Take That, George Michael to feature in London 2012 closing ceremony

A selection of big names in pop have been confirmed for the Olympics closing ceremony, including Take That, The Who and George Michael.

The two-and-a-half hour show will be held in London's Olympic Park, and watched live by a potential audience of millions.

A committee source told the Daily Mirror: "It is imperative the games close in spectacular fashion and that there is substance as well as style.

"The committee wanted four major artists, representing Britain over the past 50 years, to headline."

The finale to the London 2012 games will also feature Emeli Sandé and is being overseen by Kim Gavin, who worked as creative director on Take That's comeback 'Circus' tour.

A spokesman for Gavin said: "Kim has worked with Take That before and the boys, including Robbie Williams, will put on their most dazzling show."

I think this is great news! Can't wait to see them perform for millions worldwide and it wont harm their album/single sales either!

So am I! They must have a lengthy bit of a set then if Rob will be involved, unless its a medley. Id love a bit of greatest day, shine, the flood, back for good, rule the world and never forget. Never Forget has to be the last song though, it would be fantastic!!

back for good is their best selling single and if it is going out to a worldwide audience then they cant exclude the single that topped the charts in 31 countries
Thats only my wish, i have nver made any secret of the fact im not overly keen on the song and prefer so many others to it.

Yeah, i guess it all depends on how long they will be given to perform their set. At least with Rob in the mix they will appeal to the territories that Progress did very well in. We may even get new peaks on a couple of singles/albums internationally *with any luck!*

I could see it playing out like Progress with TT playing Greatest Day and Shine as a 4 and then Rob comes flying down from somewhere and makes a big entrance to perform The Flood, with them back together to do Relight, BFG, Never Forget and Rule the World ...........possibly

It will without doubt give singles they perform a boost, im not sure about any new peaks unless they 100% shock us and perform when we were young, i think that may be the only single that could get a new peak from a performance but i cant see that happening at all. If anything the Never Forget: Ultimate Collection will benefit the most in the UK market.

I hope they don't do When We Were Young Pippa - its really not strong enough. No - they'll have to perform something that's almost universally known. I'd like to think they'd do Never Forget and maybe Back For Good - they may even do a medley. As much as I'm not a fan of Greatest Day - I do think that that song actually fits the bill for the occasion. Having said that - it depends on how well the GB Olympic team do of course! If they come away with three bronzes and a balloon - then perhaps Greatest Day isn't the best choice of song to sing!

Excellent point. Greatest Day is a very fitting song for celebratory occasions, and should the Olympic Team win it is indeed a very fitting song. That said, it probably wouldnt be the best selection should there be no winners but i cant see that happening. Never Forget and Back for Good will no doubt get played but Rule The World would be a very fitting song for such an occasion. With it hopefully been such a joyful occasion shine and/or up all night would both go down a storm. However, with Robbie performing with them it could rule out Rule the World, Shine and Up all Night and instead put the Flood on the playlist.

Like i said, i could imagine them doing a Progress styled set with TT4 doing Shine, Greatest Day and RTW before Rob enters dramatically to perform the flood, then all 5 do back for good and never forget.

Can't see them doing WWWY or Up All Night to be honest. They have better songs at their disposal.

A Rob single could also be done, possibly along the lines of No Regrets where TT sing backing vocals and then it merging into another song..

I seriously doubt that they'll do TT4, Rob then TT5 (or any combination of) - it is the closing ceremony for the Olympics after all - not a TT/Robbie Williams promotion/concert). So - I'm suspecting it'll be TT5 only with a maximum of three songs. That is of course if the whole thing has been confirmed.

Ya id say 3 songs at most is the slot they will get and with robbie involved its likely it will be the flood, back for good and never forget, but i agree that greatest day depending on results would be a very fitting song, surely robbie could slot a vocal somewhere into the song if need be.

They should try and surprise us and switch around, surely Robbie could add a vocal (like you said Aphrodite) to a song if needed be like Greatest Day or Rule the World and it could also be interesting to turn a Robbie solo song into a Take That song, it would be something different and may help put a differnt spin on a song.

Should something like this occur which Robbie solo single do you think would suit to turn in a Take That song?

I agree Pippa! In a way that No Regrets became a TT song with Robbie singing lead and the others singing backing!

What is Robbie's biggest international hit? They could well do that one whatever it is. I'd also be interested to hear Rob singing on TT4 material as a backing vocalist. He already did Shine in the live lounge, and loves RTW and the whole Circus era which he states loads of time in interviews etc

I would assume Angels is his biggest international hit. No regrets would be a good choice, come undone could potentially be another.
Not sure what song i would pick that would suit them, no regrets could work but for some strange reason id love to see them all do let me entertain you.

Haha so would I or maybe a quick medley of Robbie's solo stuff in 2/3 mins. Maybe like 30 secs of LMEY, Supreme, NR and Angels?? But then that probably wont happen as its TT headlining not Robbie. I could imagine Robbie wanting to do Rudebox  he always seems to slip that AWFUL rap in to his set somewhere

I think nearly everyone hates Rudebox. Im really not sure why he persists with using it. He dropped it into Kidz last summer and then he did the same at his medley at the Brits and looking back at some of his live performances after its release it keeps popping its head up into his sets.
