Posted September 30, 201113 yr Just ahead of this weeks chart, let's celebrate 44 years ago. Why? Because Radio One started exactly 44 years ago today. Alan Freeman hosted the extended Pick Of The Pops on Radio 1 & 2 on Sundays at 5pm. It kicked off, with the new entries in the Top 30 bottom 10, then featured new releases, up until 5.55pm, when you then got to hear the complete Top 20 & it all finished up with a competition for some Record vouchers. You had to guess what record would be at a certain position, on the following week i.e. Alan would say "What will be #7 next week?" Then you had until Tuesday lunchtime to get your answer in, on a postcard. One of the benefits of no Mobiles or Internet...no damn irritating texts or emails! Here's Radio One's first top 30: (The chart being based on an average of positions from Melody Maker, NME, & Record Retailer, with one point given for a #1, 2 points for a #2 & so on...the lowest amount getting the #1 spot) 30 28 THERE GOES MY EVERYTHING - ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK 29 NE THE LETTER - THE MINDBENDERS (This record opened the show) 28 20 PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY - MONKEES 27 21 YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON - VANILLA FUDGE 26 17 HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT - ALAN PRICE SET 25 NE FROM THE UNDERWORLD - THE HERD 24 NE WHEN WILL THE GOOD APPLES FALL - THE SEEKERS 23 24 FIVE LITTLE FINGERS - FRANKIE MCBRIDE 22 29 ODE TO BILLY JOE - BOBBIE GENTRY 21 18 BURNING OF THE MIDNIGHT LAMP - JIMI HENDRIX 20 23 GOOD TIMES - ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS 19 16 I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER - STEVIE WONDER 18 13 WE LOVE YOU - ROLLING STONES 17 11 HEROES & VILLAINS - BEACH BOYS 16 19 BLACK VELVET BAND - DUBLINERS 15 26 MASSACHUSETTS - BEE GEES 14 12 JUST LOVING YOU - ANITA HARRIS 13 22 THE LETTER - THE BOX TOPS 12 09 EVEN THE BAD TIMES ARE GOOD - THE TREMOLOES 11 14 THE DAY I MET MARIE - CLIFF RICHARD 10 07 SAN FRANCISCO - SCOTT MCKENSIE 09 15 THERE MUST BE A WAY - FRANKIE VAUGHAN 08 04 I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN - TOM JONES 07 10 HOLE IN MY SHOE - TRAFFIC 06 05 LET'S GO TO SAN FRANCISCO - THE FLOWERPOT MEN 05 03 ITCHYCOO PARK - THE SMALL FACES 04 06 REFLECTIONS - DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES 03 08 FLOWERS IN THE RAIN - THE MOVE 02 02 EXCERPT FROM A TEENAGE OPERA - KEITH WEST 01 01 THE LAST WALTZ - ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK The 4th of 6 weeks at the top for Arnold Dorsey as Englebert, who turned the chart into a sandwich as he featured at 30 & 1. Easy to work out, why The Move were the first record on Radio One...Well, The Last Waltz was hardly the hip sound of the day & Keith West's offering was a bit kiddish, so that's why they plumped for "Flowers In The Rain", of course Tony Blackburn opening up the first day at 7am on Saturday 30th September 1967. Bang up to date. September 30, 201113 yr Shame that Ed Sheeran didn't manage another week in the T10 - it'd be his 13th week in the T10 and make give him the title of 'longest running single in the T10 of 2011' - in front of LMFAO and Pitbull; both of whom managed 12 weeks. A chart run of (03-05-06-03-03-03-04-04-07-06-09-13-18-16-07-11) isn't bad at all though for a #3 peaking single - and a debut single from a UK act no less. I just wonder whether Maroon 5 / Christina can not only outmatch the chart run, but also becoming longest-running single in the T10'.
