Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

Flo Rida and Sia remain at No.1 on the ARIA Singles Chart this week for a third week on the track "Wild Ones". It's now Flo's 13th accumulated week at No.1 from his three chart-topping singles, “Low” (3 broken weeks) and “Right Round” (7 broken weeks), and now three for “Wild Ones”.

Last week we had some of the Triple J Hottest 100 songs of 2011 make some movement up the charts, which was from only one day’s sales during the countdown. Now that the charts have had a full week of sales, it helps some of the big winners on the count down to jump up the national charts. Leaping thirteen places to No.2 are The Black Keys and their track "Lonely Boy", and Matt Corby's "Into the Flame" (EP) featuring the track "Brother" which climbs five places to No.3, both songs matching the position they achieved on Triple J's rankings for 2011.

No.8 in the Triple J rankings was "Boys Like You" for 360 feat Gossling, which natioanlly leaps fifteen places to No.4, and another local hip hop act, The Hilltop Hoods jump up five places to No.6 with "I Love it", which becomes their highest charting single ever in Australia, and it also gives Sia two Top 10 hits this week, and the song was at No.11 on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 2011.

The song that jumped to No.2 last week, "Hey Hey Hey (Pop another Bottle)" for Laurent Wery falls back to No.5 this week due to the influx of Top 5 entries this week. Also falling is Timomatic with "Set it Off", down one place to No.7; "Paradise" for Coldplay is down three spots to No.8, David Guetta and Nicki Minaj vacate No.3 to land at No.9 this week with "Turn Me On", and after peaking at No.4 last week, "Summer Paradise" for Simple Plan drops down six places to No.10 this week.

NEW PEAKS& MOVERS: No.1 for Triple J's countdown this year was the biggest Australian track for 2011, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know", which thanks to its ranking rebounds back up the charts eight places to No.13 this week. The first new peaking track after the Top 10 comes from Pitbull and Chris Brown with "International Love", up three places to No.21.

"Video Games" for Lana Del Ray leaps up thirty-two places to No.23 with the No.6 ranked TJ100 song, whilst her other charting track "Born to Die" holds at No.48 this week. The Skrillex track "Bangarang" climbs four places to No.26, and up nine spots to No.28 are Qwote and Pitbull on the track "Throw Your Hands Up".

No.7 on the TJ100 went to Perth act San Cisco and their track "Awkward", which benefits from its high ranking by scoring a new peak of No.32 and up a massive thirty-nine places. Also landing in the Top 50 for the first time is GroupLove and their track "Tongue Tied", which is up eighteen places to No.33.

Nero were here in Australia as a part of the Big Day Out festival, and their former No.33 single "Promises" rebound back up the charts thirty-one places to No.36. M83 landed the TJ100 No.5 position with "Midnight City", and this week they are up forty-one places to No.37, whilst Foster the People scores their second Top 50 entry, as "Call it What You Want" is up nineteen places to No.39 this week.

Jumping fifteen places to No.42 is Rihanna with Jay-Z on the title track of her latest album "Talk That Talk", and scoring a new peak of No.46, and up twenty-seven places is the ARIA Award winning song "Feeding Line" for Boy & Bear, which ranked at No.4 on Triple J's 2011 listings. The No.9 song on that list was The Jezabels with "Endless Summer", which jumps back up thirty-nine places to No.49 this week.

Lower 50: The only new peaking track in the lower fifty is Nickelback's "Lullaby", which rises up thirty places to No.70 this week. Florence + the Machine jump back up twenty-four places to No.66 with "Shake it Out", and Skrillex is back up twenty-one places to No.72 with "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites", whilst his "More Monsters & Sprites" re-enters at No.83.

Other re-entries come from Seeker Lover Keeper and their track "Even Though I'm a Woman" (HP-80) at No.84, Architecture in Helsinki's "Contact High" (HP-70) at No.88. Emma Louise re-enters at No.90 with "Full Hearts and Empty Rooms", a new peak for that track, and 360 comes back into the charts with "Killer" at No.91. Foster the People's first chart entry from 2011, "Helena Beat" (HP-74) is back in at No.92, and The Wombat's re-enter with "Jump into the Fog" (HP-60) at No.97.

Scoring the highest new entry of the week is Drapht and the title track from his album "The Life of Riley" (TW-48) entitled "Sing it (The Life of Riley)". And another local act, Bluejuice enter at No.68 with "Act Yr Age".

Jay-Z and Kanye West score a third entry from their "Watch the Throne" album (TW-35), at No.71 this week entitled "Ni**as in Paris", and Ed Sheeran lands his second Top 100 entry at No.95 with "You Need Me, I Don't Need You".

Albums

The first new No.1 album for 2012 goes to... Foster the People and their slow climbing album "Torches" (37 weeks), which now has three songs within the Top 100 this week, two of those in the Top 50, and like the single “Pumped pp Kicks” (TW-14) became a No.1 here in Australia, their first national No.1 in the world, “Torches” also achieves it first No.1 in this country.

