Will Young

They don't make 'em like this any more: Leanne Ehren on a superb performance by the original talent show winner.

Will Young

Crowds of people lined the streets around the Cambridge Corn Exchange on Friday to welcome a very popular young man to town.

The UK's first Pop Idol Will Young had come to the city and boy, were the fans ready for him.

Crammed into the sell out gig were an array of (mainly) women - from 17 to 70 - and a few token men all ready to see the star in action.

British band Lawson warmed up the crowds with their slightly loud but energetic performance. Playing five songs the youngsters turned up the heat at the venue and got people's feet tapping to their upbeat tunes and cracking vocals - I really think these enthusiastic lads are one to watch out for next year. And it always help that they're easy on the eye!

Will Young's entrance sparked shouts and screams of welcome from the crowds. As his distinctive voice sounded down the mic I realised: they just don't make reality talent show contestants like this any more.

Every note that came out of his mouth was just perfect. You cannot fault this singer's vocal range and passion. Every number was performed with a dramatic edge to it, almost as though he was on theatre stage in a production, with his moves, facial expressions and tone conveying the lyrics of the song.

Mixing it up, Young performed favourites like Light My Fire, an acoustic version of Evergreen, Leave Right Now and Changes, but also engaged the audience with unreleased tracks from his newest album.

I could never fault this performer vocally although there were times when, although my ears were entertained, I found my eyes wandering. Some parts of his concert weren't as visually exciting as I would have liked and when so many of his songs are to a similar beat it would have been nice to have seen a bit more visual stimulation for the audience.

When he did have a natter with the audience - which was only twice - he was loveable, funny and showed himself to be the down-to-earth and likeable artist we all know him to be.

Finishing the show with big hit Jealousy, Young gave the audience a great performance before heading off to perform at Children In Need.

Without a doubt this talented artist is vocally at the top of his game. A sharp performer and cracking singer who I hope is around for a long time yet.

These reviews like Will's voice just keep getting better and better.

The great comments on Will's vocals are most welcome too, it's grand when they pick up on that, I can't remember that so much previous tours.

I'm really loving the reviews he's been getting this tour..things have changed so much with Echoes. :D he got it all so right that he must feel like he's walking on air at times.

Home again at last after a great trip if LONG trip to Cardiff and back! :cheer: :w00t:

Last time we were there was 2006 for the arena tour and we stayed in a hotel over the road, and the taxis we used must have taken us around the grimmest parts! Yesterday afternoon and evening saw a whole lot more and we were really really impressed. So much to see and do, could do with a long weekend few days there.

Like Gill and Di I'd like to ECHO how great it was to finally meet Bev, Phil, Shelly and Emms after however many years! Also I'd never been to a venue where so many fans are known to me already either, and it made such a difference.

As for the show, I was in raptures, best seats of the tour in the third row centre, I had a clear view of Will top to toe throughout, and it was all just sublime!!! And what a lovely theatre, the tiers looked good too. Sound quality perfect and goes without saying Will was.. :D

I'm sad it's all over but wow, some great memories.

So thank goodness for the Palladium in a fortnight!

Safe journey back tomorrow Gill!

Thanks Ros.

Hope Peter enjoyed it too.

Now time to recharge our batteries, then roll on December 12th.

Hi Di and Gill, yes we are pretty tired too but all worth it! I'm not surprised younger in your element Di, what a lovely place, home turf, and topped off by Will! :cheer:

Just watched the last of the tour diaries, what a great and lengthy episode! What a talented lot they are. :D

It was amazing to meet you all :cheer: and yes we certainly did have a laugh. It was an excellent evening and great to put faces to names.Hopefully we will all come and post a bit more often.Phil and Bev wont be home till tomorrow -dirty stop outs :D

Cardiff was a blast. i love that place. Will was, as usual, sublime and funny. BUT the riff-raff that get into these concerts is disgusting. One woman was heard to say she could do him some serious damage. Instead of admonishing her, friends were almost drooling and agreeing. Not surprising they'd had to rent a house for the occasion, no decent hotel could have accommodated that gang. I was shocked.

If you haven't already seen it do have a look at the Phantom clip on youtube. Hilarious. Glad there's the Palladium to look forward to because it would otherwise feel very flat.

Helloooooo :cheer: So Lovely to meet everyone!. Gill Di Ros!!! At last! :dancing: Hello to all the Devotee's who spoke to me too..hello girls one and all..missing talking to you all very much!.

:o How disgusting Dee..they let anyone in a Will concert these days! -_-

Will Young, St David's Hall

It’s been almost 10 years since Will Young entered the nation’s hearts by winning the TV talent show Pop Idol. Breaking away very quickly from the preconceived ideas of music moguls he very quickly established a successful and enduring music career outlasting all his fellow pop idol competitors.

These last few months he has been touring the UK with his band to promote the release of his new album Echoes. Will’s visit to St David’s Hall on Saturday evening was the last concert of the tour of which his performance truly went out with a bang.

Music acts Jodie Marie and Lawson kept the crowd entertained for 90 minutes while everyone patiently waited for Will. Lawson did a splendid rendition of Katy Perry’s Firework mixed in with their own particular brand of excellent music.

After a short break to reset the stage the band entered through a strategically positioned black door, with each member receiving a tremendous roar of approval from the audience. However, the biggest welcome was saved for Will Young himself. Will treat the audience to a review of his whole career so far including his startling version of Light My Fire, Evergreen, Leave Right Now and Come On from his latest album. My personal highlights included his version of Silent Valentine where thousands of red hearts appeared to fall from the heights onto Will and The Game, of which he provided a very energetic performance.

An excellent evening was had by all and judging by the enormous reception Will received from the Cardiff audience, a decade on, he is much more than a Pop Idol!
