I watched the first show with Noel Gallagher, Julian Lennon and Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs. There were three live tracks played from two different bands I'd never heard of but both good. I thought Jo Whiley did quite a good job keeping things flowing. The discussion bounced around quite a lot, various topics so hopefully it'll be totally different to what Will is usually asked.

Good sounds as if they could discuss more tha reality tv. Meant to watch it. Perhaps just as well I didn't as I can't stand Ricky from the Kaiser Chiefs.

Ten years after winning the Pop Idol singing competition, Will Young is a testament to the fact that longevity is not out of reach for a reality TV star, especially one with talent. In this time, he has sold a staggering five million records, released five studio albums, and a number of top ten singles.

Will remains an avid fan of reality shows like the one that started his career, and confesses to watching them all the time. His fifth and latest album Echoes, takes a more electro/dance inspired theme, and is out now.

When questioned by Jo about his time on Pop Idol, his thoughts on X-Factor and about contestants being auto tuned, Will said:

“Well it [the auto-tuning debate]happened last year on X-Factor. I thought it was outrageous. I thought it was going to be the demise of Cowell. I thought Brilliant!  Finally, good, they have seen through what it’s reporting to be, a talent show. It’s no longer a talent show it’s a soap opera.

The thing I find saddening is that if you look back when I was on Pop Idol it looks like it was shot in the 1970s. It looks so old fashioned and I’m not just talking about the tank tops I used to wear. There was something nicely naive about it.”

When Jo asked him if Simon Cowell has two much power in the music industry he answers;

“Yeah I think he does. As a mainstream artist I remember doing an interview a while ago, and I really want to get on X-Factor because I wanted to sell some records. I’m a mainstream pop artist and I didn’t want to say things (in interview) that would damage that.

He does have too much power but I think it’s changing. He left American Idol and the viewers went up and X-Factor in America the viewing figures aren’t great.”

Jo also asked if he found himself doing things he instinctively thought weren’t right for him during his time in the contest.

“Yeah it was very hard because I had a love of music. I had to do a duet, The Long And Winding Road, and I was like ‘Are you joking?’ Cowell wanted me to do Elvis. I thought, ‘I’ve done the Doors, I’ve done the Beatles and now you want me to do Elvis what’s next? What else can I murderer?’

When asked by Jo if he would do it again and go on X-Factor this year, Will said:

“I wouldn’t get through at all. I couldn’t cope with it. There is a lot more asked of the contestants now. You have all the different things like Extra Factor you have to do. We only had a song a week and a little bit of chatting.”

Thanks Sunday.

We've always known there's no love lost. I agree with Will that Cowell's stranglehold on the industry is beginning to weaken.

He might be the product of a talent show himself but that nice Will Young has been laying into The X Factor again.

The 2002 Pop Idol winner, who recently suggested the X Factor is "too sensational" (as if), insists it's now all about the drama.

Speaking to Jo Whiley in a Sky Arts interview that airs tomorrow, Will said, "It's no longer a talent show, it's a soap opera."

He added, "The thing I find saddening is that if you look back to when I was on Pop Idol, it looks like it was shot in the 1970s.

"It looks so old-fashioned and I'm not just talking about the tank tops I used to wear. There was something nicely naive about it."

True enough. Back when Simon Cowell was the new Mr Nasty, the only real drama was Gareth Gates' stutter and Rik Waller dropping out.

But things have changed since then. This year, for instance, we've already had bullying, exploitation, teenage breakdowns and judges at war.

And last year there was the big auto-tuning scandal, news that outraged Mr Young.

"I thought it was going to be the demise of Cowell," he revealed. "I thought, 'Brilliant!'"

Bad luck Will... it'll take more than some nifty voice manipulation to keep Simon down.

Will Young is one of the few talent show stars to build a successful career following his win. More often than not, it's the losers that hit the big time...
