Cian'S Monthly Review: January 2012

Here's just a breakdown of who has been dominating my iPod the most this month. The tracks that have been stuck in my head and the artists that have been captivating me.

The big winners this month are Friendly Fires, mainly due to the fact that I bought both albums in the Christmas sales and have listened to both of them regularly. Surprisingly the second album 'Pala' proved to be more to my taste that the eponymous first album. The grand score of 90 is slightly reduced due to an overlap with the tail end of December

This trend continues down the Top 10. Rizzle Kicks' 'Stereo Typical' and Lemar's 'The Hits' were both purchased in the sales aswell. Rizzle Kicks being th better of the two by notcing up 60 plays. Rebecca Ferguson's 'Heaven', 'Hits' by Pulp and 'in case You Didn't know' were all brought by the man in Red himself and were also on regular repeat. Rebecca emerging triumphant over the others with her stunning album. Again we see the plays are reasonably low for an album of this calibur because of the fact that it recieved about the same amount of plays in December.

The hype for Maverick Sabre is quite high at the moment and has only increased since I bought tickets to see him perform in Dublin. However on buying the album at the nd of January, expect a huge jump in plays next month.

Gotye managed to fight off tough competition from Flo Rida and Maverick Sabre to clinch the #1 spot this week. Eventhough I first heard 'Somebody That I Used To Know' in September the recent hype has helped me re-fall in love with it's simplicity!

Cian'S Monthly Review: February 2012

This month sees Maverick Sabre jump 8 places to the top of the chart, thanks to a combination of the the continupous loop of his debut album 'Lonely Are The Brave' and also the pre concert hype as I saw him in Dublin on the 29th where he had a brilliant performance and showed he truly deserved the number one position.

The Weeknd have a huge jump up 218 places to number 2, this month I downloaded his three mixtapes ('House Of Balloons', 'Thursday' and 'Echoes Of Silence'), which weren't as good as expected I love his song 'The Birds Part 1' and his feature in Drake's 'Crew Love' and was expecting the mixtapes to equal that standard, but the only tracks that did were his cover of Dirty Diana 'D.D.' , 'Montreal' and 'High For This'.

February saw 'Passenger' by Lisa Hannigan get its first plays and it notched up an impressive 48 plays putting Lisa 4th this month. Keeping on the Irish theme we see The Coronas re-enter at 5, thanks to the recent album 'Closer To You' and The Kanyu Tree make their debut off the back of the album 'People Street' at number 13.

In the art of reminising on the past I listened to the complete by singles by some artist from over the years I didn't get the chance to listen to, all of which happen to be male solo artist, Craig David, Enrique Iglesias and Daniel Bedingfield. This reminising results in re-entries from these three at 7,8 and 12 respectively.

Finally Shakira makes it back into the Top 10 mostly due to the fact that 'Je L'Aime Á Mourir', the #1 single this week, notched up a huge 25 plays this month.

Cian'S Monthly Review: March 2012

Welcome to the third installment of my monthly reviews of the year. This month sees an increase of 12% on total plays of the month. Partially down to the beautiful weather, which always increases my plays.

We see last months high flyer, Maverick Sabre, soar at a respectable #11 this month, missing the top 10 by one play. Hip-Hop duo, Jay-Z & Kanye West, shoot to #1 with the highest months plays since Florence + The Machine in November of '11. Initially I was cautious on purchasing 'Watch The Throne' due to the monstrosity that was H*A*M as a lead single. Luckily the combination of 'Otis' and 'Niggas in Paris' restored my faith and luckily it paid of since Watch The Throne is one of the best albums I have heard in ages. Unfortunately I won't be able to see the duo play Dublin in May due to a complete lack of funds.

Drake played the O2 Dublin on the 24th of March and I was one of the luckiy crowd who went to see the Club Paradise tour. The lead up and aftermath of the concert are the reasons why Drake has re-climbed up to #2. Newbie into my collection, Ben Howard enters at #3 this month thanks to the beautiful 'Every Kingdom' album which set a beautiful musical backdrop to the great weather this month.

