The song was recorded that same year with the same English lyrics by Italian singer Raf, who co-wrote the song with Giancarlo Bigazzi and Steve Piccolo. Branigan's version first hit #1 in Germany on June 15, 1984. Raf's version first hit #1 in Italy on June 23, 1984. Branigan's version was the most popular song across Europe during much of the summer of 1984 and was the song of the year in Switzerland. Branigan's version peaked at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Self Control" afforded Laura Branigan a #1 hit in Austria, Sweden and South Africa and was also a smash hit for Branigan in Norway (#3), Ireland (#3), Australia (#3) and the UK (#5). Branigan's album Self Control went Silver, Gold or Platinum in several countries and yielded subsequent charting singles, though not of the title track's magnitude, in "The Lucky One", "Ti Amo" and "Satisfaction". The music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Don Black. A single was released by Sarah Brightman. Originally released by Marti Webb and Justin Hayward as a duet in 1981 the song had new lyrics penned for the original 1982 production of the show and was re-titled "When You Want to Fall in Love". The original lyrics were re-instated when the show was re-written for Brightman's run. It was later used in Lloyd Webber's and Black's reworking of the show, returning to the original album title of Tell Me on a Sunday. The single peaked at #76 on the UK Singles Chart. The song's melody was originally heard as Variation 5 on Lloyd Webber's 1978 instrumental album Variations. The remainder of the album became the dance music for the second act of Song & Dance. May 23, 201312 yr Author 29.09.1984 : Frida - Shine (1 week # 1) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RtMJ-VAHcnQ/TDP9LnHhYDI/AAAAAAAAA0M/_LxJjWdXWXo/s1600/FRIDA22.JPG TM4mCR0-WIY "Shine" is the name of Anni-Frid Lyngstad's second post-ABBA solo album. It was first released in September 1984 and has since been re-released several times, mainly in the digitally remastered form in 2005 with bonus tracks. Shine is included in The Frida Boxset. The promotion videos and clips from this album are included in the 31⁄2 hour documentary Frida the dvd. Shine was the follow-up to Frida's 1982 album "Something's Going On". Recording began on February 1, 1984, in Paris, France. Producer was the only 29 years old Steve Lillywhite, at this early age, already known for his work with Peter Gabriel, Rolling Stones and U2 amongst others. The lead single from the album was the titletrack, "Shine" (# 82 in UK Singles Chart). In some countries "Twist In The Dark" and "Heart Of The Country" were released as singles. "Shine" reached the Top 10 on the album charts in Sweden, Norway and Belgium, and the Top 20 in Netherlands. At the time of recording both Something's Going On and Shine, Lyngstad wanted to distance herself from the "typical ABBA pop-sound" and try new directions. Lillywhite managed to give Lyngstad an even more modern and complex soundscape than Phil Collins had done on her previous album. In Frida - The DVD, when speaking about Shine and its failure to recreate the success of its predecessor, Lyngstad herself says "that maybe this album became a bit too modern for its time". Shine features songwriting contributions from musicians such as the late Kirsty MacColl, Simon Climie — of Climie Fisher fame, and Pete Glenister - Alison Moyet's co-writer and producer. The Shine album is also unique because it saw the debut of Lyngstad as a songwriter in both "Don't Do It" and "That's Tough", the latter also features her son Hans Fredriksson as co-writer. (Frida also wrote "I Don't Wanna Be Alone," during this period). The track "Slowly" was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA. This song is also the last song written by the ABBA-composers to be recorded by either of ABBA's female vocalists to date. "Shine" has never been officially released in the United States, but was issued in Canada by WEA. Phil Collins was to produce again, but as Genesis formed part of his other commitments, producer Steve Lillywhite took over his role. Also it was Lyngstad's last English language studio album to date. Edited May 23, 201312 yr by AlexRange

It was a moderate-sized hit in the United States reaching number 13 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The single became Branigan's fifth US Top 20 hit in Hot 100. Top 30 single in Switzerland, Ireland, France, # 56 in United Kingdom. Branigan's performance of "The Lucky One" won the Grand Prix award at the Tokyo Music Festival held April 1 1984; the prize was three million yen ($13,400). As with "Self Control" an elaborate video was prepared to promote "The Lucky One" although the video for the latter is contrastingly light-hearted, with Branigan portraying a gas station attendant who dreams she's brought to a lavish country manor where she receives instruction in how to display a polished deportment. It was written by Jules Shear for his album "Watch Dog", as a mid-tempo folk-rock song. After The Cars recorded their own version, which they did not use on any of their albums, Lauper decided to cover it. Although she initially intended to do a straight cover of Shear's version, she turned it into a pop ballad instead. The song was the only single released worldwide by Lauper that did not have a music video. It peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lauper's fourth top five single in the U.S. Lauper became the first woman in the 26-year history of Billboard to take four singles from the same album to Top 5 on the Hot 100. In the United Kingdom the song did not perform as well as Lauper's previous releases. It debuted at number eighty-two on the UK Singles Chart in November 1984, peaking at number sixty-four, staying only six weeks on the chart. The single performed similarly throughout the rest of Europe, peaking at number 16 in Switzerland, and at number 35 in Germany. It was more successful in Austria, where it peaked at number five, becoming her fourth consecutive top five in the country. Edited May 24, 201312 yr by AlexRange
