2012 has been a big year for artists coming out of nowhere to have a hit. Does the future look good for any of them? Here are some examples

Rita Ora - Recently she hit #1 with "Hot Right Now" and "R.I.P." and I think with the right single choices she could be big and have a lasting career. I can't see her next single doing terribly to be honest.

fun. - They are currently the UK's official #1 with "We Are Young". I think they've got another top 40 in them but it won't be massive like WAY.

Carly Rae Jepsen - If she releases a new single soon I think it could go top 10. It's hard to call because "Call Me Maybe" screamed one-hit wonder, but so did "Pon de Replay" and "I Kissed A Girl" and look at how big RiRi and Katy are today.

Gotye - His next single should get a little Radio 2 support but won't do much chart wise. STIUTK will probably be the biggest selling one-hit wonder that isn't charity related, as I can't see him having another T40.

Alex Clare - "Too Close" was lucky to be featured on that advert and become a hit that way, so I don't think his next single will do that much.

Azealia Banks - It's been a long time since "212" but I think with the right songs she could be the new Nicki Minaj.

Conor Maynard - His next single and debut album should both go top 10 I think, he won't last long after that however.

Discuss new artists you think have a future in them and ones that will be forgotten by this time next year.

Azealia Banks is American, but I do think she could do well with the right follow-up single.

 didn't realise that. It's not often that we get American artists that aren't big there, so I assumed she was British. I think there's a lot of life left in her, "212" is such a brilliant debut, the hits can't just stop there.

Rita Ora. R.I.P is awful but if she goes with How We Do next she will have another big hit.

Gotye. The second i heard STUIK it was clear he was a one hit wonder, none of his other songs are any good.

Azealia Banks. 212 is amazing but nothing else from her is as good as that she might have another top 20 but i cant see her album doing much.

I have not heard any other songs from the rest so i cant judge them.

'How We Do (Party)' could easily be a third straight #1 for Rita.

The rest of that list all seem like one hit wonders with the possible exception of Azealia Banks and Conor Maynard (maybe Carly Rae Jepsen too if she has any more good songs).

I remember that i lost a bet about Katy Perry!!! My best friend thought that Katy Perry would have had a better career than Miley Cyrus. I believed the opposite site. I totally lost the bet and i became a big fan of Katy Perry after all!! "I kissed a girl" was not my favourite but her "Teenage Dream Era" is awesome!!!

Rita Ora is going to be massive. She's had a team building her up for years, and it's paying off. She'll be easily as big as Jessie J by the end of the year I think.

Pretty much all the rest of that list will be one hit wonders bar Azealia I think, she could be pretty big if the material is as good as 212. Carly Rae Jepsen could have a chance I guess as well, she has nothing as good as Call Me Maybe but there are a couple of songs in the same vein on her EP that are different enough to work as follow-up singles. Connor Maynard should get another top 10 but his album will probably relatively bomb and he'll be unlikely to get another era.

Rita Ora is gonna be huge, she is even being considered for a guest judge role on the X Factor this year apparently! :lol:I can see the others all pretty much being one hit wonders, Conor Maynard isn't distinctive enough to challenge or convert the legions of fans of Justin Bieber

Rita Ora is gonna be huge, she even is being considered for a guest judge role on the X Factor this year apparently!

She's already filmed the day's judging as a guest and apparently is frontrunner for the permanent judge :o Geri Halliwell was apparently a 'cert' but she messed up in her guest slot so isn't getting it now. I don't think Rita will get it though, there's no point in two cool young females of pretty much the same age being on the panel.

Rita Ora - If she releases How We Do (Party), she will do well! It's much better than R.I.P

fun. - Some Nights will be their next hit, and will get around Top 20. But after that, it's all over for them here.

Carly Rae Jepsen - Curiostity is her next hit, already recieving good YouTube support, so should do well here once played on Radio.

Gotye - Eyes Wide Open will flop, but there are other good songs on his LP Making Mirrors, so don't give up hope for him next.

Alex Clare - I can't imagine him getting another hit like Too Close. Maybe one more, but that's it

Azealia Banks - The British version of Nicki Minaj will hopefully do well with her debut album.

Conor Maynard - He's Britain's Justin Bieber, but won't last as long as man himself

Conor Maynard - The fact 'Can't Say No' has a chart run of 02-04-12-16-25-35 suggests that even his held back debut wasn't the 'big' hit it could have/would have been if released a bit earlier. He has the advantage of Youtube/a particular fanbase, so we'll have to see how well single #2 does; but I just see it performing similarly to the debut - followed by an easily forgettable album (unless of course working with Pharrell has drawn some collaborations/decent production).

Azealia Banks - Material from Banks has been in demand for months now. '212' came out a month ago, and the '1991' EP released yesterday is as high as #8 on iTunes currently. A mixtape is set to follow in a month or two and the album is eagerly anticipated by critics, it'll be hard for Azealia NOT to maintain her public profile. As to whether she'll have another 'big' hit, I'm sure of it - but 'Liqourice' (which has a music video ready) is now available on the EP, so it's selection as a potential second single will be hindered by the '1991' EP.

Rita Ora - 'How We Do (Party)' is doing well on Australian/New Zealand iTunes, so it looks like a promising hit here in the UK too. Whether it'll be #1 though is a different question. It's likely to be a July/August release - which is a period famous for one-weeked number-ones. There's bound to be some big collaborations/producers on the album too - and with the reception from her X-Factor Auditions, she's bound to become a popular household name.
