DJ Fresh feat Rita Ora - Hot Right Now enters at #1

UK drum & bass and dubstep producer Daniel Stein gets his second #1 as DJ Fresh proves that as far as popularity is concerned, he is indeed Hot Right Now. DJ Fresh was first a member of drum & bass trio Bad Company up until 2006, when he released his own debut album which did not chart. He achieved commercial success in 2009 when Gold Dust hit #24 and sold very well in the process, but flopped with follow up Lassitude. Last year saw him hit #1 with Louder, featuring vocals from Welsh singer Sian Evans from band Kosheen. Hot Right Now features vocals from Kosovo born UK based singer Rita Ora and crashes straight in at #1.

Emeli Sande - Next To Me enters at #2

Aberdeen born singer songwriter Emeli Sande gets herself a 3rd solo hit single this week as new rleease Next To Me enters at #2. Emeli first appeared in the UK singles chart in 2009 alongside Chipmunk on his #6 hit Diamond Rings. 2010 saw her collaborate with another rapper, Wiley on his #8 hit Never Be Your Woman. Emeli then debuted at #2 last year with huge hit Heaven but could only limp to #21 with the follow up Daddy, however last year also saw her feature on Professor Green's chart topping Read All About It. Next To Me comes in at #2 this week, also a solo version of Read All About It falls just short of the top 40 this week.

One Direction - One Thing climbs to #9

X Factor generated boy band One Direction get themselves a 3rd UK top 10 hit this week as their 3rd single climbs a massive 17 places to #9. This follows last year's chart topper What Makes You Beautiful and #3 follow up Gotta Be You into the top 10. All 3 tracks are lifted from their debut album Up All Night, which has sold almost 1/2 million copies since its release at the tail end of last year.

Nicki Minaj - Starship enters at #16

US rapper / singer Nicki Minaj has a new entry at #16 with her new single Starship, the lead single from her forthcoming second album. Nicki made her UK chart debut just 2 years ago, alongside Jay Sean on #9 hit 2012 (It Ain't The End) and then alongside Will.i.am on #11 hit Check It Out. It wasn't until last year that she got her first hit as lead artist, with #22 Moment 4 Life (alongside Drake) then #24 Girls Fall Like Dominoes. Superbass then followed along with Where Them Girls At (with David Guetta and Flo Rida), both of which turned out to be huge - peaking at #8 and #3 respectively. Then there was her #16 hit Fly featuring Rihanna, as well as Turn Me On (another with David Guetta) which is only reaching its peak now after video release, at #xx this week.

Whitney Houston re-enters top 40 with 3 songs and Adele with 1

Last Sunday saw the untimely death of Whitney Houston, following drug abuse and personal problems. As is often the case when high profile singers die, there is a flood of tribute buying of their back catalogue, with no exception here. The highest being at #14 I Will Always Love You, originally taken from The Bodyguard OST and topping the charts for 10 weeks in 1992/3. 1987 chart topper I Wanna Dance With Somebody is at #20, whilst her 1988 chart topper One Moment In Time is at #40 as used at the Olympics that year. Adele re-enters at #39 with last year's #2 mega-hit Rolling In The Deep, after her performance at the Grammy Awards.

Emeli Sande tops the album chart with Our Version Of Events

As predicted by most, Emeli Sande's debut album has entered stright in at #1 this week with rather good sales of over 100k. This knocks Lana Del Rey to #2 after a fortnight at the top. After climbing to #1 last week with his single, Gotye finds himself with a top 5 album as Making Mirrors debuts at #4. Whitney Houston could well have been #1 with her Ultimate Collection, but that is #1 in the "Budget Album Chart" due to dealer pricing. However Greatest Hits makes it back in at #7 despite stock / distribution issues, expected to rise next week as supply arrives at the shops. There are no other new entries in the top 40, however Adele's 19 and Rebecca Ferguson's Heaven also rise back into the top 10.

Personal Opinion

I think Hot Right Now is OK but nothing special, not worthy of a chart topper, like Louder last year. Emeli Sande's Next To Me however is brilliant in my opinion and really deserved #1, her album is really good as well. Whilst I am not a fan of 1D or of boy bands in general, I do quite like One Thing and am glad to see it actually make the top 10. I have no time for Nicki Minaj at all through and think that Starship is just as bad as all her other rubbish, I do like her singing on Turn Me On though but not her ©rap. Whitney Houston's passing was sad but not altogether unexpected, I admit to being a big fan of her music and my favourite 3 songs of hers have charted again.

Thanks for that, interesting that Whitney now has the most amount of simultaneous top 75 hits for a female artist. Whitney's music will live on forever.
