01.06.1985 : Strawberry Switchblade - Who Knows What Love Is (1 week # 1)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_04gtqeypiSo/SzAY3mEVFUI/AAAAAAAACPQ/FXr2h6N9L1o/s400/strawberry_switchblade8.jpg

Strawberry Switchblade was a female pop rock/New Wave band formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1981 by Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall.

The band's first single, "Trees and Flowers", was released in July 1983 through 92 Happy Customers, an independent record label run by Will Sergeant from Echo & The Bunnymen, and sold over 10,000 copies. It was featured at number 47 in John Peel's 1983 Festive 50. "Trees and Flowers" was written by Bryson about her medical condition agoraphobia.

In late 1984 their second single, "Since Yesterday", was released. Having been given a large marketing push over the festive period, it became a UK top ten hit in early 1985, peaking at number 5, and also met with success in Europe and Japan.

However, they attained little more than the unenviable title of one-hit wonders, when all subsequent releases to "Since Yesterday" failed to reach the Top 50 in the UK Singles Chart. In March 1985 they released their next single, "Let Her Go", a tune in a similar vein to "Since Yesterday".

Following the release of their eponymous album in April, in May 1985 they released a further single, the ballad "Who Knows What Love Is" (UK # 84), one of two tracks on the album produced by Phil Thornalley of The Cure.

08.06.1985 : Madonna - Crazy For You (3 weeks # 1)

http://cdn.stereogum.com/files/2007/02/065-Madonna-Crazy-For-You.jpg

"Crazy for You" is a song by American recording artist Madonna for the 1985 film Vision Quest. It was released on March 2, 1985, by Geffen Records as the first single from the soundtrack album of the film, and later included on the ballads compilation Something to Remember (1995)

In the United States, "Crazy for You" became Madonna's second number-one single on the Bilboard Hot 100. "Crazy for You" reached number one in Australia and displaced another Madonna release, "Angel"/"Into the Groove", from the top spot on the Kent Music Report chart, making Madonna the first act in Australian chart history to replace herself at the number-one spot. After the song was released in the United Kingdom on June 8, 1985, it debuted at 25 and peaked at two. In February 1991, the song was re-released and again reached a peak of two. "Crazy for You" was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipment of 400,000 copies across United Kingdom. Such was Madonna's popularity that when Vision Quest was released in home video in the UK, it was renamed as Crazy for You, to cash in on her success. According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 670,000 copies there. "Crazy for You" was also a number-two hit in Ireland and New Zealand. The song reached the top 20 in Belgium, Europe, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland and top 40 of Austria, France and Germany.

03.08.1985 : Marti Webb - Ben (1 week # 1)

Marti Webb is a musical actress from England, who appeared on stage in "Evita", before starring in Andrew Lloyd Webber's one woman show "Tell Me" on a Sunday in 1980.

In 1985 she scored her next big hit when she recorded a cover version of Black's song, "Ben", which had been originally released by Michael Jackson. It was produced in memory of Ben Hardwick, who died shortly after becoming Britain's youngest liver transplant patient and whose story was publicized on the BBC television programme That's Life!. The single reached #5 in the UK Singles Chart and was included on her 1985 album "Encore". The following year, Black wrote lyrics to the theme of the BBC television drama Howards' Way and the single "Always There" was the result, produced by its composers Simon May and Leslie Osbourne. It became a UK top 20 hit, and inspired an album of the same name in which she covered other television themes. The album, which peaked at #65 in the UK Albums Chart, was later released on compact disc entitled Marti Webb Sings Small Screen Themes.

10.08.1985 : Katrina And The Waves - Do You Want Crying (2 weeks # 1)

http://991.com/newGallery/Katrina--The-Waves-Do-You-Want-Cryin-92144.jpg

A follow-up single to "Walking on Sunshine" called "Do You Want Crying" also became a top 40 US hit, reaching No. 37 in the late summer of 1985.

However, the band's follow-up album to Katrina and the Waves (simply entitled Waves) didn't meet with the same measure of success, either critically or commercially. Rew wrote only two of the ten songs on the LP; de la Cruz and Leskanich each wrote four. Drummer Cooper, interviewed some years later, claimed "It was (a) mistake when we started taking over from Kimberley in the musical contribution side. The second Capitol album was awful...".

The album did spin off a minor UK and US hit in the form of the Rew-penned "Is That It?" (No. 70 US, No. 82 UK), and "Sun Street" was a UK Top 30 hit in 1986. However, Capitol dropped the band after the Waves album didn't perform to expectations.

The band subsequently recorded a 1989 album for Capitol-distributed SBK Records called Break of Hearts, a harder, more rock-oriented effort than their previous releases. The album included "That's the Way" which reached No. 16 in the US (credited to Leskanich/Rew), but subsequent singles, including "Rock 'n' Roll Girl", failed to chart, and the band once again were dropped from their label.

