An employee of a German film company came to the house to try to persuade Elvis to sing just one song in an upcoming production. Elvis explained that he was hesitant to do anything that might lead to resentment on the part of his fellow soldiers. In passing, he expressed almost equal concern about fan resentment when he was unable to sign autographs.

This was David Briggs' last tour, who didn't know how much Elvis knew about his relationship with Linda, but he found out when Elvis pulled the plug on his electronic keyboard toward the end of the tour.

Elvis performed at the Fair Park Coliseum, Lubbock, Texas at 4.00 p.m. The advertisement said: "Elvis Presley, The Be-Bop Western Star of the Louisiana Hayride, returns to Lubbock." This was the first booking that Neal had obtained directly through the Colonel and the group was paid $350 for their performance. A young Buddy Holly was at the bottom of this bill as half of the country-and-western duo Buddy and Bob.

Elvis continued to be ill and his doctors recommended that he canceled both shows. He did do the dinner show, but followed the advice by canceling the midnight shows both on this night and the next.

Felton Jarvis supervised the taping, but his health problems had worsened and he required dialysis treatment several times a week. The intended life album never actually materializes, but the recordings would show up on various subsequent releases.

The Hilton released this announcement before the dinner show: "Ladies and Gentlemen, Elvis because of illness was unable to do his late show last night. He did, however , do the dinner show last night against doctor's advice. Again, tonight, he was asked by his doctors not to do a show, but he wants to do the best he can. He does not want to disappoint the people who came to see him. There will be no late show tonight. Thank You."

Elvis was discharged from the hospital, but in order to avoid crowds of fans this was done between midnight and 1.00 a.m. He returned to Graceland to recuperate. Dr.Nick had hoped to regulate Elvis' medication and diet and began a routine, in which either he or his nurse, would stop by Graceland every day to dispense the allotted prescriptions. Dr. Nick also encouraged Elvis to play racquetball with him as often as he could and he spent time in discussion with Elvis. Elvis got "laugh therapy" from his constant viewing of old Monty Python episodes, which he knew by heart now.

Elvis walked off stage during the dinner show. When he returned, he said, "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but I have a touch of the flu, and my voice suddenly disappeared." He finished the show, but again the midnight show was canceled.

Barely 2 weeks after their first meeting, Elvis brought Dixie home to meet his parents.

Elvis performed at the Odessa Senior High School Field House, Odessa, Texas at 7.30 and 9.30 p.m.

The show attracted more than 4,000 people, including local singer Roy Orbison. Roy later commented: "his energy was incredible, his instinct was just amazing". Soon it became obvious that any other act would have trouble following him.

Elvis performed at the Carolina Theater, Winston - Salem, North Carolina at 4.30, 7.00 and 9.00 p.m. The local newspaper reported: " He slouches, he scratches, he mugs, he bumps, he grinds….. The frenzy, the hysteria, the wild and wonderful shrieks of sheer joy, these were reserved for the remarkable young man with the long hair, the pearly teeth, the stylish slouch, the incredible conceit: Elvis Presley."

Elvis began 2 days of soundtrack recording at Radio Recorders, starting at 3.00 p.m. and working till midnight. The core of the Nashville studio band had been flown in and was joined by "Tiny" Timbrell and guitarist Tommy Tedesco.

Both on the dinner show and on the midnight show were several songs recorded which would serve as the backbone for the upcoming On Stage album. It was obvious that Polk Salad Annie, completed with karate moves, was the new showstopper.

There was an afternoon rehearsal, since there was not enough new material in the show to fill out an album. The 3 songs were The Wonder Of You, Release Me and See See Rider. Recording continued during both shows on this and the following night.

Four men jumped on stage toward the end of Elvis' performance at the midnight show in Las Vegas. Several members of the entourage rushed to defend Elvis. However it was Elvis himself who knocked one of the men back into the audience. When order was finally restored, Elvis told the audience: "I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen. I'm sorry I didn't break his goddamned neck is what I'm sorry about."

