November 10, 201113 yr Author Thanks to Mary From Aberdeen Press & Journal. Hard-working Will is no pop idle Published: 10/11/2011 Will Young is delighted to be touring again IT WAS one of those moments – ask anyone and they can probably tell you where they were when Will Young beat bookie’s favourite Gareth Gates to win Pop Idol. It’s hard to believe that night was 10 years ago, never mind the fact that, since then, Will has released a greatest hits album and appeared in films alongside Judi Dench. Recently, he released his fifth album, Echoes, and he is appearing at Aberdeen’s Music Hall tonight as part of a UK tour. Will posted a picture of himself on Twitter recently, standing next to a photo of himself from that final a decade ago. Plenty of his reality peers have come and gone in the time that has passed since then, and Will credits hard work as the reason for his longevity. “It does feel like someone else when I look at those pictures; it’s funny,” he said. “Actually, the thing I feel most is real pride in what I’ve achieved, and what the team around me have achieved. “Simon Fuller has managed me from the beginning. He’s looked out for me and he’s always had my best interests at heart, whereas other people would have let me drown. Simon was the one who said: ‘You should try some songwriting’ and ‘you could be a great actor’. “I’ve been with the same team for 10 years, and I think we’ve done really well to survive. It’s a tricky game; we all know the casualties that come and go. “The key thing is the music. Alongside performing my new songs, it’s so nice to do my old ones and realise that they are really good pop songs. “It’s like when you look back on a photo of yourself and think: ‘Ooh, I was quite young and handsome back then.’” Of course, Pop Idol was a shiny new reality show when Will entered, pre-X Factor, and the exposure given to contestants nowadays is on another level. Despite the hype related with such shows nowadays, Will said he would probably still have entered The X Factor had Pop Idol not worked out. “I don’t think it would have mattered when I entered. I always knew what path I wanted to go down,” he said. “The exposure that Pop Idol got was crazy at the time because it was so new. It was so big; we were talked about in parliament; it was madness. “I think when it came to making the music I wanted, I would have always stood my ground, although not in an overconfident, arrogant way. I always wanted longevity. It’s about the people you align yourself with. “So many doors opened for me into acting and working with charities, and I want to make the most of any opportunities I get because I feel so lucky. “I won a talent competition. I was one of thousands of people and it would be a real crime to waste the potential of it.” Echoes is the album Will has been working towards for the last five years. He says it is the album he has always wanted to record and, had he not won Pop Idol, he would hopefully still have made it. “I’m so happy with it. The key was to do an album that felt honest, not trying to be something that I’m not,” he said. “Before Idol, I was working for a record company, and I was in a drama school. I don’t know if I would have managed to get a record deal without the show; I didn’t play any instruments; I only had my singing. I don’t think I fitted the mould for a pop star at that time. “I would have tried until I was 30, and then I would have had a crack at something else.” Thankfully, it did all work out, and Will has had a hugely successful career. Despite this success, you’re unlikely to see Will falling out of nightclubs drunk, or being snapped by the paparazzi in embarrassing situations. “I think I learned quite early on that I needed to stay grounded,” he said. “I was lucky that I went to university, and had some sort of life experience before I became famous. I think I realised that although I’ve made amazing new friends, I have friends that have known me for years, and those friends don’t let you get away with silly pop star things. “They are fundamental in keeping my feet on the ground, and hence my enjoyment of my job. I came from a talent show, so there’s always someone there to remind me that I was one dance move away from not reaching the second round.” It has been a few years since Will played in Aberdeen, but he’s looking forward to tonight’s show. “The Music Hall is just a beautiful venue,” he said. “I always have a great time in Scotland. I remember playing T in the Park, and they showed real faith in me by putting such a pop act on, but it was great. “It feels good to be back.” For more information on Will’s Music Hall gig tonight, visit www.boxoffice aberdeen.com
