March 29, 201312 yr Author 26.04.1980 : Prima Donna - Love Enough For Two (4 weeks # 1) http://www.esceurovision.com/include/1/PrimaDonna-.jpg 43Hqtw1vFAQ "Love Enough for Two" was the British entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980, performed in English by Prima Donna. The song is uptempo and about the love between two people. Prima Donna were the United Kingdom representatives in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980. The group comprised sisters Kate Robbins and Jane Robbins, Sally Ann Triplett, Danny Finn, Alan Coates and Lance Aston (brother of Jay Aston, who performed with Bucks Fizz, the following year's contest winners, who went on to enjoy a string of major hits). Finn was a former member of The New Seekers and was married to fellow ex-Seeker Eve Graham. He later retired from music to work for a iamspamspamamidesign company, reverting to his original name, Kevin. Robbins later had a successful career as a comedienne, impressionist and actress. Prima Donna performed the song "Love Enough for Two" which finished in third place, with 106 points. The song was written and composed by Stephanie de Sykes and Stuart Slater. It was their second entry to reach the Eurovision final, having also composed "The Bad Old Days" in 1978 for Co-Co. Their journey to the Eurovision Song Contest final in The Hague was not straightforward. They only won the UK heat A Song For Europe after a countback after the initial regional voting had placed them joint first with Maggie Moone. In an unrehearsed panic, host Terry Wogan asked each of the fourteen regional juries to cast a single vote for which of the songs they preferred. Some juries voted against the way they had earlier in the show and with the scoreboard unable to keep up, the entire process descended into farce. Regardless, Prima Donna were declared the winners and went forward to Eurovision. Author and historian John Kennedy O'Connor notes in his The Eurovision Song Contest - The Official History that Triplett is one of only four singers to have sung for the United Kingdom in the competition twice, alongside Ronnie Carroll, Cliff Richard and Cheryl Baker of Bucks Fizz. O'Connor also noted that this was the first UK entry, since 1964, not to make the UK Singles Chart prior to the Eurovision final, eventually peaking there at #48. Triplett returned to Eurovision in 1982, as one half of the group Bardo. Aston tried again to reach the Eurovision final, performing with another ex-New Seeker Kathryn Ann Rae, in the 1983 A Song For Europe contest, as part of the group Audio. They finished fourth of the eight shortlisted entries with the song "Love On Your Mind", written by Trevor Spencer and Marty Kristian, another New Seeker. Jane Robbins', sister, Emma Robbins, also had another attempt at the UK Eurovision ticket, in 1989 as part of female quartet The Pearls. They were also placed fourth of eight entries in the contest with the song "Love Come Down". Edited September 10, 201410 yr by R.I.P. Alex

Today the album is virtually impossible to get hold of and is considered to be the 'holy grail' among fans. The album featured the singles "Honey Don't Throw Our Love Away" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow", which were the first two singles released on Hiller's Dazzle label following their departure from Pye Records at the end of 1979. Track "Sugar Mouse" was released as a single in the Netherlands. Also included on the album was a cover version of the song "You're the Greatest Lover", which had been a million-seller in Europe for the Dutch group Luv', but was unknown in United Kingdom. 12th # 1 single for Brotherhood Of Man in my retrospective, but wasn't represented in official UK Singles Chart. The song is performed by Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John. Newton-John sings the primary vocals, with ELO (Jeff Lynne) adding "parenthetic" vocals in the style of their other songs on the "Xanadu" soundtrack, along with providing the instrumentation. A rare collaboration for ELO, the single reached no.1 in several countries and was the band's only UK number 1 single when it peaked there for two weeks in July 1980. The song peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. This was the first song beginning with the letter 'X' to ever chart on the Billboard Hot 100 and it remained the only one until 2010's "X" by Xzibit. Edited September 10, 201410 yr by R.I.P. Alex

