This came out of the blue uninvited but has anyone compiled or seen a list (top 5/10) of youngest and oldest credited artists who have topped the singles and album charts?

 

We all know the winners here, Little Jimmy Osmond (9) and Louis Armstrong (66) + Neil Reid (12) and Vera Lynn (92) but would be interesting to dig a bit deeper..

Everyhit.com has got a whole bunch of statistics about youngest/oldest to top charts etc. I do know off the top of my head a few stats about young chart toppers:

• B*Witched are the youngest girl group to get a UK number 1 (they all had an average age of 18 when 'C'est La Vie' debuted at number 1)
• Billie Piper is the youngest female solo artist to debut at number 1 (Helen Shapiro was 13 when she had hers back in the 60's though)
• McFly are the youngest band to top the UK album charts twice (with Room on the 3rd Floor and Wonderland)
• Gareth Gates is the youngest male solo artist to debut at number 1 (he was 17 when 'Unchained Melody' came out 10 years ago - he's now 27. I officially feel old!)
