"UK braces for terror"

BRITAIN is bracing for an imminent terrorist attack, after police said they had foiled a plot to blow up aircraft.

The UK raised its security threat level from "severe" to the highest level, "critical", today.

Police have reportedly foiled a plot to smuggle explosive devices in airline hand luggage to blow up planes in mid-flight, according to Sky News in London.

The targets were said to have been flights between the Britain and the US.

Overnight police arrested a number of people in London.

The BBC reports that the Department for Transport has set strict security measures at UK airports.

Passengers would not be allowed to take any hand luggage on to any flights in the UK, the department said.

Only the barest essentials - including passports and wallets - would be allowed on board in transparent plastic bags.

Sky said the Metropolitan Police arrests were the culmination of a big covert counter-terrorist operation lasting several months.

It followed a pre-planned intelligence led operation by the Met's anti-terrorist branch and security service.

Police said they believed the aim was to detonate explosive devices smuggled on board the aircraft in hand luggage.

"We would like to reassure the public that this operation was carried out with public safety uppermost in our minds," a police statement said.

"This is a major operation which inevitably will be lengthy and complex. We will provide further information as soon as possible."

Security at all UK airports was immediately increased and additional security measures have been put in place for all flights starting in the UK or involving a transfer at a UK airport.

The Department of Transport has issued an upgraded travel advisory for all commuters.

I won't go any further than that. I have my views on it. But I will keep it to myself.

yeah its freaky...youd know better then me being all the way over in england (ground zero) i wonder how it will effect rob and his concerts

it won't affect Robbie at all.

After 9/11 alot of American artists refused to fly and cancelled alot of gigs here in the UK. Matchbox 20 being one of them. I respected their decisions at the time.

Robbie still kept flying although he admitted he was quite scared. But he still carried on. I admire him for that.

don't say that osiris, there are chances I will be flying to Australia this year.

but I guess you are right, I have read a news report that it could happen in your country. There is no peace of mind anymore is there.

no put simply the world just isnt safe anymore...too many bomb nuts out there...im sure youll have a safe flight to australia

OMG this is just awfull :o

It's making me so mad that those terrorists are still able to scare us all this much

I'm already scared of flying and this is only making it worse

But i suppose an act of terrorisme can be everywhere.......

Trains, busses, stadiums........when you're at the wrong place at the wrong time it can happen

to any off us.

Im scared of flying too

Then again, I seem to be scared of everything these days

I dont think it will effect robbie concerts, hope not anyway

No i don't think it will effect the concerts either.

It better not......that way the terrorists would win

Its quite ironic that the only flights that went out on time today from Bristol were those going to New York - a good sign that terror isn't going to win here.

Loads of holiday flights were cancelled though and its still complete chaos at the airport - apparently no hand luggage at all apart from essentials such as medicines and passports, and even baby milk has to be tasted before it's allowed through.

Very very scary stuff, lets hope it all dies down by next month as I have a lot of friends coming over from the States for the Glasgow, Leeds and MK gigs.

They'd probably swim the Atlantic rather than not come though :)

Madonna has tonight delayed the start of her concert tonight after a plea from some fans on Radio 1.

They had been due to fly from Scotland and were having to drive instead .... they had phoned radio to say they were going to be a bit late and were worried.

Madonna heard & contacted Radio 1 & said she would start a bit late as there were probably quite a few people affected by flights / traffic jams

.... nice lady

Good old Madge

Robbie wanted to delay the first night of the Knebworth concert because people were stuck in traffic and he wasnt allowed to because of the noise after a certain time of night.

That's ridiculous  They could have made an exception ......it's not that often someone

is playing in Knebworth, is it

It's awfull when you see the news today and think of what could have happened .

Very, very scary :(

A poster from another forum has been confined to her house today - whilst many of her neighbours & friends have been evacuated - the arrested people all seem to have lived quite close to her -