# 96 in UK Singles Chart.

"Spanish Eddie" was the lead single from Laura Branigan's fourth album, Hold Me. The single was produced by Jack White and arranged by Harold Faltermeyer. A moody black-and-white photo appeared on the picture sleeve and the single was promoted by a music video. Released in July 1985, the record became Branigan's sixth Top 40 hit in the U.S. in two and a half years, peaking at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #37 on the Cash Box singles chart.

Branigan's single fared better overseas. "Spanish Eddie" achieved Top Ten status in South Africa (#6) and Austria (#8), and was a sizable hit in Sweden (#11) while hitting the Top 40 in Australia (#24), Canada (#34) and Germany (#36). The song also charted in France (#73) and the UK (#87).

"Spanish Eddie" was also recorded by Tony Christie and rendered in German as "Die Nacht als der Himmel Feuer fing" by Wencke Myhre.

21.09.1985 : Madonna - Angel (3 weeks # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ru/6/61/Madonna-Angel.jpg

"Angel" was written by Madonna and Steve Bray and released worldwide on April 10, 1985. Madonna explained to Bray that she wanted a stronger, more pop-oriented album, hence the songs should reflect that. One of the first songs that they developed was "Angel". Madonna commented that the song was about a girl, who was "in depression over something. An angel appeared and healed her soul, making her fall madly in love with Him. [...] It's something that I felt when I was young. I thought it would make for an interesting story if I wrote that [experience] as a song on my record." The song was recorded as early as April 1984, but the whole project was held off, much to Madonna's frustration, by the continuing sales of her self-titled debut album, which had by then sold over a million copies in United States. She had decided to release "Angel" as the initial single from the album, but changed her mind, after the recording of the title track "Like a Virgin" was complete. "Angel" was ultimately released as the third single, and included the song "Into the Groove", from Madonna's 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, on the B-side of the 12-inch maxi-single.

Madonna had initially planned to release a music video for "Angel", but later decided to go against it, as at that time, there were already five Madonna music videos on-rotation in the music channels and were being broadcast continuously. Hence, Warner Bros. and Madonna felt that adding another video to the already saturated channels, might not be in her favour. A promotional video, containing scenes from the music videos of "Burning Up", "Borderline", "Lucky Star", "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl" was made by Warner Bros. Records and aired in the United Kingdom. The video was included on the promotional-only video compilations It's That Girl and She's Breathless.

After its release, "Angel" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at 48 on the issue dated April 27, 1985, while her previous single "Crazy for You" was at number-two on the chart. After ten weeks, "Angel" reached a peak position of five on the chart. The song tied Madonna with Olivia Newton-John, as the female artist with most top-five hits on the Hot 100 at that time.

The song was released in the United Kingdom with "Burning Up" as its B-Side, and debuted at ten on the UK Singles Chart on September 9, 1985. It reached a peak of five next week, and was present for a total of 12 weeks on the chart. The song was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for the shipment of 200,000 copies of the single across United Kingdom. According to The Official Charts Company, the song has sold 205,000 copies there. In Australia, "Angel" charted as a combined single with "Into the Groove" and reached the top of the Kent Music Report chart. It was the second highest selling single of 1985 in Australia. The song reached the top 20 in the charts of Belgium, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland.

I adore the song Everytime It Rains, thought the 100+ times I have listened to it, it has never occurred to me to see who wrote it - so had no idea it was Maria Vidal.

Body Rock is a great - probably one of my highlights from 1985.

26.10.1985 : Eighth Wonder - Stay With Me (5 weeks # 1)

http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3240/imnotscared.jpg

Eighth Wonder were a British pop band in the 1980s. They formed in 1983 and enjoyed major success in Japan and Italy between 1985 and 1987, before having hit singles in the UK and across Europe in 1988.

Eighth Wonder's roots start in a band called Spice. In 1983, Jamie Kensit auditioned his sister Patsy Kensit, then aged 14, for the vacant job of lead singer in his new band. She formed a line-up consisting of herself on vocals, Jamie Kensit and Geoff Beauchamp on guitar, Lawrence Lewis on bass, Jake Walters on drums and Nigel Davis on percussion. Spice made their live debut in autumn 1983, and then spent the next year playing further gigs to gain some attention from record labels.

In late 1984, Nigel Davis left to start the Band 'Slipstream' and Alex Godson a keyboard player, joined the band. They renamed themselves Eighth Wonder and Patsy Kensit began to write songs for the band. Their first gig as Eighth Wonder was in November 1984 in Wimbledon, London and further gigs followed. It was at one of these that Steve Wooley, co-owner of Palace Films, and director Julien Temple offered Patsy Kensit the role of 'Crepe Suzette' in their 1986 film, Absolute Beginners.

In April 1985 they were signed by CBS Records and began recording in London, working around Patsy Kensit's filming on Absolute Beginners. In October 1985, with the filming completed, Eighth Wonder's first single "Stay With Me" was released and achieved success in Japan and Italy reaching number one (it charted only at #65 in the UK Singles Chart).