'Sounds From Nowheresville' by The Ting Tings, the surprisingly good follow-up album to 'We Started Nothing', was on heavy rotation helped the Ting Tings land in the Top 5, just beating Snow Patrol to the #4 position. 'Fallen Empires' the latest album by the Northern Irish band was also played due to the fact that I will be seeing them in July with Florence & The Machine.

Finally 'At Your Inconveniance' by Professor Green has been playing due to the fact Professor Green, Friendly Fires, Marina & The Diamonds, Labrinth, Ryan Sheridan & Rizzle Kicks will be playing a gig in my university, so expect to see all these artist feature in the April review. Also in April review expect to see a jmp from Ms. Onika Maraj (Nicki Minaj) as her album 'Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded' managed to get some last minute plays in before the end of the month, and will be played quite a bit over the following weeks, watch this space.

Cian'S Monthly Review: April 2012

Welcome to the April edition of my Monthly Review which sees an increase in overall plays by 21%, thanks to the JOYS which are college exams. This is the greatest increase in plays since the 32% increase in November 2011.

Nicki Minaj and Jay-z & Kanye West swap places this month as they drop from #1 to #13 and she jumps 12 places. Nicki's surge is down to the fact 'Roman Reloaded'. Initially cautious, the album really turned out to be a great addition to my collection, resulting in a record breaking 147 plays (the highest since I started compiling in Jan '11. Nicki also sees 4 of her tracks enter into the Top 10 singles of the month which really helps reinstate that April was her month.

Maximo Park had always one of those bands where, what I knew by them, I liked, but I didn't know that much. Well due to the forth-coming release of their third studio album 'The National Health' I began listening to the first two studio albums 'A Certain Trigger' and 'Our Earthly Pleasures'. This is why we see them make an incredible debut at '2 with a whopping 105 plays.

Gotye, Labrinth, The Maccabees all fought for my album of the month with the albums 'Making Mirrors', 'Electronic Earth' and 'Given To The Wild'. All albums fell short of 'Roman Reloaded', but we see Gotye was in a respectable 2nd place with 79 plays, making him 3rd overall this month. Labrinth 20 plays short reached 5th and The Maccabees 6th.

Regina Spektor makes her debut into the Top 30 thanks to the release of 'All The Rowboats' which re-hyped her first album 'Begin To Hope'. Also riding on the back of a new single are Maroon 5 who's single 'Payphone' with rapper Wiz Khalifa enters at #3 in the singles and helps them jump 40 places into the Top 10.

Top 10 Regulars, Ed Sheeran and Chris Brown enjoy another week in the 10, which is completed by Ben Howard who drops 7 places. The Vaccines, who are currently at #2 in the singles chart with their brilliant new single 'Why Should I Love You?' enjoy a surge of 103 places to #12. Swedish songwriter Lykke Li who is one of the few artist to have a #1 monthly single without Topping the weekly charts, re-enters the artist chart at a new peak of 16.

The Black Keys are tipped for the Top 10 in May after charting at #20 this month, this months only new entry. In contrast the singles chart sees a clearout, with 10 brand new songs, filling all positions.

Total Plays this month: 1419 up 21.075%

Cian'S Monthly Review: May 2012

It's the first monthly review of the summer and the first notable piece of information is the significant 18.464% decrease in overall plays, ending the 3 month on month increase.

This month sees very few new entries and plenty of artists jumping up the chart. This month's number 1 sees Marina & The Diamonds climb 27 places on the back of the new album Electra Heart. After 7 months in the chart Marina finally sees the the view from the top.

Climbing 18 positions to #2 The Black Keys see the outcome of there album El Camino, after only being played for the first time last month, this is a very quick surge up the chart. Ben Howard jumps back up to #3 as Every Kingdom is still getting regular plays, especially boosted this month thanks to the recently downloaded deluxe edition tracks.

