I agree that the Foos' GH would have sold more by now had it been led by a better single than "Wheels" but I still really like the song. Swap it and "Walk" over and Wasting Light would be just as strong while the Greatest Hits might have sold a bit more.

Turning down an opportunity to be in Amy Winehouse’s band to pursue a solo career Paloma’s first album proved that decision to be the right one. Despite both of the album’s biggest hits being in 2009, and indeed its peak position being in that year also, it continued to sell well enough to make our top 100 for this decade, achieved in part by her first tour in 2010 and part time acting career.

Launched in a blaze of publicity back in late 2009 Cole’s debut solo set was always destined for big things and duly entered at No 1 on sales of 125k having already clocked up sales of over 630k before the decade had begun, and as Jan 10 began could boast two top 10 hits on it already. After expressing her wish to learn streetdancing Cole was asked to provide vocals on Will.i.am’s “Heartbreaker” back in 2008 for its UK release, and his involvement is stamped on her debut album including the title track, the first member of Girls Aloud to release a solo album she remains the most successful, albums by Roberts and Coyle are yet to crack the 100k mark.

So here is where the story ends- well it ended back on 28th August 2009 when Noel announced he had left the band causing the creation of Beady Eye and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, one of which appear later! After an enviable 7 chart toppers from every studio album release the band were definitely the biggest group of the 90s to emerge from the Britpop era, and moreover were always guaranteed massive opening weeks. Whilst “Time Flies” only produced 101k in week one it did become their only non studio album to top the charts despite not besting the opening week of the previous best of compilation “Stop The Clocks” in 2006.

 

I always think that Paloma Faith's album sales are quite low considering the 88 weeks it spent in the Top 100, I'm always surprised to see it's sales below 500k. It's a great album, my mum owns it, and the singles released are just fantastic! I would find it nearly impossible to rank them!

 

I own Cheryl Cole's 3 Words, and that too is a great album, although I find Nicola Roberts' Cinderella's Eyes MUCH better. However, I'm glad to see 3 Words only 7,000 behind the million mark - it should reach one million by the time Girls Aloud reunite for the 10th anniversary.

We didn’t know it at the time, but this would prove to be the band’s final studio album, although 7 chart topping albums during the noughties speaks for itself as to their success. In all fairness the more recent albums had seen a downturn in sales so calling it a day was probably the right move, this album only made No 3, normally impressive but a let down by their admittedly high achieving past albums, and only 7 weeks in the top 75 was a result of only one track being plucked from it to promote the set although “Safe” became their lowest peaking official “single” ever.

You have to admire the tenacity of the girl, after being turned down for two series of “X Factor” and “Britain’s Got Talent” Ferguson remained determined to crack the music business and finally succeeded in series 7 of the former talent show when she was runner up to Matt Cardle. A debut album was a year in the making but easily outsold Cardle’s first offering in just 4 weeks performing very well in the Christmas market of 2011.

With a second album due this year, the band’s debut set has moved past the platinum mark now. Though released in 2009 the album bobbed about the lower reaches of the chart based on word of mouth and some airplay support until August 2010 when a shortlisting for the Mercury music prize saw it improve markedly . Upon winning the award the album soared to its peak position and the continued use of “intro” by the BBC to promote various programmes saw general sales hold well enough to easy make our top 100.

 

“Safe” became their lowest peaking official “single” ever.

 

Until being beaten by a full 22 places by 'Lighthouse' :P

Doo Wop has never really been a popular brand of music in the UK, certainly since the 50s, so its hats off to this group who by covering tracks and applying them to the genre have created something commercially viable. Although released in November 2010 it took until March 2011 to finally hit the top 10 thanks to the promotion they got whilst supporting Peter Andre on tour and an appearance on Dancing on Ice, the band were actually discovered by a talent scout whilst working as decorators in Oxford street and on their lunch break.

Returning Young to the No 1 position on the album charts for the first time in 8 years, “Echoes” never left the top 40 for the remainder of 2011. The album was launched with an ITV Special “A Night With....” and lead single “Jealousy” ,which became his first top 5 hit in over 5 years and was therefore seen as a general return to form by the former Pop Idol winner who has long since outlived runner up Gareth Gates.

I think TF...1994-2009 was the first time 'Whatever' became available to download, hence how it did so well. Don't quote me on that though.

I also suspect that the reason "Time Flies" hasn't done all that well is because STC was so successful (1 million +) and there aren't many new big hits by the band between 06-09
