January 17, 201213 yr How many of these singles were actually released in 2011? The list just serves to show that the rock genre hasn't been producing much in the way of hits lately, even with the very loose classification. We need some decent rock music. I am not the biggest fan of the genre, but when it's done well it can be amazing! :D
January 17, 201213 yr LOL at the definition of rock. I want to see their list of best selling dance singles. This is sooo pointless. Impressive album sales for Foo Fighters though Edited January 17, 201213 yr by SKOB
January 17, 201213 yr 2011 releases which I could call 'rock' at a stretch: The Top 20 rock singles of 2011 01 COLDPLAY - PARADISE 410,000 04 COLDPLAY - EVERY TEARDROP IS A WATERFALL 247,000 05 NOAH & THE WHALE - L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. 242,000 07 FOSTER THE PEOPLE - PUMPED UP KICKS 225,000 09 FLORENCE & THE MACHINE - SHAKE IT OUT 127,000 12 NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS - AKA WHAT A LIFE 115,000 15 SNOW PATROL - CALLED OUT IN THE DARK 102,950 20 ARCTIC MONKEYS - DON'T SIT DOWN 'CAUSE I'VE MOVED YOUR 81,000 © 2012 The Official Charts Company The Top 20 rock albums of 2011 01 COLDPLAY - MYLO XYLOTO 908,000 02 NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS - NOEL GALLAGHER'S HIGH FLYING BIRDS 492,000 03 FLORENCE & THE MACHINE - CEREMONIALS 384,000 04 FOO FIGHTERS - WASTING LIGHT 380,000 06 ELBOW - BUILD A ROCKET BOYS 327,000 07 KASABIAN - VELOCIRAPTOR 279,000 08 SNOW PATROL - FALLEN EMPIRES 269,000 09 NOAH & THE WHALE - LAST NIGHT ON EARTH 261,000 10 ARCTIC MONKEYS - SUCK IT AND SEE 223,000 11 THE VACCINES - WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM THE VACCINES 214,000 13 RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - I'M WITH YOU 178,000 15 BEADY EYE - DIFFERENT GEAR STILL SPEEDING 165,900 18 FLEET FOXES - HELPLESSNESS BLUES 134,000 19 PJ HARVEY - LET ENGLAND SHAKE 121,000 That's depressing. Still, Gotye will hopefully blitz the majority of that list before too long and there's new albums this year by bands which have single-selling potential (Paramore and Biffy, mainly). Just need another Vaccines but bigger really.

January 17, 201213 yr Coldplay aren't indie in the slightest IMO, they're pop-rock. I don't think you can call them Rock in the purest sense. Its not like they are filling up Kerrang. They are NME and NME leans indie. It was the indie crowd picking up Trouble in 2000 and they have become a bit Indie-pop Edited January 17, 201213 yr by Paramore
January 17, 201213 yr 08 SNOW PATROL - CHASING CARS 128,000 --------------It just keeps going, why don't their good songs have this longevity? It's by far their biggest seller, so who really defines what is 'good'.
January 17, 201213 yr I don't see why Coldplay aren't rock? pop influenced rock yes, but still more 'rock' than anything else in the charts atm, although I agree that James Morrison or Birdy shouldn't really be in the list its quite sad that 9/20 of these are older hits, but then I think it also shows they're classic status, and a guitar based song selling over 400k isn't exactly commonplace nowadays
January 17, 201213 yr Indie can be rock and rock can be indie (like The Vaccines) but Coldplay is neither of those. They're a pop band. But like I said, we need the OCC's definition of DANCE singles. That'd be interesting.
January 17, 201213 yr Surely if Birdy is there, then Avril Lavigne should be there for What The Hell? That's more of a rock song than that!
January 17, 201213 yr Bands that play their own instruments = rock bands. That's how it has been since forever, don't understand why people aren't trying to dispute that. Coldplay may not sound rock to you but they're a rock band in the classic term cause they write and produce their own songs and play their own instruments. And Birdy is in the list simply cause "Skinny Love" is a cover of a rock song since Bon Iver is also a rock band. I don't know, it doesn't seem very complicated to me tbh.

McFly? Coldplay are a rock band in the broadest sense of the word in that they are centred around the electric guitar, bass guitar and drums. They make songs which are fawned over by mainstream radio and aren't particularly heavy or extreme, therefore they are a rock band who write pop songs. Indie doesn't come into it, they haven't been on an independent label since 1999 and their music is influenced by the alternative rock scene, not the indie scene. The word 'indie' on this forum is used as if it means a less heavy brand of rock music, which is completely wrong.
January 17, 201213 yr It's by far their biggest seller, so who really defines what is 'good'. people who have a wider knowledge of music than the average Chasing Cars fan.

It doesn't seem complicated to you because you are happy with your definition of rock. Others are not.
January 17, 201213 yr It's pretty similar to the list I posted the other week that was from MTV Rocks, which included 2 Ed Sheeran songs in the top 6, including You Don't Need Me... Although they did exclude James Morrison. I don't really see why people are so caught up on what is rock or not, all genres are ridiculously loose these days, it's painfully obvious that the majority of these songs are broadly speaking, reasonably similar and played/promoted in the same places. A better title would be 'Top 20 selling songs you'll probably hear on Absolute Radio"
