#012 Adele “Rolling In The Deep” (1,163)

Chart Run: 28-15-06-03-01-01-01-02-03-05-07-10-16-21-29-36-41-47 (18 weeks)

Adele really dominated in 2011. She may have had the best selling single of the year with "Someone Like You", but for me the soulful stomp of "Rolling In The Deep" with it's rousing but also heartbreaking chorus of "We could've had it all" is the finest single she's ever released. It should have been a UK #1 (it's huge sales would account for this statement) but Bruno 'god damn' Mars stood in the way with the terminally dull "Grenade". It went on to spend 3 weeks at the top, making it the joint-3rd longest run at #1 of the year.

#011 Foster The People “Pumped Up Kicks” (1,171)

Chart Run: 36-20-12-06-03-03-01-01-03-05-06-08-10-16-21-27-35-44-48 (19 weeks)

The hit single that never was, well here in the UK at least - still don't know why because it could and should've been a massive hit here; I mean it was a hit in the USA (well I guess they are American). I first heard "Pumped Up Kicks" in June 2010, but didn't get in to it until earlier this year when it was sent into Unknown Pleasures V - but slowly but surely it won me over and eventually jumped to #1 in July. The lyrics speak of a deranged person who decides to go on a killing spree of children, completely contradicting the happy sing-a-long nature of the song, and consequently why I thought it was bizarre that it peaked on the UK chart around the time Anders Behring Breivik went on his killing spree in Norway.

#010 The Drums “Money” (1,195)

Chart Run: 49-37-26-17-11-07-02-01-01-02-04-08-14-20-24-28-33-37-40-41-46 (21 weeks)

Having been a relatively big fan of some of their previous singles (but not of their self-titled debut) I was a little bit dubious about new material, however "Money" is so bloody addictive and so perfect for summer that slowly grew on me and inched up the chart to finally clinch the top spot in September almost 2 months after it first debuted. The "I want to buy you something, but I don't have a money" refrain sounds a little like the refrain from "This Charming Man". Yes, Jonathan Pierce's vocals are very falseto and Morrissey/Smiths like, I can see why some people wouldn't like it, but for me this was a brilliant pop single.

#009 The Horrors “Still Life” (1,214)

Chart Run: 34-17-12-08-06-03-01-02-02-05-08-13-13-20-24-29-29-36-39-44-50 (21 weeks)

I am a big fan of the 80s sound, give me a bit of Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, The Cure or indeed Simple Minds anyday - so it was a huge joy when I heard this, the new Horrors single which recalled pretty much all of those sounds, including new-wave in one piece. I thought it was going to be a small sized hit, but sadly it's not 1982 and it crashed and burned at #63. Still at least it charted! The album is quiet varied and experimental, but also just as good. Despite only getting 1 week at the top, it had great longevity - 13 weeks in the Top 20.

#008 The Joy Formidable “Whirring” (1,249)

Chart Run: 29-16-11-09-05-01-01-01-03-05-05-08-10-13-17-24-29-33-40-47 (20 weeks)

The Welsh band's signature (& best) tune finally got a proper release this year and a bit of a revamp on their debut album The Big Roar - I'm not a big fan of the extended 6 minute version, and much prefer the brilliant single edit (from 2009 EP A Balloon Called Moaning) which is powerful enough in itself. Predictably it did nothing in the UK, but to my great surprise it became a moderate hit in the US (reaching No7 rock chart), god bless America! "Whirring" managed 3 weeks at #1 in May.

#007 Bon Iver “Calgary” (1,280)

Chart Run: 45-25-11-05-03-02-01-03-04-07-09-09-12-15-19-26-32-37-40-44-47-49-50 (23 weeks)

This isn't the official video, but I prefer it. Justin Vernon's second album Bon Iver, Bon Iver is a stunning listen throughout -very much close to being a masterpiece, had it not had "Beth / Rest" tacked onto the end. Anyway, the lead single "Calgary" rapidly ascended the chart in June and despite a very competitive few weeks around it's peak, managed to sneak a week at #1 in July after Cults' 4 week reign with "Abducted" and Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks".

#006 Lana Del Rey “Video Games / Blue Jeans” (1,296*)

Chart Run: 34-20-09-05-02-03-02-03-04-02-01-03-05-08-13-20-26-32-37-34* (20 weeks)

There isn't much more than can be said about singer/songwriter Lizzy Grant, aka Lana Del Rey, the hype was inescapable through the summer and all of that hype wouldn't have even existed without this single - "Video Games" an absolutely stunning beautiful song about young love that I just couldn't stop listening to - it actually became the 2nd slowest climbing song to #1 ever when it finally reached the top in late October - 11 weeks after debuting!! "Blue Jeans" is just as wonderful, and with "Born To Die" already rapidly climbing my chart, 2012 is likely to be a great year for the 25 year-old singer.