The Mo-dettes' best known song is "White Mice", written by Jane Crockford, which was self-released as their first single in mid-1979 on Mode records, with "Masochistic Opposite" on the B-side. The single was distributed by Rough Trade. It spent five weeks at No. 1 on the indie chart. The Mo-dettes got further exposure on BBC Radio 1, DJ John Peel's show on 28 January 1980, broadcasting versions of "Norman (He's No Rebel)", "Dark Park Creeping", "Kray Twins" and "Bitter Truth". Further sessions followed on 26 August 1980 and 11 July 1981. They released one album "The Story So Far" in November 1980. The album chiefly consisted of pop-punk originals, as well as covers of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It, Black" and Édith Piaf's "Milord". Also in 1981, billed as the Bomberettes, they provided backing vocals on the track "Fighter Pilot" on John Cale's album Honi Soit. Another claim to fame was being introduced to Prince Charles while both were visiting London's Capital Radio. The final vinyl installment from the band was "Tonight", released in June 1981. Two months later, at the request of the Decca Records, who wanted to hear a fuller sound, The Mo-dettes asked guitarist Melissa Ritter to join. She played her first show as a Mo-dette just four days after joining the band. In February 1982, Ramona left and June sang for a couple of months. In May 1982, Sue Slack replaced Ramona on vocals, before the Mo-dettes disbanded permanently on 11 November 1982. Bassist Jane Crockford was married in 1980 to Daniel Woodgate of the ska band Madness. The marriage lasted for fifteen years. June Miles-Kingston re-emerged in the late 1980s as the drummer for The Communards; she also worked with Fun Boy Three, Thompson Twins, and Everything but the Girl. Miles-Kingston is the sister of the former Tenpole Tudor guitarist Bob Kingston. Edited September 10, 201410 yr by R.I.P. Alex

April 5, 201312 yr Author 06.09.1980 : Abba - The Winner Takes It All (5 weeks # 1) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/a/a9/ABBA_-_The_Winner_Takes_It_All_(swedish_edition).jpg 92cwKCU8Z5c "The Winner Takes It All", original demo title "The Story of My Life", was written by both Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, with Agnetha Fältskog singing the lead vocal. The lyrics to the song were thought to mirror the divorce between Ulvaeus and Fältskog in 1979, similar to the 1981 song "When All Is Said and Done", in which Ulvaeus deals with the divorce between Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson in 1981. Ulvaeus denies the song is about his and Fältskog's divorce, saying the basis of the song "is the experience of a divorce, but it's fiction. There wasn't a winner or a loser in our case. A lot of people think it's straight out of reality, but it's not". American critic Chuck Klosterman, who says "The Winner Takes It All" is "[the only] pop song that examines the self-aware guilt one feels when talking to a person who has humanely obliterated your heart" finds Ulvaeus' denial hard to believe in light of the original title. Fältskog has also repeatedly stated that though this song is her favorite ABBA song and that it has an excellent set of lyrics, the story is not that of her and Ulvaeus: she was no loser in their divorce. Ulvaeus also wrote the lyrics for Fältskog's 1979 live number 'I'm Still Alive'. In a 1999 poll for Channel Five, "The Winner Takes It All" was voted Britain's favourite ABBA song. This feat was replicated in a 2010 poll for ITV. In a 2006 poll for a Channel Five programme, "The Winner Takes It All" was voted "Britain's Favourite Break-Up Song." "The Winner Takes It All" was yet another major success for ABBA. It hit #1 in Belgium, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands, and South Africa. It reached the Top 5 in Austria, Finland, France, West Germany, Norway and Switzerland, while peaking in the Top 10 in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and United States, ABBA's 4th and last American Top 10 hit. It was also the group's second Billboard AC No. 1 (after "Fernando").

