Yes there are some fabulous singles about from young acts, brilliant Top 5, absolutely love them all but fun still is the most exciting record about for a 2nd week at number one. Which keeps Of Monsters & Men at 2. Pink jumps up to 3, and continues to the bridesmaid of my charts: she's been having Top 10's since 2000 in my chart but never managed higher than 3. Can she finally do it? Previous biggest hit was No.3 So What..

Which leaves big leaps and new entries from the vetarans: Sparks & Gemma Ray up to 7, Sparks last sat next to Elton John in my Top Ten in 1974, Bennie & The Jets/This Town Aint Big Enough...

In at 9 Deacon Blue, absent from my charts since the early 90's, and a cracker track to return with. Beach Boys re-enter with new single off the new album. OK, it's not up to their 60's standards, but it's good, and for a band of men in their 70's it's great to have them still making decent music. Just to note that the Beach Boys were in my first ever chart in 1968, so that's exactly 44 years of new chart material. Place your bets on which bands today will still be making new albums in 2056! The Killers I reckon...

Big leap for the new Muse hit, new in for 80's vets Roxette, and 60's veteran Jeff Lynne covers Etta James and enters lower down. Who? He was in the Move (and so has 42 years of hits) but is famous for being the man behind Electric Light Orchestra who hit number one in virtually every year in my chart from 1972 through to 1986. He went on the Traveling Wilburies, produced The Beatles 90's comeback singles and is a genuine all-time fave of mine.

and finally, Pet Shop Boys new track Invisible enters, lamenting old people's invisibility in pop culture and life generally. Hooray! Bout time someone said it, I get fed up being categorized as "old". I still love new pop music, new movies, love TV shows like Family Guy & Dr Who, enjoy going out (just can't manage 3am finishes anymore!). We don't all enjoy watching reruns of Last Of The Summer Wine and Bingo... I suggest everyone grow old disgracefully like Madonna, and ignore everyone telling you how you should act at your age!

Great mixture of best from new music and oldies but goldies tracks!

These songs are in my Chart now:

5 5 9 RUNAWAYS The Killers 267750

9 9 1 THE HIPSTERS Deacon Blue 45000

13 13 4 CELEBRATE Mika/Pharrell Williams 96000

Great Chart, John!

thanks Andrey, I've too many oldies in at the moment, their are some bubbling under new tracks, but I cant resist allowing oldies in if theyve not charted or underperformed before and they are in the album chart, singles chart or Top 40 Heritage Chart...:)

Thanks Jason. I must stop typing fun. and change it to .fun :)

Hope the Killers go Top 10 but I suspect you're right, we live in rough times for Rock singles, though it all goes in circles, rock, pop and dance tend to alternate on 10 yearly cycles or so..

cheers!

Thanks Tom, for all the indepth comments! I agree with .fun, I'm also buying the Pet Shop Boys (laidback) album, I suppose the EP tracks didnt fit the mood, but you're right they are strong enough to be singles in their own right, and Je Ne Sais Quoi has just one dodgy half-line which could easily be replaced with a better turn of phrase to make a great song!

I usually like Mika records, even the flops sound like hits to me, had they come out 6 years ago...

I heard the Grace Jones track for the first time, proper, on Radio 2, so as it hadnt really charted before....:)

Bananarama's Venus is fab, but the quirky hippy Top Of The Pops Dutch original is charming too (also never charted before)

Roxette, yes I'd love them to tour the UK...

No, not heard Agnetha's version, but she can do no wrong in my eys so I'm bound to like it!

thanks again

cheers!

john
