Sorry but I think it is, 'dear'. The fact that she sings repeatedly about a small number of themes doesn't mean she has a personality. Everything about the album seems to have been tailored to fit with her tragic American starlet image but if you listen to the lyrics she doesn't have anything original or even very interesting to say. The entire package is a masterclass in marketing but I couldn't tell you who 'Lana Del Rey' IS after listening to this record.

I largely agree with this, I feel she slips into these different persona fairly easily and although they do have a little common ground (namely a kind of aloof, imperious but flawed diva) it's not an entirely convincing picture. As a pure pop album it's near faultless though - besides the production that makes everything sound far too similar.

I think this is the point. This is an act, a persona, a whatever-you-will. This is after all a Lana Del Rey record and not a Lizzie Grant record so why should we know any more about her.

Basically the record is the whole of LDR's Universe and along with the videos, constitutes the whole of her existence.

Whatever her personality might be doesn't really matter that much.

I see. Well if it's an exercise in writing a bunch of lyrics from the perspective of somebody with an empty shell of a life and nothing to say I guess she did a great job!

She uses the same melodic structure in several places on the album. It gets old quickly.

I wouldn't say she has nothing to say any more so than many other vapid pop artists.

Does Kylie Minogue every have anything to say apart from "love is great/hurts" or "let's party because it's the weekend and the dancefloor is where it's at"?

Not especially, but then Kylie doesn't dress herself up as a serious artiste either. What you see is what you get.

She has claimed on Twitter that she is doing a song with Azealia Banks. Sounds... intresting. Loving them both at the moment, but together? I am not sure, but they might pull off something outstanding.

I thought she claimed she was done with music after this album though? Or it might just be for Azealia's upcoming album.

She said a while ago on Radio 1 that she was planning on releasing a mix tape towards the end of the year.

I think the whole idea is that 'LDR' DOES actually live an empty shell of a life, like a cross between a JT Leroy book character and a David Lynch big screen tragi-starlet. At times lollipop-sucking shallow, vapid and stoopid, at others, lyrically quite profound and gorgeous.

I really, really love this album, but I agree, if you're looking to find the 'person', the 'artist', then we're onto a loser because she's not there - this is a girl in character.

And I like that - it's like artists have done for years, creating a whole persona, a mask...... probably most successfully achieved by Bowie as Ziggy Stardust 126 years ago.

And let's not forget, Bowie killed Ziggy off onstage... so... hmm.. perhaps that live performance was Lizzie slaughtering 'Lana' for the world to see? ;)

She is only famous because of her father and his money. She isn't talent in my opinion. Just watch SNL and her performance of Blue Jeans. Yet people still comment on that slating Gaga and Perry. Gaga is phenomenal live and Katy Perry isn't the best, but she's better than Lana.

How exactly is her father famous? Yes she's probably been helped along a fair amount by his money but so are a lot of musicians. This is nothing unique. She has taking the leading role in writing all of her material too. The only thing that makes her rise to prominence unusual is her cosmetic and musical makeover.

GaGa and Perry are different moulds of popstar with plenty of live experience and a different kind of confidence/stage presence. We shall see where Lana goes over the next year or so...

You're right on the first score, love her or loathe her, GaGa cuts the mustard live.... but Katy Perry? Na.... she's atrocious live..... utterly tune-free and incapable of holding a note.... as she proved with (surely the worst ever) recent Live Lounge... and that 'Fireworks' abomination on XFactor.

Lana del Rey definitely had an off-day at SNL... but check through her other live performances... she's mainly pretty great. And she oozes more style, class and talent in a fart than Katy Perry's attempted in her whole sorry 'career'.

I agree, she's a hit and miss performer but she's had some really great performances. She was great singing Video Games on The Jools Holland Show. But yes, her performances on SNL were definitely interesting! I like Katy Perry too but the live lounge special wasn't great...

I never said her father was famous. I said her fame was helped by the wealth of her father. As I think Jark said, she got big because of the marketing strategy, not because she's so talented.

And I've only ever seen her perform badly live. I don't think she's great anyway so I haven't given her a fair chance but the performances I've seen have been nicht so gut.

It's a shame about Blue Jeans missing out on the top 40 this week. :( I think for an artist like Lana, all post-album singles need both radio and video airplay. I know Radio 1 have it playlisted, but does anywhere else? Lana and other artists like her never get fully supported my music channels which is a shame. They'd rather play the same track every hour whilst some artists fall under the radar.
Confirmed to be performing on the first live show of The Voice UK.

Her live lounge perf of Blue Jeans was actually v. good so MAYBE she'll actually pull this one off live
I can't wait to see her on before Grace Jones at Lovebox this year - what a line-up for the Sunday... incredible.
