Same here but it's worth getting the preview for free, features all the introductory blurb and the first four million sellers from the 50's.

I checked for the 'free preview' option, but couldn't see it?

"Actually you can buy it on two albums on iTunes- '100 Hits of the '70s' and 'The Best Year of My Life: 1972'. Artists is credited to The Pipes and Drums of the Military Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards."

The former is likely to be a rerecording as that series of compilations does use rerecordings, though the OCC may possibly still add the sales to the original I guess, the latter one I'm not sure about as I don't know if that series uses original recordings throughout or not?

I'm a bit of a purist and I'm trying to get original recordings of every number one since the chart started, Amazing Grace is one I'm finding thorny since the Guards have issued many albums over the years obviously with different lineups and recordings, another is Bright Eyes as I have two Art Garfunkel albums but both turned out on closer inspection to be a live recording, unless the original was a live recording maybe.

Lucky I waited for a bit, I can get the book a little bit cheaper now.

Bright Eyes is on the Art Garfunkel compilation released last month.

Ful list here for anyone that doesn't visit the Chart Archive forum.

A thought occurred to me - I wonder how the list would look if adjusted for the relative level of UK population at the time of each song's release? In the mid-50's the UK population was only around 52m, wheras now it is 61m, which gives a 17% advantage to songs released very recently...

If you did that I think you'd have to adjust for other things, illegal downloading, home taping, inflation - too many things have changed.

And as previously reported the sales data pre-94 isn't 100% accurate, best to just keep it as it is I reckon.

Reading the list I'm still shocked by Bruno Mars having a million selling single.
Why, he makes music that appeals to a broad range of people - especially with songs like JTWYA!
Yeah alot of people don't like his music, im easy. But it is undeniably got a broad appeal which most radio stations jump on for months on end.
Don't get the huge dislike for Bruno on here. If Rihanna has 3 million sellers and even Jessie J has one, I see no problem with JTWYA being one.
