28.05.1994 : Pretenders - I'll Stand By You (1 week # 1)

http://www.radioromantika.ru/vardata/modules/lenta/images/20000/2676_2_1316419922.jpg

"I'll Stand by You" is a 1994 song recorded by Pretenders from their sixth studio album "Last of the Independents". It was written by Chrissie Hynde in collaboration with the songwriting team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. "I'll Stand by You" reached number 10 in the United Kingdom. Higher, than "Night in My Veins", the album's first single.

The song is a power ballad that pledges love and faithful assistance in times of personal darkness.

In 2004, the British all-female pop group Girls Aloud recorded a cover of "I'll Stand by You" as the official Children in Need charity single. It became Girls Aloud's second number one on the UK Singles Chart, spending two weeks at the top position and receiving a silver certification from the British Phonographic Industry.

I prefer Girls Aloud's version. Their cover also would be # 1 in 2004.

30.07.1994 : Shampoo - Trouble (8 weeks # 1)

http://991.com/NewGallery/Shampoo-Trouble-42055.jpg

Forget about Spice Girls and All Siants, Shampoo was the best British girl group from 90s decade.

Shampoo were an English all-girl band in the 1990s, formed by Jacqueline "Jacqui" Blake and Caroline "Carrie" Askew. Whilst their first two singles were typical of the Riot Grrl bands then coming to notice, the following year saw the release of their most famous song, "Trouble" and the album "We Are Shampoo" which displayed a much more radio friendly sound.

"Trouble" crashed up the charts to No. 11 and landed the girls on "Top Of The Pops" and the cover of "Smash Hits" magazine. For the remainder of 1994 Shampoo did well, finding fans in both the mainstream and alternative music scenes - boosted in part by their links to Manic Street Preachers fanscene; however they also drew scathing comment from those within the small UK Riot Grrrl scene who saw the band as a repeat of We've Got A Fuzzbox And We're Gonna Use It's "sellout" to commercialism.

First song with more than six weeks on the top after Madonna's ultimate hit "Material Girl" in 1985.

17.09.1994 : Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me (2 weeks # 1)

http://klipi.info/uploads/taginator/Dec-2012/kylie-minogue-confide-in-me.jpg

"Confide in Me" is a song by Australian recording artist and songwriter Kylie Minogue from her fifth studio album "Kylie Minogue".

The song was acclaimed by many music critics where some critics labelled it as one of Minogue's best singles to date, and praised it for its commercial release. Commercially, the song was successful, peaking in the top twenty in Finland, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland. In Minogue's native Australia, the song debuted at number thirty-one. The following week, the song dramatically rose to number one, and stayed there for four consecutive weeks, and stayed in the charts for nineteen weeks overall. To date, "Confide in Me" remains Minogue's longest single in the Australian Singles Chart, and was her first number one single since 1987 single "Got to Be Certain". In United Kingdom, the song debuted at number two on official Singles Chart. However, the song descended the whole way through the chart, only to stay in the top ten for three weeks and sold 183,000 copies.

An accompanying music video was released as well, where it featured Minogue in six different costumes, and Kylie persuading her audience to confide in her. The music video received positive reviews, and was very successful commercial wise. At the ARIA Music Awards, "Confide in Me" won three awards at the ceremony, where it won Best Selling Australian Single, Best Selling Australian Dance Single and eventually Best Video. The song also placed seventh for Best Single and third for Best Video at the 1994 Smash Hits Awards.

08.10.1994 : Madonna - Secret (4 weeks # 1)

http://allserieslinamarcela.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/secret_cd_us.jpg

"Secret" was released as the lead single from her album "Bedtime Stories". The song was a departure from the style of music that Madonna had previously released, because up to that point in her career her music had mostly been big-sounding dance tracks or melodic ballads. The song begins with just the sound of Madonna's voice singing over a rhythmic, folksy guitar, before opening up to a sparse, retro rhythm section. Madonna's voice remains at the center of the song's production, as she sings lyrics such as "happiness lies in your own hand."

The song received generally positive reviews, with critics and fans appreciating Madonna's move towards a soft and appropriate image instead of using her sexual image from previous years. Slant Magazine listed "Secret" as the 42nd "Best Singles of the '90s," stating that its "one of the most organic-sounding singles of Madonna's career, taking its sweet time to get where it's going and not giving up too much along the way.

