Kicking off the countdown is Rihanna with the first of many entries. “S&M” originally hit #9 in my chart, followed by a quick downfall, before she unleashed the killer remix featuring Britney Spears. I (obviously) far preferred this to the original, so the song shot back up the chart to reach its #2 peak. “C’Mon (Catch ‘Em By Surprise)” was a song that I first heard a lot on the radio, hence my initial charting, but as time progressed, it began to grow and grow on me and it's now one of my highlights of the year. The Saturdays feature lowly, with their singular entry for the year - one which was not a vintage year for the girls. This was the first single off their third studio album, and it was quickly labelled a flop by fans. It took a while for the track to grow on me, but once it did, it didn't go! The beat is crazy and infectious, as Vanessa kindly tells us. Nicki Minaj was an artist who, in 2011, I grew to quickly love. I first listened to her album in December of 2010, and it came as a huge surprise to me that it was actually very decent! It spent four non-consecutive weeks at #1 in my albums chart, as well as spawning five top 10 singles - the second of which was “Girls Fall Like Dominoes”, based around the song “Dominos” by The Big Pink. It's not Nicki's best rap, but she does name drop many a female artist, combined with the song's feel-good mood makes it chart on my Top 50. JLS feature with the third single taken from their second album Outta This World. The boys added a (very good) rap from Tinie Tempah, which combined with the performance on Red Nose Day earlier this year, featuring the cast of my new favourite TV series Miranda, made me fall in love with it - twice!

Olly Murs was an artist that I was quick to write off with his début album. The first single taken from it became a UK #1, followed by another top 10 hit - neither had me convinced though. “Busy” was the forth song to be taken from the set, and missed the UK top 40 (and my personal top 40), but it's the song which made me really like his music, so with a comeback of sorts in the shape of “Heart Skips A Beat”, featuring new kids on the block, Rizzle Kicks, it really surprised me! The song didn't fare brilliantly in my chart, but it did give Olly another UK #1 single. We'll continue his story when his next entry pops up. The Black Eyed Peas have always provided song excellent songs, so in 2010 they decided to release... their worst album yet. However, hidden on that album (The Beginning, following on from 2009's The E.N.D. - weirdly) was “Just Can’t Get Enough”, a catchy hip-hop song featuring some of Fergie's best vocals. There's still a bit of their ‘cool dubstep’ sound featured in the song, but it doesn't take away much from such a class song.At #43 is the first single from Flo Rida's forth album, Only One Rida (Part 2), continuing on from his previous EP, Only One Flo (Part 1). The song samples Avicii's (mainly) instrumental track “Levels”, which itself samples “Something's Got a Hold on Me” by Etta James. It's a return to form for Flo, after his cheap-sounding 2010 #1 hit “Club Can't Handle Me”. The song itself became a top 10 hit for him in the UK, as well as in my personal chart, reaching #6, but so far spending five weeks in the top 10. Taio Cruz first released “Higher” as a solo track on his 2010 ‘hits’ collection The Rokstarr Collection. It was then remixed to feature Australian songstress Kylie Minogue for the European release, followed by a Travie McCoy makeover for the US release. He then decided that two remixes were not enough, and made a version to feature both Minogue and McCoy. I personally prefer the Kylie version, but both artists add their own speciality to the song. The song became a top 10 hit for me very earlier into 2011. Alexandra Stan first released music in her homeland of Romania in late 2009. She crossed over to the UK in May 2011 as “Mr. Saxobeat” became her first top 10 hit here. Unfortunately her record label failed to realise the potential and left it far too late to release single number two, with “Get Back (ASAP)” limping in at #56 in the week of the Christmas chart. Her album also wasn't up to scratch, with their being very few actual good songs on it.