Elvis had returned to Colorado with the idea of buying a vacation home but returned to Memphis almost immediately after his Denver police friends attempted to talk to him about his increasingly erratic behavior.

By now it was clear to everyone that the 4 men who jumped on stage the day before were nothing more than over stimulated fans, Elvis became convinced that they had been sent by Priscilla's boyfriend, Mike Stone. Elvis raged to all the guys and made accusations that it was Stone who broke up his marriage and that he was now trying to take his daughter away from him as well. In his anger Elvis even thought of killing Stone, but when he finally calmed down several days later, the idea abandoned his.

Elvis was back in Los Angeles and with Lisa Marie when she had a tonsillectomy.

Elvis performed at the Florida Theater, Sarasota, Florida at 2.15, 4.30, 7.35 and 9.45 p.m. Here the newspaper called Elvis " the most talked-about new personality in the last 10 years of recorded music". It was also reported that between shows Elvis sat down and watched the western that was on the regular bill.

Elvis was visited by his parents on the set of Loving You, where he performed Loving You and Got A Lot O' Livin' To Do in front of an audience. They were sitting quite plainly on the aisle, with Gladys clapping to the beat. It was said that Elvis was never able to watch the film again after his mother's death.

Principal photography began on Spinout.

February 21, 1967

This was the day Elvis was supposed to report to United Artists in Hollywood for the start of production on Clambake. The Colonel realized it would be almost impossible to get Elvis away from his new ranch, so he had arranged for the cast insurance exam to take place at 5.30 p.m. at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, where soundtrack recording was now scheduled to take place. Elvis arrived in a rented Learjet and after discussing song selection for the film, recorded until 6.00 a.m. the next morning. It was obvious to all present that Elvis had little interest in the movie songs. Except for You Don't Know Me, on which he expended 21 takes. However Elvis was still not satisfied with the result and would re-record the song later.

Still at American, recording went on, but this time only from 7.30 until 10.30 p.m. and only 1 song and 1 instrumental track were completed.

Elvis went to the birthday party for Jan Shepard, who played his sister in the movie. He showed up with a stuffed tiger on his shoulders that he had named Danny Boy, after the song he had often sung on the set. He also gave Shepard a movie camera, with which home movies of the party were shot.

Elvis performed at the New Baseball Park Jacksonville, Florida. Here Elvis collapses in the parking lot after the first show and was taken to a hospital, where the doctor diagnosed exhaustion and told him to slow down.

Steve Sholes arranged a session at Radio Recorders for Elvis to cut Loving You again, this time as an RCA single, but Elvis turned his attention to other material instead. During a session from 10.00 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. I Beg Of You and One Night came out , with each a potential candidate for single release.

Elvis returned to the studio, wearing a complete cowboy outfit with chaps. He overdubbed vocals on the prerecorded instrumental tracks. Some were completed on this date, but several had to wait until his return to Hollywood.

Elvis returned to Los Angeles.

Elvis closed his engagement with a midnight show that ran until 3.00 a.m. giving what many considered to be one of his finest performances. He played the piano on Lawdy, Miss Clawdy and Blueberry Hill and toward the end of the evening he introduced the Colonel to the audience saying: "He's not only my manager, but I love him very much."

Elvis concluded his Las Vegas engagement with a show that ranged from an uninhibited Mystery Train/Tiger Man Medley to a sadly bittersweet Help Me Make It Through The Night. As on almost every other final night, there was also a water fight.

Priscilla flew in for the end of Elvis' engagement and informed his that she was involved with karate champion Mike Stone.

Elvis was awarded a 5 degree black belt from Ed Parker's International Kenpo Karate Association.

Ann-Margret was in the audience on Elvis' closing night. To Lamar, who was in charge of the lights, Elvis said: "Leave the light on her, man, I just want to look at her."

Elvis finally completed the version of Loving You that would appear on record. He also kept his promise to Sam Philips to record When It Rains It Really Pours, which he didn't completed at Sun. After the conclusion of this recording session Sholes had 7 finished masters from 2 days of work.

