Given the first one attracted lots of interest, not to mention raising one or two issues not addressed there, I thought an additional question woud be useful.

I voted 80's, as that was when TOTP was still strongly influential, and before record companies learned to frontload songs to get them (briefly) positions they frequently did not merit.

It hasn't changed really. There have always been forgotten number ones and also big, career-defining number ones (such as Cher's Believe, Adele's Someone Like You)

 

There are 52 weeks in a year, every number one single can't be prestigious and well-remembered.