Kicking off the next group is three ‘club bangers’ from early on in the year. “Good Girl” was the follow-up from the huge smash “Happiness”; it outpeaked it on this chart, as well as on my end of year chart, but it failed to meet the expectations set from it in the official charts, which began a long downward spiral for Alexis. “Blow” was the second single to be lifted off Ke$ha's 2010 Cannibal EP (tacked onto Animal in the UK in early 2011 to create Animal + Cannibal), but failed to set the chart's alight. It also didn't help that the song sounds remarkably similar to the track that she penned for Britney Spears earlier in the year, which we'll be hearing more about later. A remix of the song was featured in The Inbetweeners Movie, which gave it some new life for me. I've never really been a fan of Chris Brown, especially after the Rihanna incident in 2009, but after a very good album released at the back end of that year, he came out with another new set early this year, with this being lifted as the second single and by far the best track on it. It features Benny Benassi of 2004 hit “Satisfaction” on the production, and it's just as infectious as that song. Lady GaGa decided to claim her second studio album, Born This Way, as the album of the decade - before the public had heard a single song taken from it! Needless to say, she was spouting bullshit, but ever since the first listen, there was always a gem staring right back - although it was difficult not to see it, with it leading the tracklisting. The song was eventually released as the fifth single from the set, to a mediocre reception on the official charts - it shot her back into my personal chart top three though, after an absence of over a year. LMFAO unleashed their killer single and video combination for “Party Rock Anthem” in early 2011, and it began to gain momentum in April - I saw the video, but didn't think much of it originally, but for some reason it clicked with me and I was off! It's a great party track, but apart from that, the group don't offer much.

Drake was an artist that first interested me in late 2010, with his single “Find Your Love”, which I liked, but not enough to chart. I then heard his collaborations with Rihanna and Nicki Minaj - both of which hit my top 10, thanks to the cool R&B beats and nonsensical rapping. Both artists then returned the favour for his 2011 sophomore album, Take Care, the title track featuring Rihanna. This song is very much in the same vein as “What's My Name?”, hence my liking it so much, and Drake earning himself a placing on this list. 2010 was host to one of the best series of The X Factor - both entertainment-wise and talent-wise. So it seems strange that only two of the acts managed to make it onto my top fifty of this year. Rebecca Ferguson was an act that originally passed me by, with her vocals seeming perhaps a bit too mature for me, but after she performed “Make You Feel My Love”, I felt her love - and fell in love with her and her gorgeous voice. She released her début single in November of this year, with a beautiful performance on that very same show to return her to our minds. I received the parent album, Heaven, as a gift this Christmas, and it's one of the most gorgeous albums I've ever heard - so if ever I was more pleased that an artist was getting the success they deserve, this is her! At the other end of the X Factor spectrum is manufactured boyband One Direction. Clearly made as an act for Simon Cowell to rival JLS after he let them go, they released this infectious pop song in the summer, and it rightfully hit #1 in the UK charts. The video and follow-up single were cringeworthy to say the least, but with a song this strong to lead them with - it's hard to beat. There are some other rather strong tracks on their album though, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them score another #1 single from it. Example had a return of sorts this year, with his third album - which holds two UK #1 singles. Everyone will forget the second one, though, in favour of “Changed the Way You Kissed Me” - the first, which is a dance song with the sole aim of getting people on the dancefloor. The production is fantastic, and there are similar-sounding songs on the album, which is a massive step-up from the last. He just seems to not be very good at choosing the singles taken from this one. Foster the People released their début single in the UK in June 2011, with it taking two months to climb to its peak in the chart, and even longer for me to pay it any attention! It's a cool, indie song - perfect for the summer, and one of the deserved success stories of the year.