“Torches” is the 639th No.1 in Australia (1965 to 2012) and the 30th No.1 for the Columbia label. It’s the second album to feature the word ‘Torch’ in it’s title, as The Whitlams hit No.1 in July 2002 with “Torch the Moon” for a single week. Foster the People is the 132nd American Performers to hit No.1 in Australia, with the 233rd American performed album. They are also the 61st American group to hit the top of our charts, and the first US group since The Foo Fighters went to No.1 back in April of 2011 with ”Wasting Light”.

So Adele loses the No.1 spot after 27 accumulated weeks at the top, and she also loses all of her Top 50 singles entries, as they're all within the 51-60 section of the chart. If she doesn't return to the top again, she has at least achieved the ranking of seventh longest No.1 album in Australian Albums Chart history (1965 to 2012), and the third longest during the ARIA Charts period (1983 to 2012) behind Delta Goodrem’s “Innocent Eyes” (29 weeks from March 2003) and Dire Straits’ “Brothers in Arms” (34 weeks from May 1985).

Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2011 not only affects the singles chart this week, but also helps their parent albums to climb up the charts. The Black Keys score a new peak of No.3 with "El Camino", 360 entered the charts at No.4 last October with his album "Falling and Flying", and it's back up four places to that peak again this week. When Boy & Bear won several ARIA Awards last November, their "Moonfire" album leapt back up the charts to No.11 (from No.45). Now that they have several TJ100 rankings, it has helped the album back up to No.5 this week. Skrillex benefits from a physical release of his "Bangarang" set, as its up four places to a new peak of No.6, and re-entering the Top 10 at No.7 (and up eight places) is Gotye's "Making Mirrors".

The rest of the Top 10 comes from Coldplay at No.8 with "Mylo Xyloto", LMFAO are down five places to No.9 with "Sorry for Party Rocking", and returning to the Top 10 at No.10 is the compilation "Triple J's Like a Version Volume 7".

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Kimbra's album "Vows" climbs back up four places to No.12 and Michael Crawford cracks the Top 20 at No.20 with his collection "The Story of My Life - Ultimate Collection". GroupLove jump eight places to No.28 with "Never Trust a Happy Song" album, and back up five places to No.29 is Skrillex and his "Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites" set, one place lower than it's former No.28 peak (peaked July 2011).

With The Wombats in the country, their album "This Modern Glitch" is back up fifteen places to No.31, and their song “Jump into the Fog” re-enters at No.97. Big Day Out headliners Nero jump up twenty places to No.32 with their "Welcome Reality" set, and another BDO headliner, Kanye West is up nine places to No.35 with Jay-Z on "Watch the Throne", whilst his "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" album jumps up eighteen places to No.43.

After re-entering at No.77 last week, M83 leap up thirty-five places to No.42 with their "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" album (HP-37). The Jezabels are in both Top 50's this week, as their "Prisoner" album is up thirteen places to No.45, and also re-entering the Top 50 is Drapht and "The Life of Riley", up nine places to No.48.

Country star Tim McGraw lands the highest new entry of the week at No.14 with his eleventh studio album entitled "Emotional Traffic". It becomes his third Top 20 album, as his 2010 album "Southern Voice" peaked at No.12 and his "Greatest Hits Volume 1, 2 & 3" made it to No.19 when he toured here in October 2010. This is his 13th album overall to chart in Australia (4 Greatest Hits sets and 9 studio albums).

Another country act, this time a local in the former of John Williamson debuts one place lower at No.15 with his 32nd studio album "The Big Red". It's John's first studio album in almost four years, as he last studio album that charted was "Hillbilly Road" which hit No.6 in August 2008. He also celebrated his 40th anniversary of recording in 2010 with the compilation "Absolute Greatest: 40 Years True Blue" (HP-23, April 2010).

Metallica debut at No.19 with the four tracks EP "Beyond Magnetic", which consists of tracks left over from their recording sessions for the "Death Magnetic" album (HP-1, Sept 2008). And debuting at No.24 is "Storyteller - The Complete Anthology 1964 to 1990" for Rod Stewart. This four disc set was only ever released in the US in 1989, but has now been issued worldwide.

Swedish sibling duo First Aid Kit debut at No.36 with their second album entitled "The Lions Roar", with the album reaching No.1 in the home country upon release a couple of weeks ago (23-Jan), and it hit Top 10 in Norway, Top 40 in the UK and No.88 in Canada.

Lower 50: The self-titled album from local trio Seeker Lover Keeper jumps up twenty-three places to No.51 this week. Feist re-enters at No.65 with her former No.17 album from October of 2011 "Metals". Husband and wife duo O'Shea are back into the charts at No.69 with "Mr and Mrs", a new peak for the album, and right behind them at No.70 is Bluejuice and their November 2011 set "Company" (HP-23), helped by their new song "Act Yr Age" debuting this week.
