It’s a shame that we have so many legendary artists who are under-certified because much of their sales pre 1994 aren’t recognised.

It was 4th on her most streamed list in September 2023, compared to 8th and 9th for 'Like a Virgin' and 'Into the Groove'. It also had higher post 1994 sales in August 2019 (217k for 'Holiday', 197k f

Madonna’s 1989 No.1, Like A Prayer, also features in crucial scenes in the film, and increases consumption 134.57% to 10,497 units. Bye Bye Bye has had a reset and is on SCR but Like A Prayer remains on ACR – otherwise it would be a re-entry at No.47 this week.

Bye Bye Bye also appears on the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack album, which jumps 114-6 (2,044 sales) on the compilation chart this week. Madonna almost never allows her songs on compilations, and doesn’t make an exception for Deadpool & Wolverine. Bye Bye Bye is *Nsync’s most-consumed title, with a to-date tally of 793,057 units, while Like A Prayer has lifetime consumption of 1,489,225 units.

Nice to have lifetime sales rather than just post 1994 sales! Will have to check how these sales check out.

Number 47 that would have been nice to add to the chart run!!
Finally Enough Love is also back inside the UK Top 100 this week. I so wish it was Celebration what was recharting as that’s way more likely what’s being streamed but an extra week in the chart history books nonetheless
Yes give the sales to celebration it is a no brainer!!!

My estimate for total sales was 1.345m, based on how it was averaging (1,908 weekly sales) between August 2019 (434k post-1994 sales) and April 2021 (600k post-1994 sales).

Using the information given by Music Week, we know that between April 2021 and w/e 1st August 2024 (week prior to this chart week), its weekly average has is 2.7k (plus we know from the percentage increase that 'Like a Prayer' sold 4,475 the w/e 1st August).

Post-1994 sales now stand at 1.077m so it probably won't be long until it picks up a 2x Platinum certification, becoming Madonna's first single to do so!

It's been 5 years since we got an update of Madonna's biggest selling songs and their post-1994 sales. This is what I worked out to be the list with pre-1994 sales estimates included:

01 992,000 Into the Groove

02 932,000 Like a Virgin

03 919,000 Holiday

04 859,000 Like a Prayer

05 794,000 Crazy for You

06 745,000 Hung Up

07 729,000 Papa Don't Preach

08 667,000 Vogue

09 638,000 4 Minutes

10 627,000 True Blue

11 608,000 Frozen

12 559,000 La Isla Bonita

13 557,000 Beautiful Stranger

14 499,000 Material Girl

15 454,000 Music

16 413,000 Who's That Girl?

17 412,000 American Pie

18 379,000 Don't Cry For Me Argentina

19 378,000 Borderline

20 340,000 Ray of Light

The yearly averages for each song were also given - assuming everything sold at the same rate, this would be the list today:

01 [04] 1,194,000 Like a Prayer (+335k)

02 [01] 1,167,000 Into the Groove (+175k)

03 [02] 1,132,000 Like a Virgin (+200k)

04 [03] 1,124,000 Holiday (+205k)

05 [05] 934,000 Crazy for You (+140k)

06 [06] 930,000 Hung Up (+185k)

07 [07] 854,000 Papa Don't Preach (+125k)

08 [08] 852,000 Vogue (+185k)

09 [09] 843,000 4 Minutes (+205k)

10 [14] 744,000 Material Girl (+250k)

11 [12] 709,000 La Isla Bonita (+150k)

12 [10] 703,000 True Blue (+95k)

13 [11] 693,000 Frozen (+85k)

14 [13] 587,000 Beautiful Stranger (+30k)

15 [15] 514,000 Music (+60k)

16 [19] 463,000 Borderline (+85k)

17 [17] 457,000 American Pie (+45k)

18 [16] 443,000 Who's That Girl? (+30k)

19 [18] 424,000 Don't Cry For Me Argentina (+45k)

20 [20] 420,000 Ray of Light (+80k)

All songs have increased on these yearly averages - some quite drastically - based on information we've received in the five years since. These are some totals based on that info:

1,489,000 Like a Prayer (+295k)

1,188,000 Into the Groove (+21k)

1,118,000 Hung Up (+188k)

991,000 Material Girl (+247k)

799,000 La Isla Bonita (+90k)

601,000 Beautiful Stranger (+14k)

523,000 Music (+9k)

448,000 Ray of Light (+28k)

425,000 Don't Cry For Me Argentina (+1k)

Based on this, 'Crazy for You' should also be over 1m. With 'Frozen', we also need to consider sales for the Fireboy DML, 070 Shake and 'Frozen on Fire' remixes (but not the original Sickick remix) so could easily be over 800k.

I reckon 'Live to Tell' is also over 400k. It placed 18th on Madonna's best streamed songs in October 2023, between 'Music' and 'Ray of Light' which had been averaging 264 and 413 chart sales respectively. If we say 'Live to Tell' averages 300 chart sales a week, it would increase its total of 331k in April 2019 to 414k today.

This is my updated list based on all available info I have:

01 [08/24] 1,489,000 Like a Prayer (inc. streams)

02 [08/24] 1,188,000 Into the Groove (inc. streams) (estimate)

03 [08/24] 1,132,000 Like a Virgin (inc. streams) (estimate)

05 [08/24] 1,118,000 Hung Up (inc. streams) (estimate)

06 [08/24] 991,000 Material Girl (inc. streams) (estimate)

07 [08/24] 934,000 Crazy for You (inc. streams) (estimate)

08 [08/24] 854,000 Papa Don't Preach (inc. streams) (estimate)

09 [08/24] 852,000 Vogue (inc. streams) (estimate)

15 [08/24] 601,000 Beautiful Stranger (inc. streams) (estimate)

"Hung Up" is now certified 2x Platinum in the UK, becoming Madonna's second song to achieve an official multi-platinum certification.

Nice! I had it on an estimated 1.118m as of August 2024 so it seems it’s has been selling at a higher rate than before. I think potentially five Madonna songs could have sold over 1.2m in total: Like a Prayer, Into the Groove, Like a Virgin, Holiday and Hung Up.

Deserves so much more but nice to see a new certification.

I think it’s amongst her most iconic and I remember beginning to really follow the charts around the time this was released so it’s amongst my earliest memories of stanning a pop song

'Finally Enough Love' falls short of the 2024 Album Chart after achieving a #86 position in 2023. It sold an estimated 84k in 2024, taking its total to 215k. If Madonna does release a new album in 2025, I could see this collection going Platinum by the end of year!

RIP to Madonna’s record for most number one albums by a female, now overtaken by Taylor Swift. Not sure when Madonna had established the record.