After many delays, and many ‘buzz’ singles, Kelly Rowland finally released her third studio album, Here I Am, in 2011. “Motivation” was the lead single, taken from it and released in the US in April, but with no release set for the UK at this point, it seemed she'd abandoned her once-biggest market. A cool, sexy, R&B jam; featuring a rap from Lil’ Wayne, it became her best-charting song in the US to-date, but it didn't even dent the UK top 100. The album then limped in (four months after its US release) at #43 in the UK, despite an (incredibly poor) performance on the biggest show going. The next two come from Hip-Hop producer Diplo, and I'm not going to deny that they sound incredibly similar. “Beat Of My Drum” was the lead single for Nicola Roberts, one fifth of girl group Girls Aloud, and it was very much anticipated by myself and others on this website - so it was a shock when I first heard it, and there was a thumping beat with Nicola's vocals contrasted against it. I have to say though, it worked, and it worked well. There was nothing else of this ilk that appeared on the album, with her instead opting for pop with a twist of indie production on the rest of Cinderella's Eyes, but it was a very nice listen. It's just a shame she didn't get the success she deserved with it, past the sole-week top 40 for each release. “Run The World (Girls)”, on the other hand, is taken from Major Lazer's début mainstream release “Pon De Floor”, with Beyoncé shouting about all things feminism. It, again, wasn't a huge success, but it did hit #1 on my chart after an outstanding performance at the Billboard Music Awards in May. Back to Olly Murs, and the second release from his second album - In Case You Didn't Know. It was a completely different approach from the lead single, but again, it managed to work incredibly well with his vocals and styling. It became his first top 10 hit, and infact #1, on my chart - and later the official chart. Another X Factor graduate, Leona Lewis planned to launch her grand return this year with club stomper “Collide”. After a court disagreement over plagiarism of the track's piano riff, it was eventually released with a mediocre reception, followed by the parent album, Glassheart, being pushed back into early next year. She gave us a sample of what's to come with a covers EP released in time for Christmas, with the title track, “Hurt”, a cover of Nine Inch Nails' classic becoming a second #1 on my chart in December (although it was ultimately too late to chart here).

Florence + The Machine came back in August with the ‘buzz’ single from new album Ceremonials. It didn't fare very well in either the official chart, or my chart, but lead single “Shake It Out” was an excellent return to form, featuring everything that I loved from the first album. Following a stellar performance on The X Factor, it reached a peak that it deserved in the official chart, and gave it some new life, for me, and it remains by far the highlight of the album. Kanye West released his much-anticipated fifth studio album in 2010, receiving many positive reviews, but they didn't translate into sales. Come February, a single called “All Of The Lights”, with an all-star cast, was climbing the UK charts. It became a top 20 hit, but had previously hit my personal top 10 in late 2010. Rihanna's chorus is incredibly catchy, as well as of course Kanye's rap. “Paradise” was lifted as the second single from Coldplay's fifth studio album, and immediately hit my personal top 10. Due to UK chart rules, it was ineligable to chart there until six weeks after its original release date, by which point, most people thought it was past it. Then came performances on Children in Need Rocks, The Graham Norton Show and The X Factor and it became the top 10 hit that it deserved to be, with it looking likely to become their second UK #1 this coming week! The song has spent 10 weeks in my top 10 so far, despite never going above #6. Rihanna released her fifth album, Loud, in late 2010, with me not being originally very impressed with the lead single or many of the tracks on the album, with “Cheers (Drink To That)” being one of my least favourites. Then for some reason, she decided to release a fifth single off it in the UK and it just clicked with me. On the week that it climbed to #2 on my chart, Rihanna claimed all three positions in the top three - all of them lifted from different albums (although one of them was a feature on a Nicki Minaj single). Just missing out on a place in the top 20 is the second single from Nicola Roberts' solo efforts. The song is a huge contrast to “Beat Of My Drum”, with Nicola dancing around an electropop beat in New York City during the music video. It's a very uplifting song, and was one of my favourite songs to listen to whilst on holiday this summer.