With filming once again completed, Elvis had returned to Memphis, where he hold a rehearsal with Scotty, DJ, the Nashville session players and the Jordanaires at Graceland for his Memphis charity show.

February 24, 1965

At the last minute there was a soundtrack session set up for Elvis' new film, Harum Scarum. Due to the hurried manner in which the session was scheduled, Elvis' regular accompanists were not available ant their places were taken by Charlie McCoy on guitar, Henry Strzelecki on bass and Kenny Buttrey on drums. They were joined by Rufus Long and Ralph Strobel on flute and oboe in order to lend A middle Eastern touch to the soundtrack.

This was Elvis' first visit to a recording studio in 8 months and his distraction and disaffection with the material was obvious. He broke off at 3.30 a.m. after only 4 hours in which he did 38 dreary takes of Shake That Tambourine.

After shopping for clothes in Beverly Hills, Elvis flew to Las Vegas.

February 24, 1971

Elvis and Priscilla remained in Las Vegas to attend Ann-Margret's opening at the International.

February 24, 1973

Elvis and Linda attended Ann-Margret's opening. Then they remained in Las Vegas along with Elvis' Memphis karate instructor, Kang Rhee, who conducted karate classes in the suite.

Elvis, Scotty and Bill drove to Cleveland with Bob Neal to play their first date outside the South. They made stops at various radio stations along the way, in hopes of getting subsequent airplay.

Elvis performed at the Louisiana Hayride, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport. Elvis sung for the first time on the Hayride Heartbreak Hotel. According to Scotty, the audience exploded like never before.

Tennessee governor Buford Ellington and Memphis mayor Henry Loeb both declared this day "Elvis Presley Day". At a special luncheon at the Hotel Claridge, Elvis was presented by RCA with a diamond studded watch to honor record sales of more than 75 million. Sam Philips asked why Sun Records got so little recognition for Elvis ' success, reminding everyone that "RCA wouldn't have him if it wasn't for Philips."

 

Elvis performed at the Memphis Charity Show, Ellis Auditorium, Memphis at 3.00 and 8.30 p.m.

Attendance at the first show was 3,860 and at the second 6,540. The comedian George Jessel introduced Elvis in the evening as "one of the greatest singer-actors of this century."

After the evening show Elvis hold a party at Graceland.

Elvis had a soundtrack recording session in Nashville from 10.15 p.m. to 3.30 a.m. for Harum Scarum.

Elvis flew back from Nashville to Memphis n the early evening. He had the plane circle over his ranch before landing.

Elvis flew to Los Angeles to his new home at 1174 Hillcrest Drive. This smaller, 4 bedroom house offered Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie more privacy than before. Only Charlie Hodge, Patsy and Gee Gee Gambill were living there too.

Elvis and the guys from the entourage flew to Houston for Elvis' engagement at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Kirk Kerkorian's private jet. Though the Colonel had tried to force the guys to travel on their own, they all went along with Elvis except for the wives this time. Elvis held a brief press conference at the airport before checking into the Astroworld Hotel for his first performance outside Las Vegas since 1961.

Elvis and Dixie went to attend the All Night Gospel Singing at Ellis Auditorium together.

Elvis performed at the Hillbilly Jamboree, Circle Theater, Cleveland, Ohio at 7.30 and 10.30 p.m.

After the show Elvis met with Bill Randle, a top WERE jock, which suggested to Bob Neal that Elvis was a "big artist on his way" and gave Neal the name of a contact for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, what would be a perfect way to become national exposed.

Elvis performed at the City Auditorium, Pensacola, Florida at 2.00, 5.00 and 8.00 p.m.

After all taxes and expenses were paid the tour's total net receipts came to $22,623.02. Elvis' share was little over $6,700.

There was a brief recording session at Radio Recorders at which Elvis overdubbed guitar-slapping and piano on Wear My Ring Around Your Neck.

