Everything looked rather rosy for this track making the top in this thread. A good, strong first week sale (128k) and not disgracing itself in the next fortnight by moving 1-2-6, it would have finally topped the charts had it not been for the sensational first week sale of a certain Ms Spears.

 

never liked Praise You and the video was awful. Spike Jones is very over rated.

Naturally Ms Spears also put paid to Lenny Kravitz's chances of a No 1, by the time he had accumulated decent sales Spears had sailed well clear of him and a very distant second place was the best he could offer. Used on a TV Commercial of the time the track was familiar to millions before it hit the stores which aided his real chart No 1 position but doesn't come close to THAT school girl promo in providing headlines in February 99.

Steps stays on top for 3 weeks, then is knocked off by the Offspring, who the following week is knocked off by Armand Van Helden who stays on top for 3 weeks as well, before beaten by Britney.

 

My suggestion is that B*Witched gets downgraded again with Blame It on the Weatherman.

Excellent to see "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" retain its position, but with an opening week of 140k and a chart run of 1-2-4-6-9 I wouldn't have expected otherwise.

 

Oh and I do quite like "Fly Away", very odd #1 though.

I don't think Armand Van Helden would have got that long. I think it's three weeks for Steps, two weeks for The Offspring, then one week for Armand Van Helden (in place of when Blondie was #1 on the real chart), and then Britney getting to #1 a week earlier because of her huge sales figure blowing away everything else.

Most of our Non numbers still make the top 3 on this thread but B*Witched's fourth No 1 single follows the fate of "To You I Belong" but gets demoted all the way to a new peak position of No 5! Of course none of this is entirely a shock I'm sure falling as it did from 1-9 the biggest drop in 9 years though its end sales were considerably more than the Iron Maiden track in early 1991 whcih had a similar descent.

Between a combo of Westlife and Shanks & Bigfoot May 1999 was all sown up which means a couple of boyband chart toppers take the bullet. First up US band Backstreet Boys who lose their only chart topper thanks to a reasonable sale for "Swear It Again", the track sold a very respectable 214k in 21 days but by that time it was up against bigger sellers from the aforementioned groups.

After fending off the real life challenge of Geri Halliwell Boyzone find Shanks & Bigfoot a challenge too far, but then any song that debuts on sales of more than a quarter of a million is always prove tough competition. If you include "A Different Beat" then this is the third Boyzone track to get relegated ont his thread halving their total tally of chart toppers.

 

I have very few good memories on early 1999. I spent most of it listening to 1998 albums - a classic year for albums.

Perhaps a little bit of surprise one here, The Vengaboys first chart topper misses out here despite a very good 21 day sale of 272k ordinarily enough to make the top here. In a year of big selling debuts ATB's "9 PM (Til I Come)" was actually the third highest behind Spears and Mr Oizo and it was that debut that prevents Vengaboys from topping the charts in this thread.

Whilst they were able to ride their luck and time releases just rght in the real chart it isn't long before they come a cropper on this chart. Perhaps it's revenge for its cruel act of defying Alice Deejay the top spot by so few copies but its demotion here is to No 4 reflecting its inability (over a longer period of time) to outsell the likes of Ricky Martin and Lou Bega became its downfall, their record of getting 7 straight No 1's isn't even a starter according to this thread.

ATB was actually a no. 1 single in 1999 for two weeks with massive sales (270k first week, 108k second week)

Indeed despite only claiming one week at the top (21.08.99) it only fails to make it two by just a thousand copies as it now becomes a "nearly" W/E 28.08.99 Lou Bega this time whipping it away from them.