Kicking off the top 20 is Lady Gaga with her second and final entry, “The Edge Of Glory”, one of her most personal songs to-date - and the best thing she's recorded since “Poker Face”. It was originally intended as a promo single for the release of her upcoming album, Born This Way, but plans changed when the record label realised the demand for the song. So it was a shame they followed up this demand with her poorest video to date - a hard task to achieve, looking at videos such as “Judas”, “Born This Way” and “Alejandro”. Labrinth waited a year between the release of his last single and “Earthquake”, but the wait was definitely worth it! With Tinie Tempah on the middle eight returning to favour from last year's “Pass Out” and “Frisky”, the song became my favourite rap song of the year, spending two weeks at #2 behind Beyoncé and Katy Perry respectively - it suffered the same fate in the UK charts, but has long since outsold the track which stopped it. Nicole Scherzinger features at #18 with her only entry, the follow-up to her first solo #1 single, “Don't Hold Your Breath” (which would appear in a full-length top 100). “Right There” is another cool, R&B, summer jam; which many first thought it was a risky choice. They were, however, wrong, as it became a third consecutive UK top three from parent album Killer Love, but old Nic's career has since gone down the drain, after breaking a 12-year-old girl's dream on the American X Factor. Somehow, Katy Perry managed to get away with releasing a sixth single from her Teenage Dream album, which many suspect was to try and steal the record for most #1 singles taken from an album on the US Billboard charts. “The One That Got Away” hasn't yet achieved that feat, but it did become a sixth solo #1 for her on my chart; a nice, melancholic change from the upbeat pop songs that have previously been lifted from the set. Beyoncé appears with her second entry, and the current single to be lifted from the forth album, 4. It's (yet another) cool, midtempo pop/R&B jam, which she premièred at the MTV Video Music Awards in August of this year to announce her pregnancy. It's a nice contrast of the songs that surround it on the album: “End Of Time” and “Countdown” - the upbeat club-orientated tracks; and “Rather Die Young” and “Start Over” - the R&B power ballads.

At #15 is Katy Perry's second entry, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, which shot to #1 on my personal chart after the release of the viral music video for the track. Featuring cameos from Rebecca Black, Darren Criss, Kevin McHale and Hanson amongst others, the video features Katy's alter-ego Kathy Beth Terry remembering a house party from the night before. The song itself is also rather good, with it being one of my initial favourites from the parent album. Adele features with the first of three entries and “Set Fire To The Rain”, the outstanding power ballad lifted as album 21's third single. Despite never having an official video released, it's still sold close to 500,000 copies in the UK, just missing out on a top ten placing - but it did peak at #2 in my chart, becoming the forth highest song on my end-of-year chart to not hit #1. Maroon 5 released “Moves Like Jagger” in the summer, off the back of Adam Levine's appearance hosting The Voice in the US. He roped in co-mentor Christina Aguilera to sing the middle eight, and the song somehow managed to become a very good pop song - in fact, I'd rank it as one of their best. Featuring infectious whistling throughout, it's hard not to fall in love with this song, with it spending an unfortunate seven consecutive weeks at #2 in the official UK chart. And following it up is the song which stopped it for the final two weeks of its run. Rihanna unleashed her sixth studio album, Talk That Talk, in November, and despite there being a fair bit of, well, crap present, there's one song which stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. Rush-released in September due to overwhelming demand for the track, “We Found Love” became Rihanna's sixth chart-topping single in the UK, putting her in the history books. Featuring Calvin Harris on the production, it's an all-round amazing trance/pop song, despite the deep message coming through the music video. Jennifer Lopez launched one of the most surprising comebacks of the year in April, as “On The Floor” became a third UK #1 for her, and outselling all of her back catalogue of singles. On the outside, the song could be seen as song created just to get people to dance, with with a clever use of sample (“Lambada” by Kaoma) and Pitbull adding a ridiculous but charming rap, it's nothing short of amazing. This song just misses out on a place in my year-end top ten, despite never going above #4 in the chart and I originally wrote the song off as overrated! How wrong I was...

I'd hate to live in a world where #28 is a better song than #33.

I think C'mon is the only song so far that I really dislike so GOOD GOING so far Theo and keep it up. Major disappointment at The Wanted missing out though, I miss the time when you seemed to be a fan.

Shake It Out, Beat Of My Drum & Take Care should all be higher in my opion but great chart so far :D

10. Britney Spears - “Hold It Against Me” - 1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3-3-5-6-6-6-8-11-14-16-20-25-27-30-35-37-39-40-x

‘cause, you feel like paradise, and I need a vacation tonight

Kick-starting the top ten is the first entry for Ms. Britney Spears, who has had a fantastic year (musically). Unfortunately, this didn't translate into sales, but she did score herself a 21st UK top ten hit single with this, “Hold It Against Me”, the dubstep influenced Dr. Luke-produced electro pop banger. Featuring some filthy lyrics from Britney, this fast wormed its way into my ears, spending the best half of two months at the top of the charts in January and February of this year. There's nothing that similar to this on seventh album Femme Fatale, although Britney did make sure to give us a remix of second single “Till The World Ends”, complete with dubstep breakdown too. Keep reading to find out where that song places.

