Posted June 17, 201213 yr Excuse me if there was a thread about this album already, I couldn't find it. So, what do you think of Saint Etienne's new album? I'd imagine they'd be quite popular on Buzzjack seeing the kind of music they make. I was pleasantly surprised by the new album. I love the haunted sound that 'Twenty Five Years' gives me and almost every other song has a catchy bridge or instrumental part. I don't really care about the interlude, it doesn't fit in at all imo but overall the album is really good and I like the fact the album has a bit of a theme going on. My favorites are 'Twenty Five Years', 'When I Was Seventeen', 'Threw It All Away' and opener 'Over the Border'.
June 17, 201213 yr Over The Border is stunning, one of the best examples of a 'spoken verse' record in years, very Black Box Recorder. The two singles are my other highlights but it's a strong album throughout.
June 17, 201213 yr Over The Border is DEEPLY PRETENTIOUS and also a COMPLETE MOMENT 'There were these older kids at school who'd gone all the way to Somerset just to see Peter Gabriel's house...PETER GABRIEL FROM GENESIS'
June 17, 201213 yr 'In 1974 I bought my first single, from Woolies in Redhill, I started to memorise the charts' I very nearly sent it to BJSC but doubted whether many people would appreciate the sentiment.
June 17, 201213 yr This is actually the first album that I have ever listened to by them, and I really liked it (surprise!). Nothing really stands out but at the same time everything's very cohesive and VERY pleasing. The second part starting with 'Popular' is better than the first one. 'Over the Border' reminds me of Pet Shop Boys somehow.

I also considered them for BJSC. But more like 'DJ', 'Popular', 'When I Was Seventeen' or 'Haunted Jukebox'.
June 18, 201213 yr Author I've also briefly considered sending 'Over the Border' :D I think it would've done (/would do) better than you might expect.