The song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. After the success enjoyed by Bee Gees in the late 1970s, the band was asked to participate in musical endeavors for other artists, and Streisand asked Barry Gibb to write an album for her. This album ultimately became Guilty. "Woman in Love", as the lead single, became one of the most successful songs of Streisand's music career. It spent a total of three weeks at the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Streisand's fifth (and last to date) number one on this chart. It also spent five weeks atop the adult contemporary chart, her sixth number one on that tally. The song also proved very popular internationally, reaching number one in many countries, including United Kingdom. Edited September 10, 201410 yr by R.I.P. Alex
April 5, 201312 yr Author 11.10.1980 : Nolans - Got To Pull Myself Together (2 weeks # 1) http://991.com/newgallery/The-Nolans-Gotta-Pull-Myself-566424.jpg XLcZ_wtzoSs The Nolans are an Anglo-Irish girl group consisting of a group of sisters. The group, best known for their song "I'm in the Mood for Dancing", gained prominence as guest performers on numerous television shows in United Kingdom. The majority of their charted singles and albums occurred in the early 1980s but they continued to be active until 2005 and were particularly successful in Japan. Their chart breakthrough came in 1978 with the covers album "20 Giant Hits" on Target, which reached Number 3 in UK. That year they also supported Engelbert Humperdinck on a US tour. In 1979, the group participated in the UK Eurovision selection contest "A Song For Europe". Their track "Harry My Honolulu Lover" was considered the favourite before the contest, but ultimately placed fourth, with Black Lace going on to represent United Kingdom. A lightning strike by BBC technicians minutes before the broadcast led to the cancellation of the show. Instead, the regional juries had to make their decisions based on audio tapes of the songs. The group had been booked to promote the song on many BBC shows, leading to speculation that it had been taken for granted they would win the competition. One booking was representing the BBC at the 25th Anniversary celebrations for the Eurovision network, which was staged in Montreaux, Switzerland, in April 1979. After signing with CBS subsidiary Epic Records in 1979, the group enjoyed their greatest period of commercial success. Although their debut release - the failed UK Eurovision entry "Harry, My Honolulu Lover" - did not chart, their second Epic single "Spirit, Body and Soul" reached number 34. At the end of 1979, the group released the disco-flavoured single "I'm In the Mood for Dancing", which became their best-known tune and biggest hit. It reached number 3 in the UK, number 2 in their native Ireland and number 1 in Japan, a rare event for a Western act; the single eventually sold more than 600,000 copies in Japan. The song, like the majority of Nolans' hit singles, was written by Ben Findon, Mike Myers and Robert Puzey. The self-titled album Nolan Sisters, which featured the first two charting Epic singles, eventually reached Nº15 in the UK. In early 1980, the group changed its name from Nolan Sisters to Nolans. Following her marriage, Anne temporarily left the group and Coleen, who had released one solo single on Target in 1978, a song about Prince Andrew's status as a teen idol, became an official member. The group's 1980 album Making Waves peaked at number 11 but had the longest UK album chart run of their career (33 weeks). Singles from the album included "Don't Make Waves" (UK # 12, Ireland # 5); "Who's Gonna Rock You" (UK # 12 in 1980, Ireland # 14), and "Gotta Pull Myself Together" (UK # 9, Ireland # 8) Edited September 10, 201410 yr by R.I.P. Carter's acting career took off when she landed the starring role in The New Adventures of Wonder Woman as Wonder Woman and her alter ego Diana Prince. The savings her parents had set aside for her to pursue acting in Los Angeles were almost depleted, and Carter was close to returning to Arizona when her manager informed her that she had won the part. Her earnest performance endeared her to fans and critics, and the series lasted three seasons. She is the physical embodiment of the character so much so that thirty years after first taking on the role, Carter continues to be closely identified with Wonder Woman. Portrait is the first album by the American actress Lynda Carter. It was released in 1978 on vinyl LP, 8-track and cassette as well as a limited edition picture LP. Carter co-wrote three of the songs: "Want to Get Beside You," "Fantasy Man" and "Toto (Don't It Feel Like Paradise)". The album also included the cover songs "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel and "Just One Look" by Doris Troy. Promotional singles were released for "All Night Song" and "Toto (Don't It Feel Like Paradise)." Two of the songs were featured in and performed by Carter's character in the 1979 Wonder Woman episode, "Amazon Hot Wax": "Want to Get Beside You" and "Toto (Don't It Feel Like Paradise)". The latter song makes mention of several elements from the Wizard of Oz stories, and quotes dialogue from the 1939 film. Carter did not release another album for over 30 years. The song peaked at number two in the United Kingdom. An instant success, it scaled the Top 5 in other countries such as Germany, France and Australia. Although it achieved only moderate success in the US, peaking at number 25 when released in 1982, it is often regarded today as Wilde's signature song. In the summer of 1981, the track appeared on Wilde's self-titled debut album. The New Wave song was the start of Wilde's career. Her father and brother continued to write songs for her (with the latter also given production credits), although in later years Wilde herself and her brother would usually be credited with the songwriting.