09. Rihanna ft. Drake - “What’s My Name?” - 12-9-10-2-3-4-2-3-1-2-3-4-5-8-12-18-21-24-29-36-40-38-x

the square root of 69 is eight some, right? ‘cause I’ve been tryna work it out

The predecessor to their duet on “Take Care”, Rihanna and Drake's collaboration from late 2010 makes it in to my 2011 list, after becoming the first new #1 of the year on my personal chart. “What’s My Name?” has an incredibly catchy hook, as well as a nonsensical rap fro Drake, which, like “On The Floor”'s, is quite charming. This was lifted as the second single from Loud, before seemingly every track was released as a single somewhere, and was a fifth #1 in the UK for Rihanna - giving her a sole #1 for the fifth consecutive year - although this was later broken, as “We Found Love” was released. Despite being a somewhat summer influenced track, it managed to work so well in the winter, although Rihanna's performed on the 2010 X Factor final won't have hurt it at all.

I would hate to live in a world where you can't appreciate 'Run the World (Girls)'. It's mainly so high because of the memories attached, but I genuinely do think it's a fantastic song.

It's a shame really. It just teaches them to not throw out any old shit! :D 'Glad You Came' would probably be featured in a top 100 countdown, but nothing released by them in 2011 matches 'All Time Low'

Thanks for reading ^_^

Thank you Cian! :D

TWO VERY GOOD choices there.

I agree! And eight more are coming right up! ^_^

08. Martin Solveig and Dragonette - “Hello” - 6-9-14-6-5-8-12-16-18-25-31-35-34-37-37-34-38-x

it’s alright, I’m getting dizzy, just enjoy the party

French DJ Martin Solveig released his breakthrough UK hit in 2011, six years after he last hit the top forty. He teamed up with Canadian pop duo Dragonette, and the result was “Hello”; my favourite dance track of the year. I first charted it in January, and it remained charting until May, with two stints in the top ten. It also became one of the highest-selling non-top ten hits of 2011 in the UK charts! His album was packed of similar-sounding tracks, some of them also featuring Dragonette, but nothing compared to this. I'm not sure why, but it must have something to do with how atmospheric the track is - I remember a DJ at the Katy Perry concert I went to in April played it and the arena went wild.

I would hate to live in a world where you can't appreciate 'Run the World (Girls)'. It's mainly so high because of the memories attached, but I genuinely do think it's a fantastic song.

Must admit that 'Run The World (Girls)' has grown lately but for me it'll always be her weakest single of this era (which I've come to think is very good). Nothing on '4' is as bad as Single Ladies/Diva/Ego/Video Phone.

I do understand about any old shit, it's nice when artists like them and JLS/Olly release an album every year, but sometimes more time is needed. I would rank 'Glad You Came' above 'All Time Low' though, mainly because I think the ATL chorus is more subtle, and Nathan's vocals on GYC.

That is good that you are finally bowing down to King B :) And 'Single Ladies' isn't even bad - the other three aren't particularly, but they're not any of my favourite Bey tracks.

