1974 is of course the classic year for Eurovision, 4 Top 20 Hits in the UK, and one that just missed the charts (Luxembourg) and Abba.

All of which goes to show that, 1967 (the first contest I watched) to 1975 is my classic period for Eurovision, but the last 8 years is the best period of all-time, so many great entries. The Best record never to win the contest is from 1973, Mocedades was an international hit (even big in the USA) but not in the UK, criminally. It's a melody to die for, soaring and majestic, and deserves to be better known outside Spain..

Sebastien Tellier was just brilliant, better known for adverts in the UK, the song is whimsical, delightful, original. Fab.

So different with my opinion

About my ranking:

My top winners (Spoiler: were # 1 in my personal rankings):

1. France Gall (1965) Perfect Top 2: + Kathy Kirby

2. Dana (1970) Perfect Top 2: + Mary Hopkin

3. Lena Meyer-Landrut (2010) Best song won.

4. Bucks Fizz (1981), but "Johnny Blue" also was good

5. ABBA (1974)

+ Nicole (1982) was second after Mess - Sonntag.

"Tom Philibi" and "Boom-Bang-A-Bang" were my # 1, but I'm not huge fan.

1974: My favourite year with very interesting ranking: 1. Sweden, 2. Germany, 3. Ireland, 4. Norway, 5. Finland

(Olivia Newton-John # 6, Mouth & MacNeal # 8)

1980: Maybe best top 5 in the history of ESC. Every song from top 5 (Ireland, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Switzerland) could be great winner.

My favourite period: 1965-1985 (only some years were not very good)

About your ranking:

Fairytale : Most deserved winner in last 30 years after Nicole in 1982. Masterpiece level.

Waterloo : One word: AMAZING !!!!

Come What May : I'm prefer "L'Amour Est Bleu"

Ding A Dong : Good

Save All Your Kisses For Me : cute song, but not "Mata Hari", which was my favourite and came last.

Non Ho L’Eta Per Amarti, Wonderful Dream : Good, but not for me.

Love Shine A Light, Puppet On A String : not bad, but Great Britain didn't win with more deserved songs in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985

I hate "Euphoria". It's worst winner in my opinion. (Also don't like Hallelujah)

"Nocturne" is not a song in my eyes.

Where is "Mr.Eurovision" Johnny Logan in your top?

Your losers list:

Good list, John

Best songs, which were my # 1 or I really like.

- Jack In The Box (# 1)

- Ooh Ah Just A Little Bit (# 1)

- L’Amour Est Bleu (Love Is Blue) (# 1)

- Knock Knock Who’s There (# 2)

- Playing With Fire (# 2)

- Beg Steal Or Borrow

- Love Will Set You Free

- No No Never

- I See A Star

I can't understand your love for "Divine" and especially "Love City Groove" It were very bad songs.

Thanks for the comments Alex, enjoyed reading them:) I don't mind instrumentals (Nocturne) and I love records that sound different (Divine/Love City Groove) though both of those sound brilliant on the recorded version, but not so good live (which is why they didnt do so well).

I'm sorry to say, Johnny Logan, even though he's a lovely bloke with a nice singing voice, always struck me as a little dull, though What's Another Year made my Top 40.

Love Is Blue was a big playground hit with small children in the late 60's (we all knew it) so yes, it's a great song, we just knew it in an instrumental version by Paul mauriat so I'm not used to hearing the lyrics (unless it's in the rock version by Jeff Beck)

Mary Hopkin was the lady who got me hooked on charts, as a kiddie I was insanely obsessed with Those Were The Days (and later Goodbye and Temma Harbour and Knock Knock...) Loved her!

cheers

john

Thanks for all your topics, John.

Mary Hopkin, Clodagh Rodgers, Cilla Black, Dana, France Gall, Kathy Kirby...

I love all these ladies. It's a reason, because I like old female pop music, mostly from Great Britain.

Sad, that it's was rock period in UK charts and these wonderful ladies weren't not successful as they could be.
