ISTR one or two in the past, but not precisely which they were?

I thought I'd ask the question, just in case...

ABBA's "Waterloo" and Nicole's "A Little Peace".

Gina G was Australian, but she finished 8th in her year.

Dana - All Kinds of Everything (1970, Ireland)

ABBA - Waterloo (1974, Sweden)

Johnny Logan - What's Another Year (1980, Ireland)

Nicole - A Little Peace (1982, Germany)

And during that 1970-1982 run, every single winner bar one (1977) made the top 20!

Can't believe I forgot ABBA. :P

I didn't even think about the Irish ones, though.

Gina G had such a massive hit but when it came to Eurovision she was robbed and the sales of the song proved it.
Those are all the non-UK winners up there IIRC. Johnny Logan got to #2 with Hold Me Now in 1987, and I recall Dana International - Diva (1998) and Charlotte Nilsson (now Perrelli; 1999) - Take Me To Your Heaven both being top twenty hits.
Really hope that Swedish rubbish doesn't become the 5th.

You see - there's various ways of looking at it.

Taken as a song - without the Eurovision connection - it's isn't very special or unique but it is a tiny bit better than the average shite that gets to number 1 so I see no harm in it going to number if it stops the likes of The Wanted getting there. Then again, this isn't a very ambitious attitude and we should always hope for great number ones as opposed to merely slightly better than the usual shite.

But - I can see why people got caught up in the performance aspect of it - it was off-beat and intriguing and re-watching the performance is more enjoyable than listening to the mp3 for me, at least, so I can see many people taking to the song just because of the performance.

I am still battling with whether I like it or not but I can see both sides of the argument.

It was by far the most contemporary of a generally-typical-Eurovision bunch. It's not a great song, nor was it sung particularly well on the night but I had it in my top 3 along with Germany & Bosnia-Herzogovina, I had the UK in the bottom 3 along with Hungary and Russia.