In United Kingdom "Secret" peaked at number five on Singles Chart and sold a total of 117,957 copies in that region. "Secret" became her 35th consecutive top-ten single since "Like a Virgin" (1984), which remains an unequaled record in British chart history.

17.12.1994 : Madonna - Take A Bow (2 weeks # 1)

http://www.muzofil.com/uploads/posts/2010-09/1285055408_madonna.jpg

"Take a Bow" was released as the second single from her sixth studio album "Bedtime Stories".

"Take a Bow" received favorable reviews from music critics, who praised the song's soulful, poetic lyrics. The song was a big success in United States, becoming her eleventh number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, topping the chart for seven weeks. It was her first single to reach number-one since "This Used to Be My Playground" in 1992, and would be her last number-one song in United States in the 1990s. Elsewhere in the world, the single also had success, reaching number-one in Canada, and the top-ten in Italy, Switzerland, and New Zealand. In United Kingdom, it had moderate success, reaching number sixteen on UK Singles Chart.

"Take a Bow" ended Madonna's record string of 35 consecutive top-ten single on the UK Singles Chart from "Like a Virgin" (1984) to "Secret" (1994). This single has sold 102,739 copies in United Kingdom.

31.12.1994 : Carpenters - Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again (1 week # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/300x300/34029491.jpg

"Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" is a song written by David Pomeranz and recorded most notably by Barry Manilow in 1976.

Carpenters's version of "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" was recorded during the Horizon sessions in 1975, but it had been shelved as being "one too many ballads." Seven years after production wrapped on the song, Richard was looking for songs to include on Voice of the Heart, the first album released after Karen's untimely death from anorexia in February of 1983.

According to Richard Carpenter, the basic uncompleted rhythm tracks were found at that time, but Karen's final production vocal intended for the release of the record had been recorded over and was gone. However, many years later a "work lead" was found hidden away on a master tape that also contained the song "Only Yesterday." (A work lead can easily be identified by such anomalies as Karen flipping a sheet of paper over at about 1:50 into the play time of the song as she sight reads and sings.) Richard felt that the vocal was good enough to finish production of the song and release it, as he did in 1995, almost 20 years after it was recorded.

# 44 in the official UK Singles Chart and 10th # 1 single for Carpenters in my retrospective.

07.01.1995 : Byker Grooove - Love Your Sexy (2 weeks # 1)

Surprisingly good start for 1995 year. Usually January is a frozen time for new music. Very hard fight for # 1 between three singles. :)

21.01.1995 : Scarlet - Independent Love Song (2 weeks # 1)

http://inspiracy.com/scarlet/discog/singles/ils2-front.jpg

Scarlet was a UK based vocal duo from Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. They consisted of Cheryl Parker (vocalist, guitarist) and Jo Youle (pianist, keyboardist, vocalist). The group originally had a third member, Joanna Fox, but she left before the band had any major success.

In 1992, they signed to independent record label Haven Records and released two singles that year: "Piccadilly In The Rain (I'll Be There)" and "Shine On Me Now", neither of which charted.

In 1993, they signed to WEA, and started recording their debut album. The first single "I Really Like The Idea" was released in 1994, but it failed to chart. For reasons unknown (although rumours persist that it was on the advice of former bass-player Ed Clark), Fox left the band after the release of this single, and Parker and Youle carried on as a duo.

The duo's next single, "Independent Love Song", was released in late 1994 and became their biggest hit, peaking at number 12 in UK and number 10 in Ireland.

This was followed by their debut album "Naked", which was released in February 1995, and peaked at number 53.

The music video for "Independent Love Song" was shot in Times Square, New York. The video is shown in black-and-white and shows Cheryl Parker (vocals) sitting on a piano with Jo Youle (pianist) performing the song, while children dressed as Cupid shoot passers-by to make them fall in love.

Very good Sleeper - Inbetweener was blocked from # 1 by Scarlet and Ace Of Base. :(

04.02.1995 : Ace Of Base - Living In Danger (1 week # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/96/Ace_of_Base_-_Living_in_Danger.jpg

"Living In Danger" is the title of a song recorded by Swedish group Ace of Base. It was released as the seventh and final single from their debut album "Happy Nation".

Maybe it was a main reason for not very good results in music charts. Single reached number 18 on UK Singles Chart, and it peaked at number 20 on Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. in 1994.

