There's no evidence that it was a racist attack. Even so, it's deeply shocking particularly the number of people just standing around watching.
I agree there's no context to say it's racially motivated. The comments underneath the video are "interesting" though...

The kid is mixed, half Chinese and half Western. I hate China, a lot of things they do make us Chinese look bad. Wish there is a term "Hong Kongese"..

What I'm trying to get here is what is the reason for them to treat the kid like that? Why would anyone do this to a kid.....

So my initial reaction on watching this both as a human being and a father is disgust and the question where are the parents. Then I wonder what is the cause. Is it racially motivated, bullying or some kind of vigilante justice. None of which I believe are justified. Then halfway throught the sad realisation comes that I already know this kind of thing happens for whatever reason somewhere in the world every day. All over the world in fact. And then it only goes to back up my reasoning that the human race because of its inate intolerance, stupidity, fear and propensity for violence will never truly be able to live peacefully with one another on a global scale. This makes me sad. When you think of all the amazing advances in medicine and technology and how much of that brilliance is put to use as weapons of war and destruction you have to wonder if as a species there is any real hope for us.

The above words were spoken on succesful completion of the atomic bomb. They could just as easily reference humanity as a whole.

We in the West like to kid ourselves that we are better than China but we stand back like the crowd in this video as the Syrian government murders it's people, as Israel continues to oppress the Palestinians or Mugabe commints genocide. Occasionally we tut in disapproval. When we do intervene like in Lybia or or Iraq we do it only because it serves our own interests.

As a species we are inherently f***ed up. I'm sure if Martin Luther King was still having dreams he wouldn't be talking only of blacks and whites walking together hand in hand. The world needs men like him now more than ever.

Some are saying the kid stole and got caught hence why he had his hands stood on. There 100% is a reason. In China white people are hailed so this is really uncommon.

Poor kid

As a Chinese myself I'd hate to be shotted too :P

It's bad that I only became aware of this quote because of Linkin Park

I agree with what you say though, we claim that what makes our species so great is its "humanity" but that almost makes the behaviour that takes place every day even worse. We as a species are both inherently social and selfish. Not a great combination, given that we thrive in settlements where there's lots of us but we're mostly arseholes who will commit atrocities on other human beings to get our own way.

Doesn't matter where you learnt it. Just knowing it is enough. Too many people stop at the lyrics to the Go Compare adverts