May 24, 201312 yr Author 17.11.1984 : Madonna - Like A Virgin (5 weeks # 1) http://www.wedding-resourceblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/madonna.jpg 1BDJt30FmzI "Like a Virgin" is a song by American singer Madonna from her second album of the same name. It was released on November 6, 1984 by Sire Records, as the first single from the album. The song appears on the greatest hits compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990) and Celebration (2009). It was written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly and produced by Nile Rodgers; Steinberg said that the song was inspired by his personal experiences of romance. It was chosen for Madonna by Michael Ostin of Warner Bros. Records after listening to a demo sung by Kelly. However, Rodgers initially felt that the song did not have a good enough hook and was not suitable for Madonna, but subsequently changed his opinion after the hook was stuck in his mind. Musically "Like a Virgin" is a dance-oriented song, composed of two hooks. Madonna's voice is heard in a high register while a continuous arrangement of drums are heard along the bassline. The lyrics of the song are ambiguous and consist of hidden innuendo. In sexual terms, the lyrics can be interpreted in different ways for different people. "Like a Virgin" received positive reviews from contemporary as well as old critics, who frequently called it as one of the defining songs for Madonna. It became her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The song debuted on the UK Singles Chart on November 17, 1984 at number 51, and peaked at number three on January 12, 1985; it spent a total of 18 weeks in the chart and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipment of 500,000 copies across United Kingdom. According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 780,000 copies there. Across Europe, the song peaked within the top-ten of the charts of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. "Like a Virgin" became Madonna's first number-one song on the Australian Kent Music Report chart and on the Japanese International Singles Chart. It peaked at number-two on the New Zealand Singles Chart and # 15 on the Swedish charts. "Like A Virgin" in my second favourite Madonna song. Edited May 24, 201312 yr by AlexRange

A single, "The Greatest Gift of All" (#53 Country, #81 Pop, and #40 Adult Contemporary) was released from the album. In the United Kingdom "Christmas Without You" was issued as the single with (Peak position : # 88). This album became one of the biggest Christmas albums of the 1980s and still sells today, with "A Christmas to Remember" played by U.S. radio stations and satellite radio during the Christmas holiday season. In 1989 it was certified Double Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
May 24, 201312 yr Author 29.12.1984 : Bucks Fizz - I Hear Talk (2 weeks # 1) http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51sW9oDT3JL._SL500_AA280_.jpg 1dZnWPYXd_s "I Hear Talk" is a 1984 single by UK pop group Bucks Fizz. It was written by Andy Hill and Peter Sinfield - the team responsible for the group's biggest hit in the UK, "The Land of Make Believe". It was also produced by Hill. Released as a single in December 1984, it is the title track from the group's fourth studio album. Released on 15 December 1984, the single coincided with a much-publicised coach crash the group experienced earlier in the week. While the group were returning from a gig in Newcastle, their tour bus collided with road works and careened off the road and injured the members of the group as well their entourage. Member Mike Nolan was badly injured and the group were inactive for several months. As a result of this, promotion for the single was minimal and the song failed to chart as highly as had been expected, reaching No.34 in the UK Charts, despite it being seen as one of their strongest ever songs by fans. Reviewing the single for Number One magazine, pop group Bananarama made positive comments about the song, saying that it had "something that their last few singles didn't". Member Cheryl Baker has also commented that it is one of her favourite Bucks Fizz songs. The group had completed a promotional video (my favourite Bucks Fizz video) for the song before the accident, which was studio-bound and depicted the group walking around in a snowy location. Later, the group are seen performing the song against a black background. Bucks Fizz had also recorded a performance of the song for TV show Razzamatazz on 11 December, the day of the coach crash, which was transmitted some weeks later. The single entered the charts in the last week of 1984, and rose to No.34 in January 1985. The single stayed at that position for three consecutive weeks, but failed to climb further. The second of these weeks saw TV show Top of the Pops feature a clip of the video in its "breakers" section - which was the first-ever edition of this section, which ran for many years afterwards. In this duet, two women – Svetlana, the Russian chess champion's estranged wife, and Florence, his mistress – express their bittersweet feelings for him and at seeing their relationships