The music video of "Living in Danger" opens with the four members of Ace of Base singing at different places on an underground metro station. Then we see 3 people, two men and a woman, rushing into the underground station. We also see a woman sitting in a ticket office watching the busy people. She feels that no one really sees her in the officebox. On a train a woman believes that a strange man with sunglasses is following her. That is the same man that arrived at the station earlier. The woman is getting scared and she tries to getaway from this stranger on the train. She runs off the train and then in her haste, she falls over behind the ticket office. The woman in the officebox helps her and offers her some coffee. That stranger on the train is a former pilot. We now see some old flashbacks from a war somewhere, where he in a plane was attacked and had to escape using a parachute. In this war he also met a priest and on the train he happens to meet this priest again and they start talking. At the end of the video we see Joker and Buddha leaving the metro station together. Linn and Jenny are standing together on the metro.

25.03.1995 : Go-Go's - The Whole World Lost It's Head (2 weeks # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8f/Wwhlih.jpg

The Go-Go’s are an all-female American rock band formed in 1978. They made history as the first all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts.

The Go-Go's rose to fame during the early 1980s. Their debut album "Beauty and the Beat" is considered one of the "cornerstone albums of (US) new wave" (Allmusic), breaking barriers and paving the way for a host of other new American acts. When the album was released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately reaching number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The LP sold in excess of three million copies and reached triple platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums ever.

In 1994 the Go-Go's classic line-up (Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin) got together again to release the 2-disc retrospective. "The Whole World Lost Its Head" is one of three new songs from all-female pop rock/New Wave band The Go-Go's 2-disc retrospective "Return to the Valley of The Go-Go's". The single only 'bubbled under' on the US charts at #108, but became the band's first and only Top 40 hit in the UK, peaking at #29.

15.04.1995 : Sleeper - Vegas (1 week # 1)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/entertainment/images/music/louise2_large.jpg

Sleeper were a British Britpop band in the 1990s fronted by Louise Wener. The band had eight UK Top 40 hit singles and three UK Top 10 albums (Smart, The It Girl and Pleased to Meet You).

"Smart" was one of the first Britpop albums to hit the charts and won the band a BPI gold disc for sales of over 100,000 copies. It was followed by the platinum-selling release The It Girl which was arguably the band's finest moment and included "What Do I Do Now?", "Lie Detector", "Sale of the Century" and "Statuesque" as the defining tracks.

Sleeper recorded a cover of the Blondie song "Atomic", which was used in the film "Trainspotting', after Blondie refused to allow the use of the original version. Their track "Statuesque" also features in the movie during one of the bar scenes.

"Vegas" is the fourth and final single to be released from their debut album "Smart" in March 1994. The single peaked at #33 on UK Singles Chart.

22.04.1995 : Deuce - I Need You (5 weeks # 1)

http://lisamarksmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/deuce_ny.jpg

Deuce was the first group from the modern generation of British pop bands. A two male, two female quartet, they released four Top 30 singles in UK charts during 1995 and 1996, before splitting up in 1997.

The band was formed in 1994 by Tom Watkins (who had managed Pet Shop Boys) and Kelly O'Keefe who was doing work experience in his office. He admired her distinctive vocals, style and kitsch sensibility, and they decided to put together a boy/girl band with O'Keefe as lead vocalist. O'Keefe was a student of The BRIT School, studying music, and recruited her school friend Lisa Armstrong, a dancer. Watkins then discovered Craig Robert Young and Paul Holmes and the group were formed.

Their debut single, "Call It Love", entered the UK Singles Chart at number 21 on 21 January 1995 and climbed to a peak of number 11. The follow-up "I Need You" was entered into the UK's pre-selection show for the Eurovision Song Contest but came third. The single went straight to number 10 on release in April 1995.

This song should won Eurovision 1995 (not "Nocturne"), but British choose awful "Love City Groove". "I Need You" was fresh and catchy pop, especially in comparing with the most boring ESC songs in 90s decade. Maybe it was the safe bet for the win. :(

27.05.1995 : Scarlet - I Wanna Be Free (To Be With Him) (2 weeks # 1)

http://inspiracy.com/scarlet/discog/singles/lh1.jpg

"I Wanna Be Free (To Be With Him)" was their next single after successful "Independent Love Song" and became a minor hit in UK (# 21). Their second album "Chemistry" missed UK Albums Chart and it was after this relative failure that their record label WEA dropped the band and they went their separate ways.
