January 30, 201213 yr LOL after 1995 it was always january apart from 2007 when record companies didnt know how to work the new dload system!
January 31, 201213 yr Up until the mid-80's, instant #1's were regarded as something special - I wonder where the dividing line as to when they became routine, should be drawn? Edited January 31, 201213 yr by vidcapper

January 31, 201213 yr I'd say the middle of 1995, after Back For Good almost every other number 1 (Oasis, Livin' Joy, Robson & Jerome, Blur etc) all went straight to the top. '96 would be the first full calendar year though. By the time I really started listening to music in 1999, the words "straight to number 1" I just saw as being fairly normal, and not the major news it would have been just a few years earlier.
February 1, 201213 yr I believe it was when Livin Joy - Dreamer (1995) was released that a concerted effort was first made on the part of the record company to release a single to all outlets at the same time and to build promotion and exposure before the record's release resulting in an instant number. Before that it was rabid fan-bases, high-profile releases and charity records that provided instant number 1s - of course there were exceptions. From then on it became the normal practice in the promotion/release cycle.

I could have sworn that I read something about it when I was reading about how Oasis have never had a single last more than a week at the top. Of course "Don't Look Back In Anger" would have done so had Take That not come along and posted even bigger weekly sales the week after, and "D'You Know What I Mean?" could have done despite an alarming drop in sales had Diddy's sales not been so consistent.
February 1, 201213 yr I do feel slightly silly but maybe I should pin my Closest races to number one thread- it seems to be the answer to so many questions today! :o :D closest races to No 1 post 290 will give you the answer.
