Come to the cabaret

CABARET – NORWICH THEATRE ROYAL

THE Theatre Royal oozed with all the atmospheric glitz and glamour of a 1930s Berlin nightclub this week.

This superb production of Cabaret, on a four-week tour prior to moving to the West End, revealed a highly emotional history lesson, running from the outrageously titillating and debauched partying of the Weimar Republic through to a final chilling scene where the hedonistic lifestyle came crashing to an ugly end as the Nazis goose-stepped into power.

Will Young, who will be making his West End debut as Emcee, master of ceremonies at the seamy Kit Kat Club, completely commanded a role that could have been tailor-made for him.

Aside from his beautiful vocals, he was every inch the camp nightclub host, using clever insinuation and whippet fast acerbic wit, as well as a very funny and physical performance, to give a searing insight into the tragic story unfolding in the city.

Former Eastenders actress Michelle Ryan, as fesity showgirl Sally Bowles, earned her spurs with a strong and confident performance, displaying a fine voice and portraying an underlying vulnerability. There were also superb performances from Henry Luxembourg, who stepped into the role of American writer Cliff only a few days before, Siân Phillips and Linal Haft as Fräulein Schneider and Herr Schultz, and Harriet Thorpe and Nicholas Tizzard as Fräulein Kost and Ernst Ludwig.

Whilst the high-kicking dancers, slinky costumes and iconic vibrant full ensemble numbers, with live music from the onstage band, set the pulse racing, it was the final shocking scene which really hit home.JUDY FOSTER

Thanks for that TT

Promo in today's Telegraph - thanks to Gill on Baby D for the heads up:

HOT TICKET

Getting cast as the Emcee in Sam Mendes revelatory revival of Cabaret in the early nineties was the making of Alan Cumming. Could it be the making of Will Young who, for all his ongoing chart success has openly pined to thrill us in the theatre too? His stage debut in The Vortex in Manchester had mixed reviews but in theory the role of the camp, cavorting ringmaster of the Kit Kat Klub - seedy embodiment of swinging Weimare-era Berlin, should play to his pop star strengths.

Also shouldering much expectation as Rufus Norris's double Olivier winning revival gears up for a return to the West End is Michelle Ryan, best known as trouble magnet Zoe Slater in Eastenders. She follows in the immortal steps of Liza Minnelli as cabaret diva Sally Bowles.

And to Abbie for the scan:

He's already "made" - this is just adding to his CV :funky:

Thanks munchkin. :D I keep visualising how the stage would look, and it was nothing like the picture. Looks brilliant. Keeping everything crossed that the London reviews are as good as the provincial ones.

It was very very basic Chrysalis. All the actors shifted the props around when they needed. Made use of metal staircases(like the one Will used on the summer tour) etc. and a couple of beds  The orchestra had their own balcony onstage and were occasionally hidden with a curtain.

I went to the Lowry last night for the last show before it transfers to the West End and the show was great! :yahoo:

Had better seats than when I first saw it a month ago and it made a big difference, felt more involved somehow.

They had tweaked some of the scenes as Sian Phillips said they would do as they moved around the provincial theatres, and the changes were very good.

Would recommend anyone to see it at the Savoy theatre. :cheer: Will is awesome!

Glad you had a great time ros. :D The London critics better give good reviews. :arrr: There really will be something wrong with them if they don't.

Well I'm sure a few of them will be sharpening knives, but overall the majority surely can't fail to acknowledge a great show and cast.

I'm on holiday at the moment. Would someone bring over any new reviews.

Thanks for your report Ros. Can't wait to go again in December. :w00t:

You would have hoped so wouldn't you suggy, but you know what the London critics are like, find fault with the tiniest thing, like Will moving slightly to the right when he should have moved slightly to the left.

Thanks Sunday that's brilliant. :D

New pictures :) Below was in Telegraph today - I LOVE IT :) And there's another new one on the Savoy Theatre (seen it on a Facebook page), this time a close up of his face (no Michelle in either?). Much better IMO than the rather 'bland' ones they've used so far in the advertising.

OOOoo...I love the new picture, much better. Thanks so much Abbie... :D Hopefully there will be posters around the tube stations.

Luv.Diz.X.

Brilliant news to come home to. Thanks Sunday. :cheer:

Much prefer the pic in the Telegraph. Captures the role of the Emcee perfectly. Thanks Abbie
