Elvis performed twice this day; first at the U,S, Armory, Newport, Arkansas, at 8.00 p.m. and after that at the Porky's Rooftop Club, Newport, Arkansas, at 10.00 p.m. These and all of Elvis' other performances during the month were booked by Bob Neal, who continued to push the Colonel for another Hank Snow tour.

Elvis was stopped for speeding on Riverside Drive in Memphis. Later between 5.00 and 6.00 p.m. he signed autographs at the Bob Neal Record Shop.

Elvis wrote a check for $500 toward the purchase of a house for himself and his parents at 1034 Audubon Drive, a well-to-do neighborhood east of downtown Memphis. Later he flew to Shreveport with his cousin Gene Smith, where he performed at the Louisiana Hayride, Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport.

Elvis traveled to Munich with Red and Lamar to visit Vera Tschechowa, a 18 year old actress whom Elvis met in January while doing publicity shots for the March of Dimes. In the evening they went to dinner with various friends of Vera and later to the Moulin Rouge, a striptease club.

Elvis stayed up all night on the way home to Memphis. The train arrived in Memphis at 7.45 a.m. in the middle of another snow storm. After greeting fans, Elvis rode out to Graceland. In the afternoon there was a press conference in Vernon's office in a small building just behind Graceland. Elvis told everybody how glad he was to be home again and Anita Wood joined him later in the evening.

Elvis begged Roustabout' director John Rich to let him do his own fight scenes. Of course there was an accident and Elvis required stitches to sew up the cut above his eye. However, there were no shooting days lost, because the motorcycle accident was already filmed and Elvis cut could well be the result of that.

RCA released Elvis´ first album "Elvis Presley". The LP entered Billboard´s Best-Selling Pop Albums chart at #11. Within 6 weeks, it reached nummber one, remaining at the top for 10 weeks.The total stay stay on the chart was 49 weeks. It was the first album in history to sell one million copies. Certification as a million-seller was made by RIAA on November 1,1966.

Elvis admitted that his mother was very upset about that, like all mothers. On this day in 1958, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the first gold record. It was Perry Como’s Catch a Falling Star on RCA Victor Records. The tune became the first to win million-seller certification, though other songs dating as far back as the 1920s may have sold a million records or more. Due to lack of a certification organization like the RIAA, they weren’t awarded the golden platter.

 

One of the next three gold records that were certified after Perry Como’s million seller was "Hard Headed Woman" by Elvis Presley.

The cast of Holiday on Ice visited Graceland during the day. In the evening the Memphian was rent to screen some movies.

Elvis performed at the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee at 2.30 and 8.30 p.m.

This was Elvis' first appearance in his hometown since 1961 and the 4 shows that were initially booked, were sold out immediately. So the Colonel added a fifth one, which were the perfect occasion for a live homecoming album and so the perfect way to avoid having to coax Elvis back into the studio. Elvis seemed both happy and mildly amused to be there and he declared: "Hello Memphis. It's good to be home".

This day was the first of a 3 day rehearsals period beginning each day at noon. Like always Elvis tried a lot of songs which were never performed on stage.

Elvis and his entourage, Scotty and DJ left for Nashville for a recording sessions. They were joined by all musician from the June 1958 session. They worked from 8.00 p.m. to 7.00 a.m. Elvis completed 6 sides for an urgently needed new single, which was pressed and shipped within 2 days, and toward his upcoming album.

Elvis arrived at the Paramount studio to begin his work on Blue Hawaii. After preproduction meetings, Elvis went to Radio Recorders to rehearse with the band.