fall apart. The duet was number one in the UK for four weeks in 1985 when released as a single by Elaine Paige (as Florence) and Barbara Dickson (as Svetlana), who laid down their vocals separately and never met during the recording of the song, only for the video and subsequent performances on Top of the Pops and the European tours. This recording remains in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest selling UK Chart single ever by a female duo. Paige also appeared in the original London West End stage production of Chess. In the United Kingdom on 18 September 2004, the BBC's All-Time Greatest Love Songs (hosted by Lionel Richie) saw the duet performed live by Paige and Dickson, together for the first time in 20 years, to a rapturous reception. Paige played her solo demo recording of the song on her BBC Radio 2 show, Elaine Paige on Sunday. It became a hit single when covered by Kirsty MacColl the next year. The opening lines of the song ("I was 21 years when I wrote this song/I'm 22 now, but I won't be for long") are identical to the opening lines of Paul Simon's song "Leaves that are Green," which appears on Simon and Garfunkel's 1966 album "Sounds of Silence". Kirsty MacColl recorded the song the year after its release by Bragg, produced by her then-husband Steve Lillywhite. It was her biggest solo hit - reaching number 7 in the UK Singles Chart and number 8 in the Irish Singles Chart. Bragg's original version of the song had only two verses. MacColl thought the song was too short, and so Bragg wrote a further two verses for her, which she consolidated into one. Since MacColl's death, Bragg has included the additional verse in performances of the song as a tribute. Edited May 26, 201312 yr by AlexRange

The lyrics identify with materialism, with Madonna asking for a rich and affluent life, rather than romance and relationships. Contemporary and old critics have frequently noted "Material Girl" and "Like a Virgin" as the songs that made Madonna an icon. "Material Girl" was a commercial success, reaching the top-five in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Japan and United Kingdom. It reached the position two of the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, becoming her third top-five single there. The music video was a mimicry of Marilyn Monroe's performance of the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" from the 1953 film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes". The mimicked scenes are interspersed with scenes of a Hollywood director trying to win the heart of an actress, played by Madonna herself. Discovering that, contrary to her song, the young woman was not impressed by money and expensive gifts, he pretended to be penniless and succeeded in taking her out on a date. She has performed the song in four of her world tours, most of them being mimicry of the song and the video. In Australia, the song reached the top five and peaked at four. In the United Kingdom, "Material Girl" debuted on the UK Singles Chart at position 24 on March 2, 1985 and reached a peak of three. It was present for a total of ten weeks on the chart. The song was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry, for shipment of 200,000 copies of the song. According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 405,000 copies there. Across Europe, the song reached the top-ten in Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Spain; while reaching the top 40 of Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The first female soloist to compete for UK at Eurovision since Olivia Newton-John with "Long Live Love" at Eurovision 1974 and also the first female composer of a UK Eurovision entrant to sing her composition in the contest, Vikki won the right to perform at Gothenburg by winning the UK national final, A Song for Europe, where she was the first singer to perform. The song was a contemporary ballad about a man and a woman who are both too afraid to plunge head-first with their emotions into a love affair; while both of them want to be loved by the other, both of them are letting their heads rule their hearts. In the chorus, Vikki sings that "love is" the product of a number of impulsive decisions, such as "taking a chance on two hearts beating as one." Vikki nominally used a single chair as a prop, first sitting in it while singing the song, then circling it and abandoning it entirely by the second half of the song. Despite the high showing at Gothenburg, the song placed at #49 on the UK Singles Chart. The B-Side of the Single was "Lead Me Through the Darkness". Now Vikki is best known as her mononym Aeone is a British composer, who now lives in Los Angeles, California. Her music has been classified as new age, folk or world music. She has released four albums, one of which was an internet only release. She now works extensively in film and tv and has over 60 movie trailers to her credit. Edited May 28, 201312 yr by AlexRange

It has something of a controversial reputation as it represented a departure from her previous works, which tended toward thematic albums written almost in their entirety by Willcox and long-standing band members such as Joel Bogen and Phil Spalding. As an attempt to make a more "polished" pop album and (supposedly) to break into the U.S. market, a lot of artistic control was ceded to the producers leading to an unprecedented four cover versions from the original CD's 12 tracks. The lead single "Don't Fall in Love (I Said)" was a hit in the UK, reaching the top 30, as did the album, but follow-up releases "Soul Passing Through Soul" and "World in Action" were less successful.