#005 Bon Iver “Holocene” (1,345*)

Chart Run: 40-27-11-03-01-01-01-01-01-03-04-04-06-07-11-13-16-20-25* (19 weeks)

...and here is the song that stopped Lana Del Rey getting to #1 for ages - he was so far ahead of the competition for a few weeks in September/ October he probably 'could see for miles, miles, miles', as it transpired "Holocene" got the longest run at the top in 2011 with 5 weeks; the secret of it's success more than anything down to timing really as the song is the perfect soundtrack for Autumn IMO, the changing landscape, the falling leaves - it just seems to fit. If the year was longer I have no doubt this would have been EOY #1.

#004 Cults “Abducted” (1,360)

Chart Run: 33-20-13-07-03-01-01-01-01-02-05-08-08-11-16-25-30-34-40-45-48-48 (22 weeks)

My favourite Cults track by far, "You Know What I Mean" was great, "Go Oustide" really good, but "Abducted" is in another league of its own. It easily nabbed the #1 spot in early June and stayed there all month! Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion's vocal combination works really well here amongst the frantic beat and heartbroken lyrics of unrequited love.

#003 M83 “Midnight City” (1,363*)

Chart Run: 49-23-11-04-01-01-02-04-04-05-05-06-10-16-18-21-23-28-30-33-39-40-42* (23 weeks)

Sneaking into the Top 3 at the last minute. This seems to be the song that is near the top of everyone's favourite songs list for 2011, and mine is no exception. M83 have had big hits on my chart before, "Kim & Jessie" finished in my Top 20 of 2008, but they've never had anyting as big sounding or successful as "Midnight City" was. The opening is quite strange with the haunting vocal loop which actually continues more or less through the whole song, then there's the drum kick at 16 seconds, then the synths, and the saxaphone at the end, what's not to love? I cannot believe this didn't chart in the UK either!

#002 James Blake “The Wilhelm Scream” (1,388)

Chart Run: 40-27-14-08-04-02-01-01-01-01-02-02-04-07-11-16-23-28-35-40-46 (21 weeks)

This was my number 1 of 2011 for absolutely ages but was overtaken within the dying weeks of the year; 'The Wilhelm Scream' is actually a stock sound effect used in countless films, and was first used in 1951 for the film 'Distant Drums'. The title comes from the fact that the song is actually a reworking of Blake's fathers song "Where To Turn" referencing his father's influence/voice echoing through time. It's a bizarre track which gradually builds distortion and echoes before exploding out of recognition halfway through - you'd think this was difficult to recreate live but his live rendition of this is spellbinding. Wonderful!

#001 Bombay Bicycle Club “Shuffle” (1,486)

Chart Run: 36-16-08-05-02-01-01-01-02-03-03-06-06-07-09-11-17-22-26-30-32-35-43 (23 weeks)

Jack Steadman, bassist Ed Nash, guitarist Jamie MacColl and drummer Suren de Saram are Bombay Bicycle Club. They scored their first Top 10 on my chart in 2009 with "Magnet"; the following year they had two more with "Evening/Morning" out-peaking them all by peaking at No6. This year they blew everything before them out of the water and scored a huge #1 single with the summer tinged "Shuffle" in July/August. Not only did it dominate the summer chart - 13 weeks in the Top 10 alone - it endured through until December (just) making it the joint longest runner of the year and the biggest single on my chart in 2011. A fine achievement then for 4 lads from London who only started out as the Canals in 2005 at the age of just 15 and struggled to get a record deal despite winning Virgin Mobile’s “Road To V” battle-of-the-bands contest in 2006. They persevered though and this year gave us "Shuffle", the stunning highlight of 3rd studio album A Different Kind Of Fix and sound of a band really coming into their own. What I really love about this song is they've got a simple piano loop from an old jazz record, and built the song around that, joining what sounds like an off-key riff into something that compliments the vocals and rhythm of the song, it's so vibrant, alive and addictive. What is "Shuffle" about anyway, clearly not about shuffling songs on an iPod, apparently it's about fear or commitment, or finding out what you really want too late ("Why won't you believe in it

'till it's gone?). The video is also brilliant, just showing the band on tour having fun, living.. I can't think of any song that better sums up my 2011.

Happy New Year, I hope 2012 is a great year for you, and is just as exciting for new music. :D

In love with the majority of the songs here and there are certainly none that I actively dislike! Pretty impressive I might say, makes me wish I'd bothered with a singles chart of my own!

I really like BBC, but for some reason, Shuffle fizzled out with me rather early. But it's a great song & nice to see it at #1 here.

I just can't get enough of Midnight City. It's still in my Top 20 after 26 wks. Although the song is becoming a mainstream hit now & I'm sure I'll be sick of it soon.

Bon Iver's album is great. Love all the singles, plus I think if there's one album that could upset Adele at the Grammys, it's this (just like Arcade Fire did).

Great Top 100 overall, you should be posting your weekly chart in the forum.