April 10, 201312 yr Author 28.03.1981 : Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up (5 weeks # 1) http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh141/dirkdesaffel/album%202/2239.jpg pACePi441ds "Making Your Mind Up" is a song by British pop group Bucks Fizz. It was the winner of the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest and a UK Number-one single. Released in March 1981, it was Bucks Fizz's debut single, the group having been formed just two months earlier. From 2004 to 2007 the BBC used the name "Making Your Mind Up" for their Eurovision selection show in honour of the song. On 11 March 1981, Bucks Fizz performed "Making Your Mind Up" at the Song for Europe finals and despite being up against favourites and current chart group Liquid Gold, won the contest with ease. From this point, the group undertook much promotion of the song around the UK, including an appearance on Top of the Pops, whereby the single entered the UK charts at 24. It rose to No.5 the following week. A promotional video was filmed by the BBC for the Eurovision previews as they had done in previous years. The video depicts the group walking around Harrods department store in London. In line with other previous preview videos, the group do not lipsynch any of the words. This video has never been released on any official Bucks Fizz video or DVD releases, in its place is the group's first appearance on Top of the Pops. On 4 April the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest was staged in Dublin. In a close contest throughout the voting procedure, "Making Your Mind Up" managed to secure a victory with 136 points, beating second-placed Germany by a small margin of four. The song is held in affectionate regard by many Eurovision fans, and is generally considered to be a good example of a pop song from the Contest. Reaction was less favourable to the group's performance of the song, which was considered to be off-key, and led to much criticism that the members were chosen more for appearance than vocal ability. In addition, the performance is remembered for the point at which the two male members of the group removed the skirts of the two female members – only to reveal shorter skirts beneath them. Member Cheryl Baker has since commented on their poor performance stating that she sang the song in a higher key to the rest of the group due to nerves. Mike Nolan has said that on the night the microphones got mixed up, with Baker and Jay Aston singing on the lead microphones which had a higher volume. "Making Your Mind Up" went to No.1 in the UK following the victory and remained there for three weeks, becoming one of the biggest selling songs of the year. It also saw the group in high demand throughout Europe, with the single hitting No.1 in many countries and charting in the top ten in Australia. The record eventually sold four million copies worldwide. The single began a run of 20 UK hits for Bucks Fizz and was quickly followed up by "Piece of the Action" and debut album, Bucks Fizz. At the end of the decade, "Making Your Mind Up" was No.47 in the UK top selling singles of the 1980s. Despite the success of the song, fans of the group don't consider it to be a good representation of their work, while member Cheryl Baker doesn't rate it as one of their best songs. Arnold, Olivia Newton-John, The Pretenders, Dusty Springfield, Mary Mason, Melba Montgomery, and Billie Davis. The highest-charting and best-selling version in the United States was recorded and released in 1981 by country-rock singer Juice Newton for her album Juice, released on Capitol Records. Newton remade the song at the suggestion of Steve Meyer who promoted Capitol Records product to radio stations and felt "Angel of the Morning" would be a strong candidate to attain airplay for Newton. Newton's version reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, #22 on the Billboard country music chart, and spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart in April of that year. The recording also earned Newton a Grammy nomination in the same category as Rush's 1968 hit. More than 1 million units of Newton's single of the song were sold in the United States, and the single reached the top ten in a number of other countries, including Canada and Australia. In the UK, this recording reached #43 on the UK Singles Chart, marking the song's third appearance on that chart without becoming a truly major hit. Newton recorded the song again in 1998 for her "The Trouble with Angels" album. Edited April 17, 201312 yr by AlexRange

Robbins is a first cousin once removed of Paul McCartney and older sister of fellow actress Amy Robbins (her mother and McCartney were first cousins). She attended Wirral Grammar School for Girls and won the Drama Prizes each year, notably with her monologue "All this glitters is not gold". Her first released recording, in 1978, was of the song "Tomorrow", owned by McCartney's music publishing company, from the musical Annie. Robbins first came to prominence whilst representing the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 1980 as part of the group Prima Donna. They finished third. The following year, Robbins joined the cast of the ITV soap opera Crossroads, playing the part of a pop singer who was recording a single in the fictional motel's basement recording studio. The song, "More Than In Love", was released commercially in the UK (credited as Kate Robbins and Beyond) and gave Robbins a major hit single, reaching number 2 in the UK Singles Chart. It was her only hit. The backing group Beyond had taken part in the UK's Song for Europe contest earlier in the year, losing to Bucks Fizz. Robbins wrote the first theme tune to Surprise, Surprise and provided almost all of the female voices on the television show Spitting Image in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