The chorus of 'All Time Low' is more subtle? Well it's a bit hard when the chorus of 'Glad You Came' is a sexual innuendo! And Nathan's vocals on 'GYC' are shocking, especially when performing it live :puke:

07. Adele - “Rolling In The Deep” - 39-16-18-16-3-3-2-2-3-4-6-3-5-6-7-10-9-12-18-20-22-20-21-26-30-37-40-x

tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep

The second entry for Adele is the first single lifted from album 21, “Rolling In The Deep”. I first heard the track in November 2010, and, despite liking it, I wasn't completely sold on it. Then something happened which made the song click with me, and it shot to #3 in my personal chart, and later became the longest-running top ten hit to not reach #1 in my chart - despite that, it still beat two of the three songs that pipped it to #1 in my end-of-year chart (“Hold It Against Me” and “What's My Name?” - “Someone Like You”, the follow-up to this track, is still to come). It is possibly one of the most anthemic songs of the year, which is one of the things that is so charming about the song, not to mention it was so different for Adele, and the current music climate, to have a song of this musical structure present. Unfortunately it didn't become a first UK #1 for her, but it did become a Billboard Hot 100 #1, and the eventual year-end #1 stateside.

06. Beyoncé - “Countdown” - 1-1-1-1-3-4-6-8-10-7-12-14-15-

damn I think I love that boy, do anything for that boy

Appearing for the third time, with the third single from 4, it's Beyoncé. “Countdown” was an initial album highlight for me, but there was something missing for me when I heard it was announced as the next time - the video! Featuring King B with some crazy moves (and crazier outfits), paying homage to Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (whoever the hell she is), Beyoncé dances around the many screens with baby bump in-tow. The song is very different to previous single, “Best Thing I Never Had”, and in fact many of Beyoncé's past moments, which is why 4 is such a special record to her (and my personal favourite of her four albums). The song failed to take off both in the UK and Stateside, and was quickly replaced with “Love On Top” in the UK (which has currently faired slightly better.

05. Britney Spears - “Till The World Ends” - 11-2-2-3-1-2-3-1-1-1-2-2-3-6-9-12-15-16-18-20-23-30-35-34-40-x

baby, let me blow your mind tonight

Britney Spears will the second of her two singles taken from album Femme Fatale. “Till The World Ends” was released in March 2011, and as much as I enjoyed the track on first listen, it was painfully similar to another song which I liked at the time; Ke$ha's “Blow” (#39 on this chart). It was no surprise, as this song was written by Ke$ha, specifically for Britney. I eventually grew to love it, and it spent a solitary week at #1, before being quickly overturned. However, in April, Britney unleashed the remix (released due to the success of Britney's appearance on the ‘Rihmix’ of “S&M”. This version featured a truly bizarre rap from Nicki Minaj, and Ke$ha singing a couple of choruses with and without Britney. It reignited my love for the song, which had until then been quickly fading, and the song had one of the longest (non-consecutive) runs at the top of my chart last year. The two following singles from the album both reached my chart's top five, but ultimately pale in comparison to the lead singles, and failed to make it onto this list.

Still V GOOD, 'Femme Fatale' is GREAT but she's done a damn good job of choosing single & the remix version of 'Till The World Ends' really brought my life to it.

I'm completely fed up with 'Someone Like You' now (so I hope it isn't #1 and if it is, swap it with whatever is meant to be #2 pronto!) but 'Rolling In The Deep' remains listenable and 'Set Fire To The Rain' is my personal favourite from the era.

That is good that you are finally bowing down to King B :) And 'Single Ladies' isn't even bad - the other three aren't particularly, but they're not any of my favourite Bey tracks.

And you're finally recognising that Beyoncé is in fact a man?

I didn't mean it in a sexual innuendo, I meant with how big & catchy the chorus is. I must admit he isn't great live but I'm warming to them and I love his vocals in studio form. :(

04. Adele - “Someone Like You” - 16-1-1-1-1-1-2-4-7-9-10-12-16-19-20-26-30-34-37-39-40-x

but I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it

The success story of the year appears for the second time in the top ten, with one of the biggest worldwide hits of the year, but most importantly, the biggest hit in the UK of 2011. Selling one million copies within the UK, following few performances was a huge achievement for Ms. Adele Adkins, but nothing compared to the success of parent album 21, which is the current highest-selling album of the century. “Someone Like You” is a gorgeous piano ballad, featuring haunting vocals and pure emotion from Adele, which is what helped the track capture the whole country's attention, following the performance of this very song at the 2011 BRIT Awards. It scored five weeks atop my chart, along with the official UK chart.
