February 10, 201213 yr Oops...well, just goes to show how quiet he is (and suitably non-English!) Are there any decent English managers bar Redknapp then? The only English managers in the Premier League are Redknapp, Hodgson and Pardew, plus the pretend Irishman McCarthy, there's Bruce and Warnock who have managed in it this season. As far as I know the only one with any kind of profile working abroad is Steve McClaren, in the Championship there's Allardyce, Mowbray, Holloway and Jewell who've managed in the Premier League at some point, and Pearce with the U21s.
February 10, 201213 yr Author Aside from Redknapp there is not one suitable current English manager. At the moment I think Hiddink will be the manager for the Euros, then Redknapp afterwards. I can't see him combining Spurs with England, too much hassle. Neither party will benefit.
February 13, 201213 yr I don't follow Under 21 football that closely admittedly, but one thing I notice is that one tournament the countries that qualify will be radically different from the previous, and a lot of big countries don't make it. I'm sorry but three qualifications including one semi-final and final is a great record for any country at that level. Also, nothing wrong with Pearce there, The FA seem hell bent on comparing everything to Spain, they took their best players regardless of experience, at least Martinez and Mata were in the world cup squad the year before but still went because there's no better international experience than playing in a tournament. Switzerland went to the final with players that had already established themselves in their first team, there wasn't really any good reason why we shouldn't have been either. Fair enough he has a good qualification record, but from watching his Under 21 teams for a few years I personally don't rate him as a manager Mentioning "players being taken away from him" was a recent issue. He named a squad consisting of Jones, Welbeck etc.. a few months back after the Under 21 tournament and then moaned when Capello called them up for a senior Euro 2012 qualifier a few days later. Surely the main aspect to his job is to develop players and help them make a step up to the senior squad ? I do agree though that the Spanish have a different mentality. Mata and Martinez were happy to play in a tournament and represent their country, whereas here it was seen as "Oh they've already moved up to the senior squad. Why go back down to the Under 21's?". Although, that only really applied to Wilshere who was the only England regular in the Under 21 squad at the time and it was mainly Wenger moaning that he'd played too many games during the season

The Under 21 squad is usually always announced before the senior squad and often a big name doesn't make it as they're being called up to the seniors, it could've been a dig at Capello as you'd think it was common courtesy to inform the U21 coach you're going to put a couple of regulars in the senior squad, so he can pick replacements to start with, and not later on?
