Where there’s a Will: Gigs at Dalby Forest sold out

Published on Tuesday 26 June 2012 11:15

Organisers of two massive outdoor concerts at Dalby Forest have revealed both gigs are a sell-out due to major demand.

Thousands of music fans are set to rock to the sound of top-selling artists Will Young and Plan B at the open air gigs next week.

The Forestry Commission, which is hosting the concerts, says both performances have been oversubscribed, meaning a total of 10,000 revellers will be heading for the 8,600 acre beauty spot, near Pickering.

It means a massive boost for the local environment, as cash raised by the Forestry Commission Live Music tour helps care for woodlands in Yorkshire and the Tees Valley.

Organiser Tanya Rex said: “Despite the economic climate fans have flocked once again to this unique venue to see world class music. It will be a great weekend.”

The programme of live music was first launched back in 2001, but over the last decade or so it has become an increasingly important income stream for the Commission.

Since 2003 revenue generated by the forest has doubled from £7m to £14m - of that, the calendar of summer gigs generates in excess of £3m.

And with the likes of Massive Attack, McFly and Sugababes bringing new people into the forest, it has also been key in widening Dalby’s visitor base.

This year’s top acts are also set to take the venue by storm.

In the ten years since winning Pop Idol, Will Young has sold over nine million records and boasts a succession of hits including Jealousy, Leave Right Now, Light My Fire and Changes.

He said: “The forest gigs have a great reputation for their atmosphere so I’m really looking forward to performing my songs in such unique settings.”

The singer will perform in the spectacular natural auditorium next Friday, where he will be joined by Brit Award and Ivor Novello Awards nominee Nerina Pallot.

And on Saturday Plan B, also known as Ben Drew, will take his distinct urban sound to the stage.

The singer-songwriter, rapper, actor and film director came to prominence with the 2006 release of the critically acclaimed hip hop album, Who Needs Actions When You Got Words.

His next project, the soul-influenced The Defamation of Strickland Banks, takes the listener on a journey of a man who finds success hard to handle and then hits rock bottom. Released in 2010, the album went on to become the fifth biggest seller of the year and continued a chart presence through 2011. Featuring crafted hit singles like Stay Too Long, Prayin and The Recluse, awards have abounded for both artist and album, including a Brit Award for Best British Male and a trio of Ivor Novellos.

He said: “It’s going to be a real adventure taking the Plan B show into the woods. I’m really up for this and hope to see you there.”

Both artists will follow in the footsteps of top acts Paul Weller, Jarvis Cocker, The Beautiful South and Erasure, who have all played at the stunning venue.

The forest will be closed to the public both days from 4pm and arena gates will open at 6pm.

Bar and catering facilities will be provided, along with free car parking.

Visitors are advised to bring outdoor clothing and a torch.

Glass, cans, umbrellas, tables and tents are banned.

This is nice: http://www.cornburyfestival.com/

I love how they've done Will's name. How different to when Will appeared on the first one when they just had the one stage. Read a Tweet the other day that said Cornbury is a mud bath - oh dear.

I just hope they didn't have the problems we had yesterday and today.

I don't think I remember such a storm ever. It was black outside and the thunder and lightning were frightening, and the electricity went off at 3.45pm yesterday Thursday, and has just come on now 5.15pm Friday. Having no TV, no computer, and after getting the oil lamp to see by and old Gaz thing out to boil enough water for tea, at least I did manage to clear a lot of things up that I've just been looking at for weeks. Trouble was I've now got to spend some time this evening shredding them, as of course the shredder didn't work. How much we rely on electricity nowadays.

Thanks to Julie on Baby D for spotting this:

What goes on @will_young31's tour stays on tour. Watch the video exclusive to @4music http://t.co/631DsRjL

We catch up with Will on his Forestry Tour

Will Young is currently on a sold-out, scenic tour of the nation's forests. And it's not all sight-seeing - the singer has been lucky enough to perform in some of the country's most unique and atmospheric locations.

In this video, Will takes a moment to give us the dish on his Forestry Tour during rehearsals, and even though he's obviously enjoying the tour, we're a bit worried about his dodgy choice of clothes. Luckily as you can see at the end of the video, he scrubs up for the actual performance. Phew!

Related: Will Young: Pop Idol helped me deal with shyness

Will chats unapologetically about his royal-themed sweatshirt, his choice of footwear and daddy shorts. We're a little confused, however, by the backdrop of clothing on stage. Will the pop idol be making some speedy in-performance costume changes?

Watch below for Part 1 of Will Young's Forestry Tour behind-the-scenes, and check out 4music.com tomorrow for the second installment.

Brilliant night at Dalby Forest. Will seemed to go up a gear last night, feeding off the crowd. Pitch perfect as always and so funny.

Loved his banter with the guy who asked if he could be his boyfriend. That's two propositions he's had lately. :chuckling: He also interacted with the young security girl, who I think may have gone home a fan. Was also really funny sending himself up about how he plays tennis. Really enjoyed the support act again. Must download some of her tracks. Special mention must go to security and helpful Forestry staff for how well it was all organised.

Glad to see he was on top form again :yahoo:

I must admit i disliked the support act ( was it the same one as nottingham TT ?) i hope she is not doing Kew if it had been a seated concert i would just have got there later :P

Yes it was but I think she was only doing most of the Forestry gigs, so I think it will be someone different at Kew.

Will got a bit carried away last night disposing of his wardrobe.

Did he throw stuff into the crowd

Was that Nerina Pallot? She was at Thetford - I thought she was excellent.

Two towels and a Hawaiian shirt if my memory serves me right!

You must have had another birds eye view of proceedings TT.

I think Nerina Pallot is at Kew Sunday, I remember booking it originally wanting to see her before discovering she was doing most of the forestry gigs anyway.

Great night, and makes a change to be able to get home rather than stay overnight. The north east crowd loved him!

I felt like that with Jodie Marie last tour! I don't mind Nerina Pallot with it mostly being upbeat.

Never mind Sunday - visits to the loo and ear plugs perhaps??

When are you seeing him munchkin?

Few vids from Dalby. Bit shaky in parts I'm afraid.

Hearts on Fire

The young security girl is Amy, the person Will shook hands with. Not sure she was a fan but may have gone home one. She's trying to sing along here but a few more songs in & her ear plugs were discarded and she was right into it.

From where we were stood I couldn't tell who Amy was, assumed she was in the crowd. Sounds like he's gaining fans right e and centre these days. :D
