February 23, 201213 yr 01 - ABBA definitely had stronger songs than Waterloo, but I think one of the reasons I love Waterloo so much is that it's by far the strongest song they produced in that era. I mean, compared to songs like Sitting In The Palmtree and King Kong Song, Waterloo is an unquestionable masterpiece! It's hard to believe all three songs come from the same album  10 - I completely agree! It was the last time we sent something current to the contest. Blue came close, but even I Can was more similar to music that was popular here a few years beforehand. 27 - The rap did let it down somewhat, as did a couple of Lindsay's notes on the night, but at least the final note was spot on! It was a pretty decent performance on the whole from someone with so little experience though! 40 - I agree, excellent instrumentalisation! 1. Indeed, I've heard some of their earlier albums and they're not all that  Waterloo laid the foundations for the Swedish music that we all know and love, it's a fantastic pop song! 10. I'm not so sure about that, I Can was VERY reminiscent of Written In The Stars, which was only a few months older. Then again it would have fit ok in place of Curtain Falls back in 2004 as well  I'd say that Say It Again was contemporary back in 1999, certainly I thought it was any other chart song when I bought it at the time, it didn't sound out of place in any way. Everything between Precious and Blue though were real misfires in terms of having any relevance to the UK music industry. 27. It was unnecessary, it sounded very amateurish too whereas the rest of the song wasn't bad at all production wise! I was really impressed at her hitting that final note, especially with the pressure on her in that HUGE arena!

I hadn't heard Written In The Stars before but after listening on Youtube just now, I can see what you mean - it's almost identical apart from the rapping  . I think the problem with I Can was the chorus which made it sound a little more dated than it should have.

How have you missed hearing Written In The Stars before? :o It was a huge UK #1 and worldwide hit (it was even used as the music to Mattias' MF dance to the stage intro the other day). I don't think I've gone a day without hearing it in the past 18 months  I can see what you mean though, the chorus could have had a better fit to the verses. The production throughout the track however was fantastic, up there with the very best in Eurovision from the past few years.

I never listen to radio or the music channels anymore, so there are a fair few chart hits that pass me by, especially if they're by artists I have no interest in :heehee:

I think 80% of the times I've heard it would be out and about, pumping out of shops or in bars and clubs! I barely listen to the radio or music channels either

February 24, 201213 yr Author Oh GOD. 'Written in the Stars'. AWFUL. The girl I worked with a year ago had this song as her ringtone, so I was forced to listen to it constantly for a few months
February 26, 201213 yr Re-watching the 1999 contest. Doris, Precious, Charlotte, Selma, Marlayne! Can't wait till Dana International goes arse over tit with the award at the end! Really like the German entry 'Reise nach Jerusalem' as well.
February 27, 201213 yr I'm still weak for this entry from Portugal in 1981  Play Back ^_^ It came 18th our of 20 entries with 9 points  GhXf9ZO06U0 Underrated. Probably in my top 3 of 1981. May he RIP
May 9, 201213 yr Peter30 and I are currently simultaneously watching the 1989 contest (commonly cited as the worst Eurovision ever). Thus far the signs are that the CRITICS ARE RIGHT.

I actually quite like 1989, terrible winner though. If you want AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL, try 1991 (although it does border on so bad it's good). I do hope Italy 2013 will be better organised :kink:
May 9, 201213 yr I love Rock Me! Watching the whole thing through it does make sense why it won though - after Birthe Kjær it really is just utter ROT all the way through until Yugoslavia (maybe Finland aside).
May 10, 201213 yr Peter and I mustered 1982. Now THAT'S the worst year ever. Utter lift muzak hell - the orchestra was HIDEOUS that year. Brilliant top four, but I can't say I cared for much else on. Then 1993. What a year! *.*
