Thanks Sunday.

I found the five reasons one already recorded in my planner, it must have been on already. I've got a search for Will through the Virgin Media TiVo box so where he's named it records it!

@IscaGill @will_young31 hello! We interviewed him today and will getting a piece up next month - we will keep you posted!

5:26 PM - 12 Jun 2015

I'm guessing this will be in connection with the next single. He'll be on Jo Whiley's show in July too.

Thanks to Julie (will4me)

You might have noticed in our ‘New Songs To Radio’ post on Facebook on Thursday that Will Young’s name was mentioned. ‘Love Revolution’, the lead single from the former UK ‘Pop Idol’ star’s recently-released album ‘85% Proof’ was serviced to media this week, marking the first time that a Will Young song has made it to Aussie media since (from memory) the ‘Friday’s Child’ project.

Our chat with @will_young31 includes his brand new video 'Thank You', filmed in a sauna: http://bit.ly/1JSF3zR

Will Young: "I’ve completely

rebuilt and rewired myself"

http://ic.s.tsatic-cdn.net/532/635_340/3e948_532302.jpg

Will Young was the world's first winner of Idol. That was in Britain back in 2002. Two weeks later he released a single, Anything is Possible, and it became the fastest-selling debut single of all time in the UK. He was 23.

That was also the year he came out.

Since then, he’s released bundles of Top 10 singles (four No.1s), sold eight million albums, amassed awards and great reviews, branched into writing (including journalism), theatre (the MC in ‘Cabaret’) and screen (including ‘Skins’ and ‘Mrs Henderson Presents’ with Judi Dench). Google reckons he’s worth AUD$27m. He’s now 36.

Will’s new album is called 85% Proof. Same Same chatted to him on the line from his home in London.

Same Same: 85% Proof? So, what’s in the other 15 per cent?

Will Young: Well, if it was a school report, it’d be “room for improvement”. Cos you gotta have somewhere to go, don’t you? 100% Proof would be a bit arrogant.

85 percent proof is still quite a stiff drink.

Yeah. And I think the album is 85-per-cent proof. I’m really proud of it.

You wrote the lyrics before the music, which was a switch for you. Clearly, the words are most important this time round.

Totally. I refound my love of writing when I had fun writing a sort of autobiography, a bit of a mash-up of my life. I found more of my voice as a kind of storyteller and an observer. I went on to do a lot of journalistic work, like Huffington Post. A bit of social commentary, stuff on gay rights, mental health. Writing the lyrics first here was an interesting, and much easier, way to approach a record.

The track ‘Brave Man’ is full of pain. Where did you learn to be brave?

Interesting what people take from a song ‘cos it wasn’t filled with pain writing it. In the lines See these scars of these years gone by / They don’t hurt me, just remind me I can cry there’s a sense of being proud of the physical signs of battle. I learnt to be brave from my parents, both individual people, both anarchic, they don’t tolerate bullies.

The lyrics reference a fierce battle, lots of enemies; your life sounds like it’s been one big long battle. Even the album cover has a picture of you in the boxing ring.

Interesting. In many ways it has, actually. I’ve now come to a place where it’s no longer a battle.

I’ve done a lot of work on myself and I’ve overcome those things. So many things are foisted upon us. The thing is often we don’t realise it and we just carry this weight. No one chooses to be unhappy or insecure. We get it foisted upon us. It’s about disseminating and disassembling. To be honest I’ve completely rebuilt and rewired myself and this album is about that rewiring. You know, I’ve never really realised that before!

The song ‘Thank You’ has a list of horror situations and it seems like you’re fighting like mad with the odds stacked against you:

“Shut in a cupboard, can’t even breathe in the air

Banging my fists, to see if anyone’s there

Oh my God, you broke my heart; tore me apart. Thank you.”

Why on earth are you saying thank-you – indeed, 21 times?!

There are several things mixed in here; it’s an acceptance, and it’s actually thanking someone for creating a difficult situation because it brought out my character. I went to a horrendous boarding school from the age of seven to 13 and got really badly bullied and that’s where it comes from. Funnily enough, that opening lyric came from a friend of mine, a wonderful actress. She got shut in a cupboard by a teacher! That’s where the inspiration for the song came from and then it led me to my own time at school.

The thank-you is a way of taking a situation and saying I’m not bitter about it. It’s a really empowering song. I’m taking someone’s anger and turning it into thanks. Also, there’s a lot of sadness in the song. That song moves me the most. And then it’s got the f***-you at the end which is, you know, brilliant.

You came out 13 years ago to beat the press to it.

I was always openly gay but, on a public level, I knew after winning there would be interest in my sexuality and I heard The Sunday Mail – a horrible, horrible paper, it really is the worst – was gonna splash it so I went with The Sun in the end.

Did it have an impact that perhaps surprised you?

Yes, the most pleasant thing was that people said you helped me come out. It’s an honour to have that. I never expected that. It’s a wonderful thing.

We all need role models

Yeah! And there weren’t so many when I did it. It’s changed now and it’s completely going in the right direction. You know, I was the first pop star to come out at the beginning of his career. It was a no-brainer. To be honest, you know what hard work it is to come out the first time! I was like I’m buggered if I’m going back in the closet!

All those pop stars who’ve come out late in their careers have been put into an invidious position after misrepresenting themselves for many years.

Yeah, and I didn’t want to live a life in fear of being found out. I didn’t want to be in hiding. So I took the wind out of their sails. And I was fortunate. I’d lived a fair amount of life before Idol. The job never overtook who I was as a person. That comes from my family. I’ve always been taught to be myself, not try to be someone else. That really put me in good stead.

‘Idol’ is still going 13 years later and they’re still promising a career if you win. But nothing could be further from the truth. You might win a contest, but you don’t win a career. You have to build that and there’s no shortcut.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. And I’ve never had anyone describe it like that. When I won I remember clearly thinking right, now you’ve gotta build a career. It was that immediate. You gotta have the right management, steely determination.

Was your Idol win ever a negative?

There was definitely snobbery at the start. And I didn’t mind that; sure, I had to earn my place. Well, I’ve earned my place now and I’ve never denigrated where I came from. Ever.