07.12.1985 : Madonna - Dress You Up (5 weeks # 1)

http://www.madonnation.cz/virginlp/madonnamix_03.jpg

"Dress You Up" is a song by American singer Madonna. It was released as the final single from her second studio album, Like a Virgin, on July 24, 1985, by Sire Records. The song was the last track to be added to the album as it was submitted late by songwriters Andrea LaRusso and Peggy Stanziale. Madonna pushed for the song's inclusion on Like a Virgin as she particularly liked its lyrics. Musically, the song is a drum beat driven dance track featuring instrumentation from guitars and vocals from a choir. The lyrics are an extended metaphor for fashion and sex, comparing dressing up with passion. A live performance from Madonna's first tour was used as the music video.

Critics reacted positively to the dance-pop nature of the track. "Dress You Up" became Madonna's sixth consecutive top-five single in the United States.

In the United Kingdom, "Dress You Up" was released on December 12, 1985. It entered the UK Singles Chart at number 12, and reached a peak of five, being present on the chart for a total of 13 weeks. The song was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), for shipments of 200,000 copies. According to Official Charts Company, the song has sold 210,000 copies there. In Australia, the song peaked at five in October 1985, becoming Madonna's sixth top-ten single there. The song also reached the top 20 in Belgium, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, while peaking just outside the top 20 in Italy.

11.01.1986 : Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley - The Phantom of the Opera (5 weeks # 1)

http://theatre-musical.com/phantom/sarahbrightman7.jpg

"The Phantom of the Opera" is a song from the stage musical of the same name, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, sung by Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford, lyrics written by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe, and additional lyrics by Mike Batt.

The song is performed in Act I after the song "Angel of Music" (The Mirror) and before "The Music of the Night" (and is reprised in Act Two at the end of the song "Notes/Twisted Every Way"). It takes place as the Phantom escorts Christine by boat to his lair beneath the Opera Garnier. It is sung as a duet by Christine and the Phantom. In this song, Christine sings her highest note in the show, an E6, at the end of the song. In different shows, Sarah Brightman sings this song in different duets with other performers Steve Harley, Antonio Banderas, Chris Thompson, Alessandro Safina and Mario Frangoulis.

What makes this particular song unique within the musical is its unusual hard rock style, since most of the songs in the musical have a more operatic style. Early in the musical's production, Andrew Lloyd Webber met Jim Steinman, who described "The Phantom of the Opera" as a rock song invading an opera house. This is what inspired the hard rock style of the song, which influenced all of the rock-based instruments in the song including drums and electric guitar.

Peak position : # 7 in United Kingdom.

John, I was sure, that "I Know Him So Well" and maybe "A New England" were # 1s in your personal chart.

Must ask the question : Which Madonna songs were # 1s in your chart ?

In my charts most Madonna # 1 singles are from her 4 first albums (Madonna, Like A Virgin, True Blue, Like A Prayer)

Most my # 1 singles were not popular, I didn't heard these songs before my retro project.

"Manic Monday" is a song by the American pop rock band The Bangles, and the first single released from their second studio album "Different Light" (1986). It was written by Prince, using the pseudonym "Christopher". Originally intended for the group Apollonia 6 in 1984, he offered the song to The Bangles two years later. Lyrically it describes a woman who is waking up on Monday, wishing it was still Sunday.

In the United Kingdom "Manic Monday" debuted at number eighty-five on February 8, 1986, and entered the top forty, at number twenty-four, on February 22, 1986. The song eventually reached its peak position, at number two, the next month. In Germany, the single debuted at number twenty-nine on March 17, 1986, reaching the top ten in the next three weeks, and its peak, also at number two, on April 14, 1986, where it stayed two weeks. It remained in the top ten for four more weeks leaving the charts on July 20, 1986.

Hi Alex,

from memory, I think babs n elaine hit #3, Kirsty recently peaked at #3 (first time about #5) - they clashed with some all-time faves I think!

Madonna's had loads of number ones in my chart, some albums I like more than others (True Blue, Like A Prayer, Confessions On A dancefloor are my top choices):

Holiday, Papa Dont Preach, True Blue (I continue to be very annoyed she refuses to put the single version on hits albums), Open Your Heart, La Isla Bonita, Who's That Girl, Express Yourself, Dear Jessie, Deeper & Deeper, Vogue, Take A Bow, Rescue Me, 5 Minutes, Hung Up, & lots of others, but shockingly not the following that deserved to hit my top spot:

Into The Groove, Live To Tell, Like A Prayer, Ray Of Light, Frozen, Sorry, Beautiful Stranger! What!! They could all hit the top if qualify one day...

cheers

"Sex As a Weapon" would climb as high as Billboard #28 in January 1986, and "Le Bel Age" (#54) in February.

Second # 1 hit for Pat Benatar and # 67 in UK Singles Chart.
