Singer Andy Williams dies aged 84

Source: MW

Singer Andy Williams died yesterday (September 25) at his home in Branson, Missouri, aged 84, following a year-long battle with cancer.

The vocalist was particularly popular in the Sixties and is well-known for hits including Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Happy Heart and Music To Watch Girls By.

His signature song will be remembered as Mercer/Mancini's Moon River, which Williams first performed at the Oscars in 1962, but which never charted as a single.

Williams hosted the Grammy Awards nine times between 1971 and 1983, has 11 gold-certified and three platinum-certified albums. The Andy Williams Show achieved a nine-year run and garnered three Emmy Awards.

He took the song Butterfly to No.1 in the US and the UK in 1957. Other late Fifties US hits also included Are You Sincere? (1958, No.3), Lonely Street (1959, No.5) and The Village of St. Bernadette (1959, No.7).

Williams' single Can't Get Used To Losing You (1963) reached No.2 in the US and the UK, but it would be five more years until Can't Take My Eyes Off You - now seen as a classic song and a standard of the singer - would hit No.5 in the UK.

His family has asked that any donations be made to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.

the greatest of the crooners in my book, brilliant voice, my generation loved his variety show/cookie bear, and a load of great hits - his versions were often the definitive versions. Saw him live at age 80 the other year, just as engaging as ever, even if he wasnt as sprightly. Best moment? "Almost There", brings tears to my eyes every time!