Marcus Collins' makes it back into the chart thanks to his debut album which was also played a lot this month. The big hitters were Higher & Higher, Tightrope and Innocence. Unfortunately I do believe that the album was a bit of a let down, and felt very rushed.

Florence & The Machine spends her 12 week climbing back into the Top 5, P!nk, R. Kelly, Vampire Weekend, James Vincent McMorrow and Daniel Bedingfield all experience the reminicing effect of the sun as the summery wather always make me want to listen to classic songs.

Last years Top 2, Nicki Minaj & Maximo Park, fell to #16 or #23 respectively, maintain their position in the Top 30. Unfortunately for Gotye, he plummeted out of the chart, but I believe he will be showing his face again soon.

Finally, Adele makes it back into the the Top 30 for the first time in under the year, the last time Adele was seen was in July 2011 she was positioned 6th.

Cian'S Monthly Review: June 2012

It's June, and probably due to my holiday in Europe, this month's total plays suffer a further 19% decrease.

For the third time in a row a female solo artist tops the chart. This time Paloma Faith maintains Nicki Minaj and Marina & The Diamonds' girl power reign at #1. Paloma Faith is only the 5th female artists to do so (Adele and KT Tunstall being the only other two). Female solo artist have 5 #1s, male solo artists 6 and groups/duos 7. (If Florence & The Machine count as a group). Despite the low total plays this month, Paloma Faith sees the highest % of total plays since March of 2011 when the Vaccines topped the chart with 11% of total plays.

B.o.B who has been lurking outside the Top 20 since 2010 finally penetrates the wall of the Top 20 and reaches #2 this month on the back of the album "Strange Clouds". "Out Of My Mind" from that album also made it into the Top 10 songs this month also.

After 10 months in the chart, Maroon 5 reach a new peak of 3, thanks to the realease of "Overexposed", the new pop album by Maroon 5. Maroon 5 have never failed to have an album #1 on the weekly charts and I do hope they tour with "Overexposed".

6 former #1s land back in the Top 10 this month Nicki Minaj, Marina & the Diamonds, Jay-Z & Kanye West, Kanye West & Maverick Sabre all climb back into the Top 10, a place where, between the 5 acts, have spend a total of 64 weeks.

This month sees the first entrance of Cheryl Cole, Loreen, Fun. & Pernilla Karlsson into the Top 30. Loreen & Pernilla Karlsson see their first week in the Top 300 in the Top 30 which is an achievement earned by very few acts. The Eurovision Song Concert is to be thanked for this achievement.

Fun. should be a climber next month with the album "Some Nights" set to be listened to.

Cian'S Monthly Review: July 2012

July is here and plays drop again to 828, the lowest since July last year when they reached an all time low of 650.

Chris Brown ends the girl dominance at #1 and breaks three records simultaneously. 1) The first act to be at #1 twice. 2) Highest % of total plays ever 3) Biggest margin @ #1 ever. This achievement is thanks to the release of "Fortune", Chris Brown's 5th studio album and in my opinon not his best. His new infushion of hip-hop and dance only works for a few tracks, but those work very well.

Keane achieve their highest peak ever thanks to "Strangeland" the first album by Keane I've listened to in whole, and may I add, I was pleasently surprised. Almost every track is a grower and is cleverly written. Maxïmo Park jump back into the Top 5, off the back of their 4th studio album "The National Health". It's no "A Certain Trigger" but it still maintains the charm of it.

Rounding up the Top 5 are Amy MacDonald who climbs again, this time to a new peak, thanks to "Life in A Beautiful Light", and also Florence + The Machine who are everywhere at the moment thanks to "Spectrum" topping charts all over the world. Another boost fo plays for Florence + The Machine was the fact that I saw them alongside Snow Patrol & The Tempar Trap at the start of July.

Fun. see their first month in the Top 10 off the back of the short, but sweet album "Some Nights". A very original mixture of sounds can be found. The Killers enjoy success this month thanks to "The Runaways" working it's way up airplay charts.

