US rock band The Black Keys have racked up albums at an alarming rate, with last years 'El Camino' the 7th since their debut was released in 2001. The lead single was 'Lonely Boy' which became their first single to reach the UK chart since 2004, the album became their joint highest charting too as their fanbase continues to grow.

Lonely Boy is brilliant

 

They're the biggest rock band in the US right now. So deserved

As one of the biggest bands on the planet, album #5 for Coldplay was always going to bring with it high levels of anticipation, and unusually for a big act they released their first single months before the album was due, with 'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall' being released at the beginning of June in time for festival season, particularly their Glastonbury headline performance. It made the top 10 of the charts but wasn't perhaps as big as you'd expect a Coldplay single to be, it still ended up being very popular though.

Following their 2010 Mercury Prize win for their self-titled debut album, members of The xx did their own stuff this year, with Jamie first releasing his Gil Scott-Heron remix album and then a double A single, of which 'Far Nearer' was by far the most popular side.

After bursting onto the scene in 2008 with a trio of feel good singles but a largely disappointing album, singer Charlie Fink split up with girlfriend Laura Marling which was the inspiration for a much more personal and much better second album 'The First Days of Spring'. This year saw the release of their third album and the lead single 'L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.' saw them return to the sound they left behind 3 years ago, making feel good indie-pop perfect for the charts, it was one of the years success stories spending 3 months in the UK top 40.

Beginning 2011 with a tonne of hype, both on the internet through blogs/forums and in the wider music media with a Sound of top 3 finish and a Critics' Choice BRIT nomination, James Blake had a lot to live up to. To some he did just that and his debut album went down as one of the best of the year, but his sound was never going to lead him to become a roaring commercial success so he did about as well as he possibly could in that respect. 'The Wilhelm Scream' was certainly the standout track from his album.

13 - Coldplay 'Paradise' - 394 points (16 voters)

Released in October before the album came out 'Paradise' became Coldplay's 2nd number one single three months late off the back of high profile TV performances and the post-Christmas release lull. It was quite different from previous single 'Every Teardrop...' and was more typical Coldplay sound, a chorus fitting of stadiums and perfect for mainstream radio.

The top dozen remaining then, I shall hopefully post 12-6 tonight with the top 5 coming tomorrow. Any predictions?

So many top songs were nominated by Rich! :lol: None of mine yet :'( Unless Born To Die is Top 12. Don't see Call Me Tonight, California, Street Halo and especially Devotion anywhere near the Top 40 :drama:

I dont expect many of my faves to make the Top 12 - apart from, maybe, Born to Die - which I really dont think should have been allowed in seeing as we knew it was going to be a 2012 single from the day it went on youtube.

They weren't necessarily my favourites, I just came late to the nominating process and many of mine had already been nominated so I went with down the list of my favourites of the year and nominated what hadn't been already! And they were all commercial hits so were always going to have a chance of finishing higher, purely from being known by everyone voting.

Born To Die was an odd one, I did think about excluding it but everyone had been listening to it a month already and I doubt anyone hadn't heard it already, and it's not like anyone didn't vote for it because it's not officially released yet.

Everyone had been listening to it for a month and everyone who wanted to hear it, heard it. - I just dont think it is one of THE tracks of 2011 seeing as it is coming out in 2012.

So both of Flo's nominations fall together and just fail to reach the top 10, 'Shake It Out' got far more top end votes but less votes overall and as a result finishes 8 points behind. 'What The Water Gave Me' was the hype single which came first before 'Shake It Out' was given proper single treatment. Despite the extra promotion and attention it initially failed to live up to expectations chart wise, and didn't perform even as well as its predecessor (although I'd say given the quality of the two records, unsurprisingly) but an X-Factor performance changed all that. Although 'Ceremonials' doesn't look like getting the same levels of commercial success as 'Lungs' did it seems to have gone down fairly well with both critics and the public.

Well well well! Our first shock? I'd say so. Tipped by some to win, I myself couldn't see it being anything other than top 3 (although probably not victorious) but I guess 'Holocene' is a song that's not loved by a majority, but those that do think incredibly highly of it. It's finished almost 250 points off the top 3 but only the top 2 got more top 5 votes than this did. On an album adored by many, this is definitely the song that connected with most people, a truly stunning 5 and a half minutes that's both lyrically and musically brilliant.
