just weren't willing to adapt to it.

^ True with this.

One thing that would concern me though, is that in the US, songs can get to #1 on iTunes, and then not even be in the top 100 on airplay. In the UK this never really happens, because radio follows the charts more. So when Price Tag and Someone Like You shot up to #1 out of nowhere, they did the same on airplay after only 2 or 3 weeks.

Whilst in the US, Moves Like Jagger got to #1 on iTunes over 3 months ago now, I think, and it's only just got to #1 on airplay.

In the UK, hopefully we'd manage a best-of-both-worlds sort of thing.

When 'Move Like Jagger' first debuted at #1 on US iTunes, where did it enter in the Billboard Top 100? It's digital sales alone surely wouldn't have got them to no. 1 without any airplay. Maybe it entered low top 10 then dropped down.

I also agree 100% with Umi. In a weird way, the UK charts in 2009 were just like OA/OS - tracks like 'Poker Face' and 'I Gotta Feeling' entered low and climbed to their peaks. Both these singles eventually hit the #1 spot and have since become million sellers. Yes, notice that these are both American artists. American record companies probably don't care where their singles chart in the UK - as long as they sell, I'm sure they would happy with a 'Love The Way You Lie' massive selling #2 hit than a Cher Lloyd 'Swagger Jagger' or Nero 'Promises' #1 that falls out of the top 40 within 5/6 weeks.

The British record companies have now realised they can manipulate the charts to their advantage by adding new singles to iTunes on a Sunday - checking the other releases to ensure they have the biggest chance of no. 1 thus making the UK charts frustratingly predictable. I'm sure everyone could correctly predict every UK #1 between now and December from just looking at the release schedule.

Yet when 'Poker Face' hit the no. 1 spot, there seemed to be genuine surprise as nobody expected the song to make it after it fell 03-04 the previous week.

It's weird seeing the pop bars for some countries like Slovakia, the pop bars between #4-100 are the exact same and a #1 is only 3-4 downloads ahead of the rest of the top 100 :P

What did you expect with such a high price in these new countries?

Moves Like Jagger didn't manage to debut at #1. It's VERY rare for that to happen because of the low airplay new songs have. Whenever it happens, it makes the news, and I think it's happened less than 20 times in the history of the chart. Although it happens more frequently now (two songs debuted at #1 this year).

Moves Like Jagger's chart run probably started off something like 7-25-65-. Seriously, it fell from #1 on iTunes to out of the top 50 in 2 weeks or something.

I agree about Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling aswell. They had massive success without being held back for weeks to pent up demand, so it can be possible, even in our country.

Remember you can get the chart runs of any song in almost any country at acharts.us :P

Its US chart run to date:

[8-23-62-61-41-25-8-3-4-1-2-1-1-1]

Thanks. :D Yeah, I remember that site now.

I was actually pretty close! :o

But yes, if that was the UK, it would have gone 8-23-62-OUT and everybody here would be going "lol what a non-#8", "Christina's career is now officialy OVER :cheer:" and so on, and it'd be getting dropped from every radio stations playlists one at a time.

That's similar to how the chart run of Notorious started off I think, and look what people were saying about that.

Christina's career is already over.

No it's not. Her next album is going to be huge. Get over it.

I doubt it. We'll see what happens when it comes but her having a very small featured role on a hit single isn't going to save her career.

I agree with Eric. Her role on MLJ isn't that small anyway, really. It's only a middle 8 but it's one of the parts of the song that stands out IMO. Plus even if Bionic flopped she's still a big star with a solid fanbase. MLJ proves that not everything she touches flops and I think radio will be willing to get behind her next time if she moves in a proper pop direction. Her career really isn't in THAT bad shape. Big stars get past flops all the time.

It 'stands out' because it's the only part of the song that's not tainted by Adam Levine's horrendous vocals.

I don't see her next era being any bigger than Bionic regardless of how big a hit Moves Like Jagger has been, but maybe that's just me. Feel free to quote me on this if she does become big again.

MLJ is big because of the whistle and chorus, not Christinas part lol.

I forgot Moves Like Jagger even had whistling in!

But come on everybody, let's be rational here, Christina's next album is clearly going to slay. B-)

It must be so embarrassing for all the other female electropop artists. On the Floor, Born This Way, S&M, Till the World Ends and E.T. all seem like massive FLOPS compared to Moves Like Jagger. Oh dear.