Top of the track chart for the month is Jason DeRulo's "Undefeated", an incredibly catchy song which is great to work out to. This also helps propel him to #10 this month. This month sees new entries by D'banj and Jessie Ware, two up and coming acts that show promise of piering the Top 10 one day. D'banj look more likely to achieve this status after their track "Scapegoat" reache #1 on the weekly chart.

Next month, expect entries from the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Frank Ocean.

Cian'S Monthly Review: August 2012

Autumn is here and The Vaccines become the second act to top the monthly review twice. The first being last month's number one, Chris Brown, who surprisingly knocked The Vaccines off their first #1 last March. It's interesting to point out that the first month that Chris Brown has not been in the Top 30 since the chart began is this month, a month after he was #1. He is currently at #55.

Along with top of the artist chart, The Vaccines have two entries in the tracks chart at #6 & #8. Topping the tracks chart is Jake Bugg with the brilliant "Lightening Bolt", despite tough competition from Ellie Goulding, Taylor Swift and Frank Ocean.

Frank Ocean sees himself debut at #2 this month with 71 plays, an amount which would have landed him #1 if this was the same time last year. His album channel ORANGE was the most played album of the month aswell. At #3, climbing an impressive 41 places is Trey Songz, whose climb is off the back of the release of the new album Chapter V.

Bruce Springsteen and Lykke Li also see Top 5 success as both their Greatest hits and Wounded Rhymes album respectively got regular play. Wiley's new single "Heatwave", along with his back catelogue see him jump in at #7. Marina & The Diamonds keeps her position at #8 beating the Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs who debuted at #9.

No Doubt are the only other artist to debut this month off the back of their single Settle Down.

Cian'S Monthly Review: September 2012

September is over and everyone is back at university. But it's time to look back at the month that saw me finish up at work and start back at university.

September had a plethora of brilliant new albums out but I wasn't able to cope with the constant on coming surge of new albums so The Killers & Mumford & Sons will be expected to chart in October. Albums on high rotation were "The Truth About Love" by P!nk, "Beacon" by Two Door Cinema Club, "Chapter V" by Trey Songz. The first of which landed P!nk her first #1, a play short from the 100 plays milestone.

My favorite tracks off the album also managed to chart in the Top 10 tracks of the month as well. Throughout the month, Two Door Cinema Club were the tough competitors for the title but lost to P!nk at the last minute. Their new album "Beacon" topped charts in Ireland and on my weekly plays as well. Unfortunately I didn't feel "Beacon" lived up to the splendid debut album "Tourist History". Trey Songz falls three places as Chapter V notched up plays at the beginning of September.

I bought "Looking For Myself" by Usher off the back of the release "Dive" which happens to be our #1 on the monthly track chart. This help see Usher into fourth place, held from the Top 3 by Shakira, who, thanks to the release of addicted to you and her pregnancy hype makes it back to #3.

I bought tickets to Maroon 5 who play the O2 in June, and preparation for that gig sees them notch up 52 plays this month, completing the Top 10.

Icelandic folk band Of Monsters and Men see their album "My Head Is An Animal" help them to #7 off last week plays alone. This success should continue into October.

Last week's #1 and #2 fall to #9 and #11 respectively which isn't too bad considering Chris Brown fell to #55 after his #1 in July. However he is back in the Top 30 at #12. His total weeks in the top 30 now up to 20/21. This is the joint highest out of all artists, joint with Kanye West who happens to be one place after him at #13.

Brazilian pop sensation, Gusttavo Lima is the only debut into the chart this month, however some artists see their first time into the Top 30 for quite some time, and in some instances, their first time. Britney Spears and Muse, Bastille and Shy'M see their first glimpse of the Top 30. Whereas Rebecca Ferguson and Royseven re-entry this month.