Elvis called Anita Wood, as he prepared to resume his old life. Joe Esposito, who had already left for home, had agreed to work for him upon his return. So had Elisabeth Stefaniak, who would be returning to the States with Vernon and Grandma, and Elvis hoped that Rex Mansfield, too, would be part of the team.

Once again Elvis delayed his departure to Los Angeles. He complained about painful saddle sores. Dr. Nichopoulos came out to the ranch to examine him. There were some prescriptions and the doctor even agreed to call the Colonel to explain the problem. Dr. Nichopoulos and Elvis hit it off almost from the start and this was the beginning of a long-standing relationship, both personal and professional.

February 26, 1969

Elvis and the Colonel provided a photo opportunity to publicize his upcoming engagement at the International. On a roughed-in stage at the casino construction site Elvis signed his "contract", though the actual document would not be signed until April 15.

Elvis held a noon press conference at the Astroworld Hotel and talked about his musical roots, the current music scene and how his Sun records sounded "funny" to him now.

Elvis performed at the Annual Texas Livestock Show, Houston, Astrodome, Houston, Texas, at 2.00 and 7.45 p.m.

Elvis made a dramatic entrance in an open jeep, but he was discouraged both during and after the first show because of the poor acoustics and what he judged to be an indifferent response from a less than capacity crowd. " I guess I just can't bring it in like I used to", he said between shows.

But then his spirits were lifted at the evening show by the great response from a crowd of 36,299 and according to the Los Angeles Times his performance was "masterful".

Back in Memphis a driver run into Elvis in his Eldorado convertible in a downtown parking garage.

February 28, 1967

Due to the telephone the day before from Dr. Nichopoulos, the Colonel was furious the he had been unable even to get Elvis on the phone. He issued a warning to Marty Lacker, whose job it was to keep lines of communication open. "We have spent hundreds of dollars in at least 3 weeks on telephone calls and have accrued practically no information whatsoever and this must stop", he wrote, adding that things may soon "come to a head, where we will have some proper assignment, whether it be you or someone else where we have a definite immediate contact at all times."

Elvis performed at the Annual Texas Livestock Show, Houston, Astrodome, at 2.00 and 7.45 p.m. The evening crowd of 43,614 was a record for indoor rodeo performances in any area. Priscilla flew in to attend the nest day's show as rumors appeared in the Houston papers about a possible breakup of her marriage.

During the early part of March Elvis returned to Sun and recorded I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone, both as a slow blues and in the up-tempo country form in which it was written. The faster version incorporated drums, which were played by Memphis teenager Jimmie Lott, the first non-Blue Moon boy to play on an Elvis record.

Elvis went to the Memphis traffic court as a witness to the garage accident 2 days earlier. The woman who drove the other car was charged with reckless driving.

Elvis and his entourage stayed on the 10th floor of the Roosevelt Hotel, a block from the French Quarter. Red West came to join the gang. Although the Colonel had strongly advised the mayor not to, the mayor proclaimed "Elvis Presley Day" and security broke down when Elvis' fans came out to see the star.

Just before Elvis' departure from Germany, the army held a press conference at the men's club in Friedberg.

Also present was Marion Keisker from Sun Records, who has been serving out her tour of duty in Europe. When Elvis spotted he, he was excited: "I don't know whether to kiss you or salute." Marion answered: "In that order".

On the set of Fun In Acapulco Elvis complained about the clothes he had to wear while performing "Marguerita", explaining that he would never wear such an outfit in real life. However nothing could be changed because his double leaving the bandstand had already been filmed.

This was probably the day of the thoughtful interview James Kingsley had with Elvis. Elvis talked at length about how far he had come and what it all meant. "I know what it is to scratch and fight for what you want. I certainly haven't lost my respect for my fans; I withdraw not from my fans, but from myself."

There was a surveillance system installed at Graceland, with cameras placed at the gates and in several rooms of the house. These were hooked up to 4 monitors, which Elvis would come to see as a diversification of his television viewing at times.
