August 5, 201213 yr Author does any forest fans have an opinion on paul anderson. he signed for bristol city about a week ago and i wondered whether hes any good? I saw him a few times when he played for Liverpool. He's your standard average winger. One good game, three very ineffective ones..

August 5, 201213 yr Author To be fair I can't think of one traditional winger off the top of my head that is not like that. It's a hard position, but it's why the need to play them inverted is so great, and so effective in modern football. They just look more threatening because they're less unpredictable with the ability to cut inside on their stronger foot. Full-backs these days are so quick that they can handle wingers 75% of the time.
August 5, 201213 yr Paul Anderson is shite, his season for Swansea was far better than any of the four he had for us. For a winger he neither assists or scores enough goals and has done bugger all for two seasons now. Of our four main OOC players he was the only one I was happy to see leave.

It's a big season for McClean in that regard, had a very good first season with us in 11/12, he's very direct, will run at defenders, always has a trick or two up his sleeve, but he needs to add more to his arsenal to really flourish in the Prem. He's still fairly young though, and the fact he's been so solid having come over as an unknown entity from the Irish leagues speaks for itself. He can still improve. I'd still like to see someone else on the right, as a bit of competition for Seb, who as i've said, tends to have 1 good game for every 2 or 3 very average ones. Wouldn't say no to Matt Phillips, who we've been linked with. The Adam Johnson rumours refuse to die as well, despite the fact it just won't happen. Edited August 5, 201213 yr by Y!kes

Wouldn't say no to Matt Phillips, who we've been linked with. The Adam Johnson rumours refuse to die as well, despite the fact it just won't happen. I think McClean's good. But certainly needs to add another aspect to his game to be a consistent top player. All these young wingers can be found out very quickly. It's like Daniel Sturridge with his trick he used to do. It's why I think Wenger is being very careful with Oxlade-Chamberlain aswell. He needs to add more to his game, and if defenders figure out how to control them they just become Aaaron Lennon. I just think wingers are dying out. I Manchester United are the only top team that fully utilises wingers, and even then theyre moving more towards attacking forwards. None of the big successful teams play with out and out orthodox wingers, because it can be like playing with 9 or 10 men at times.
August 5, 201213 yr I'm looking forward to watching Reading in that respect. Flat 4-4-2 with wingers that stay wide is their natural game, the addition of McCleary doesn't suggest they're going to change it.

Flat 4-4-2 with wingers that stay wide is their natural game, the addition of McCleary doesn't suggest they're going to change it. Think they'll struggle, especially against the bigger teams that will control the midfield. I think they'll struggle the most out of the promoted teams.
August 5, 201213 yr Their signings have all been really good to be fair. Three strong teams coming up, going to be entertaining and tough to call at the bottom.
August 5, 201213 yr Darren Ferguson has apparently said Peterborough won't be making any more signings, horrific looking squad for the new season if that's true, can't find anything about him saying it for definite though. Assuming Boyd and Taylor still head off, the first 11 will be this. Gk - Olejnik RB - Alcock (been out injured all pre-season) - Richens (18 year old youth player) CB - Zakuani/Brisley LB - Rowe (out til November) - Ntlhe (youth player) CM - Bostwick CM - Frecklington RM - Swanson LM - Kearns CF - Tomlin CF - Barnett Yeah, as awful as it sounds. 2 youth players at full back :D

Ji Dong-Won as your lone striker, for example. Jesus wept
August 5, 201213 yr Have McCann/Boyd/Taylor been sold yet? If they have where has the money gone? If not will they not be in the team somewhere...
August 5, 201213 yr Have McCann/Boyd/Taylor been sold yet? If they have where has the money gone? If not will they not be in the team somewhere... None have gone yet. A bid came in for Taylor the other day but got rejected, he'll be off though soon without doubt, even though I really don't think he's good enough to go much higher anyway. Boyd apparently might be staying, but it's the last year of his contract and he doesn't really want to stay. Just don't think anyone's come in with a decent bid yet. And McCann doesn't want to leave, Ferguson wants rid because he's old and on big wages, so I can see him staying but I don't think Ferguson will start him much, he'll get some games though.
August 7, 201213 yr Author Arsenal have signed Carzola officially (great signing for them) Sunderland have made a £12m mid for Fletcher... Suarez has signed a new "long-term" deal with Liverpool
August 7, 201213 yr Sunderland have made a £12m mid for Fletcher... And it's apparently been accepted. Annoyed, he isn't worth £12m. But the whole thing has been rumbling on for so long and we're so desperate for players that i'm just happy to see something productive happening.
August 7, 201213 yr Author Not worth £12m at all, but decent striker. Could probably buy a lot worse for that money aswell. I just don't buy the theory that strikers that perform well in struggling teams will automatically make the step up to a bigger club!

I just don't buy the theory that strikers that perform well in struggling teams will automatically make the step up to a bigger club! Yeah, agree with everything you've said there. That said, if he scores us the goals we need then £12m will seem like money well spent. We still need one more striker in, however, because if he gets injured we're left with Ji, Wickham and Campbell  Hopefully this'll set the wheels in motion and we'll get that 2nd striker + a winger, a creative central midfielder and a right back. Probably won't happen but they're certainly the positions we should be looking at.
August 7, 201213 yr Any player who scores 30 league goals in three seasons in shite teams is worth having, always rated Fletcher.
August 7, 201213 yr I'm hoping Peterbrough do well because of Danny Swanson, injury prone but he's a real game changer!
