Chris Brown - Turn Up The Music enters at #1

So Chris Brown gets his first UK #1 hit single this week, as new release Turn Up The Music enters at the top this week. Chris achieved his first chart entry in 2006 with #2 hit Run It, followed by several smaller hits. Then in 2008 With You made #8 and Forever made #4, both of which had very good runs and clocked up decent sales. Several flops then followed until 2011 when he hit #6 with Yeah 3x and #4 with Beautiful People, both of which also had lengthy chart runs and very respectable sales. Now he claims his very first #1 and 9th top 10 hit (including collaborations), taken from forthcoming 5th album Fortune. Time will tell if it will make him another fortune!

Plan B - iLL Manners enters at #6

A man with not very good manners enters at #6! London rapper and singer Benjamin Paul Ballance-Drew makes his return to the upper reaches as iLL Manners debuts at #6 for Plan B. He first came on the scene in 2005 as a grime artist, his commercial breakthrough did not come until 2009 when he teamed up with production duo Chase & Status for End Credits which made #9. 2010 then saw the release of million selling album The Defamation Of Strickland Banks, on which he was more of a soul singer than rapper. That album spawned #9 hit Stay Too Long and biggest hit to date She Said which peaked at #3, followed by #16 hit Prayin' and some other minor hits. Whilst the Strickland Banks era showed off his soul vocals, he has now returned to his rap roots for protest song iLL Manners with a video showing footage of the London riots.

Olly Murs - Oh My Goodness enters at #28

X Factor runner up and Xtra Factor co-presenter Olly Murs gets another top 40 hit this week as new single Oh My Goodness joins his current long runner Dance With Me Tonight in the top 40. Olly's debut single Please Don't Let Me Go hit #1 in August 2010, followed by #4 smash Thinking Of Me and debut self titled album. A further 2 singles followed - Heart On My Sleeve and Busy, peaking at #20 and #45 respectively. Then came the huge selling chart topper Heart Skips A Beat last year, from his also huge selling 2nd album In Case You Didn't Know. The aforementioned Dance With Me Tonight went on to give him a 3rd chart topper, following an X Factor performance alongside The Muppets (no not Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh). Oh My Goodness is looking to get Olly his 6th top 20 hit next week, as its official release is then.

Vaccines - If You Wanna enters at #35

Now for a track which is just over a year old and only making the top 40 for the first time, due to its use in a TV advertisement. If You Wanna by indie band The Vaccines could only peak at #53 upon initial release last March, however debut album What Did You Expect From The Vaccines hit #4 ... well what did you expect? Post Break-Up Sex was their only other top 40 hit, making a rather modest #32 in January last year. The band have a second album due out later this year, this track making the top 40 bodes well for its success.

B.Traits feat Elisabeth Troy - Fever enters at #36

London based DJ and producer Brianna Price makes a top 40 debut under the name of B.Traits, as single Fever comes in at #36 this week. The track is not a cover of the Peggy Lee classic, the Cascada track or even the Starsailor album track, it is an original dance song featuring vocals from Elisabeth Troy. B.Traits is now hosting her own monthly show on BBC Radio 1 and has an album due out shortly.

Madonna tops the album charts

Madonna scores her 12th UK #1 album this week as MDNA follows on from her last 5 studio albums and compilation Celebration, making her the most successful solo artist ever with regard to #1 albums (beating Elvis Presley's record). Just behind Madonna is David Guetta as he stays at #2 with Nothing But The Beat and both Emeli Sande and Adele rise back up 1 place. Following her appearence (and the performance of several tracks) on The Voice, Jessie J finds herself at #5 with Who You Are. Katy Perry's extended version of Teenage Dream : The Complete Confection is at #6 this week, following her drop of 1-4 in the singles chart with Part Of Me. Tennor Noah Stewart enters at #14, also rock band Shinedown enters in at #18 just a place ahead of veteran metal rockers Iron Maden.

Personal Opinion

I really don't like this Chris Brown song at #1, it is very generic and forgettable just like most of Mr Brown's output. I was a huge fan of Plan B's Strickland Banks era however I really do not like this protest song iLL Manners, mind you I generally do not like rap so didn't expect to like this at all. Still it's not as bad as those other horrible sweary rap songs from Azaelia Banks or Jay Z/Kanye! On the other hand I really love Olly Murs new track Oh My Goodness and am also happy to see If You Wanna by The Vaccines finally become the top 40 hit it deserves to be. Not sure about Fever, it's ok I suppose but nothing special. Same can be said for Madonna's new album, she's done better in the past.