Finally, although plays drop by 15% this month, the plays of the Top 10 are the highest since April as we see almost 50% of all plays within the Top 10. This is the reason so many artists are up on % plays.

Cian'S Monthly Review: October 2012

October is always a busy month, with college back in full swing, my birthday and Halloween, the social calendar is always busy, but it's good to see that this didn't affect plays this month as there is a good increase of almost 28% on total plays.

This month 18 year old Englishman Jake Bugg grabs the top spot off P!nk who falls 15 places. With a total of 90 plays, it's the lowest score for a #1 track since May when Marina & the Diamonds reached #1 with the same score. Jake Bugg's self titled album was released this month along with a notable amount of other albums which helped aid some climbers up the chart.

The Killers climb to #6 off the back of their 4th studio album Battle Born. Ellie Goulding also climbs to #7 thanks to the disappointing Halcyon and also Mumford & Sons only reach #9 off the back of their new album Babel.

Frank Ocean climbs back up 9 places to #2, thanks to the fact I downloaded 'Nostalgia, Ultra', his original mixtape, which did not disappoint.

An old favourite of mine, the crooning legend Andy Williams sees a posthumous entry in the chart after I bought "A Happy Heart: The Best Of Andy Williams", which is jam packed with all his hits. He manages to keep Jessie Ware from the top 3 who's beautiful pop-soul album 'Devotion' helps her into the Top 5.

Marina & The Diamonds finish the Top 5 thanks to her concert I went to on my birthday where she was stunningly good. Silencing the crowd in the ballads and then havig everyone dancing within seconds of each other.

G.O.O.D. Music, Kanye West's record label, released their album Cruel Summer which I only caught onto this month. This helps see Kanye West and John Legend into the top 30.

Finally, it's worth pointing out that Bastille climb 9 positions to #11, just missing out on the top ten. Unlike the 10 artists ahead of it Bastille have managed to stay within the Top 20 for 2 weeks on fewer than 5 songs. I'm so excited for the debut album so watch this space.

Who to watch in November, Alt-J, Aiden Grimshaw, Muse, Tyler James and Calvin Harris.

Cian'S Monthly Review: November 2012

Last month I said that the ones to watch in November, Alt-J, Aiden Grimshaw, Muse, Tyler James and Calvin Harris. I never got around to listening to Tyler James, but I did the other four and that's evident from their existence in the Top 8. In a month where total plays are have increased for the third time in a row to the highest amount of the year, Alt-J steal the show with the highest plays in a monthe ever. With almost double their closest competitor, Rihanna, Alt-J do the double with "Tessellate" topping the trackss chart. The first time since Drake last December that an act has done the double. Alt-J's infectious "An Awesome Wave" was played at least 15 times each week for the last 5 weeks as my obsession for them didn't die. This is clear from the total of 6/10 positions they occupy in the Top 10.

Rihanna made a last minute sprint up the charts, with her seventh album being released in the last week of November and notching up 77 plays, knocking psychedelic rock group Django Django into third. X-factor reject, Aiden Grimshaw makes an entrance several months after his album "Misty Eye" was released. This was an impulse purchase on my behalf which was totally worth it. A great album, which would have landed him a higher position if it wasn't out shadowed by three better. I've beagn watching The Voice US, on which Christina Aguilera flogged her new album "Lotus" to within an inch of it's life, however it worked, as I bought it, and it managed to make it top 5 this month.

The 2nd law of thermodynamics was revisted by me this month thanks to Muse sho's album of the same name was listened to at the top of the month notching up 39 plays.

Frank Ocean spends his 4th month in the Top 10, barely clinging on at #10 this week.

A surprisng amount of new entries this month, Mercury prize winning the xx, The Voice of Ireland winning Pat Byrne, SBTRKT, BJSC competitors Imagine Dragons, To Kill A King, and Chvrches, and Canadian singer Grimes.

In December, look out for more current acts however as Ne-Yo, Example, Ke$ha, Olly Murs and Bruno Mars will most likely make appearences.
