In 1988 she was pronounced the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, with her song "Foolish Beat" and she remains the youngest female to write, record, and perform a No. 1 single. "We Could Be Together" is the ninth single from American singer-songwriter-actress Debbie Gibson, and the fourth from the album "Electric Youth" (1989). The catchy bubblegum pop number performed better overseas than at home, peaking at #22 in the United Kingdom but stalling at #59 in Australia and #71 on Billboard Hot 100 in United States. Some my very adorable all-time hits (For simple : "Shoes", "The Lands Of Make Believe", "Knowing Me, Knowing You", "You Gotta Be A Hustler" e.t.c), but some singles from 70s decade have very impressive results. Main reason : UK Singles chart was only top 50 in that time period. In late 80s even 4-5 weeks on the top is very successful result. Most # 1 singles in one calendar year : 4 : New Seekers (1973) 4 : Madonna (2 times - 1984, 1985) 4 : Samantha Fox (1987) 3 : Mary Hopkin (1970) 3 : Pickettywitch (1970) 3 : ABBA (1982) 3 : Kylie Minogue (1988) 3 : Belinda Carlisle (1988) 3 : Eighth Wonder (1988) Very deserved achievements. Madonna, Samantha Fox, New Seekers and Mary Hopkin were on the career peak in represented years. "The Visitors" era (even without non-UK single "When All Is Said and Done", which could be # 1) is the most successful ABBA period in this countdown. "Ring Ring" and "Arrival" are my favourite albums, but some best songs from these two albums weren't a singles (I Am Just A Girl, Disillusion, When I Kissed A Teacher) or non-UK singles (That's Me, Nina, Pretty Ballerina).

October 24, 201311 yr Author 16.09.1989 : Madonna - Cherish (3 weeks # 1) http://corteparacabelo.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/madonna-cabelo-oscuro.jpg 8q2WS6ahCnY "Cherish" was built around the themes of love and relationship, with William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet being one of the major inspirations. The track also included a line from the similarly titled song by the 1960s band The Association. Musically constructed as a doo-wop style pop song, "Cherish" is regarded as a light-hearted track by critics and includes instruments such as drum machine, percussions, keyboards and a saxophone. Lyrically it talks about Madonna's devotion to her lover, and her promise to be always by his side. "Cherish" was accompanied by a black-and-white music video that was directed by Herb Ritts. On September 1, 1989, "Cherish" was released in the United Kingdom and entered the UK Singles Chart at number 16. The next week, the song moved to its peak position of number three, becoming Madonna's 21st top ten single in the United Kingdom. It's 14th # 1 hit for Madonna in my retrospective. Now she has the same number of # 1 singles with ABBA. Less than 6 years were enough for this impressive achievement. ABBA got their 14 # 1 singles in 10 years period (from "Ring Ring" in 1973 to "Thank You For The Music" in 1983). Edited October 29, 201311 yr by AlexRange
October 24, 201311 yr Author interesting stats alex, lots of tracks I love in there and some unusual choices too B-) You certainly love Eurovision even more than me! Thanks, John. I really love old Eurovision (especially a period from 1965 to 1985). I have many additional Eurovision # 1s from these 2 decades, but they weren't realeased in United Kingdom and illegal for this thread. Some Irish pop gems are really missed ("Do I Dream", "Ceol An Ghra", "Horoscopes", "Wait Until The Weekend Comes"). The next ESC # 1 single will be Samantha Janus with "A Message To Your Heart" in 1991.

The group split in 1992 following the commercial failure of their final album "Galore". After 2 decades The Primitives also went back into the studio with original producer Paul Sampson, recording the EP "Never Kill A Secret", featuring two original songs - the title track and "Rattle My Cage" - and two cover versions of lesser-known female-fronted songs - "Need All the Help I Can Get" (written by Lee Hazlewood and originally recorded by Suzi Jane Hokum in 1966) and "Breakaway" (originally recorded by Toni Basil in 1966). The EP was released on 7 March 2011. Edited October 29, 201311 yr by AlexRange

The track was written and produced by former Thompson Twins members, Alannah Currie and Tom Bailey. It was one of the most successful singles released during Harry's solo career, peaking at number two in Australia, number 13 in the United Kingdom. The song is a combination of late eighties pop music fused with light rock. The campy style of the single pushed it to become one of Harry's most prolific releases. Although it wasn't a global hit, in the U.S. it managed to find success on radio stations, particularly college radio. Edited October 31, 201311 yr by AlexRange

The album included "That's the Way" which reached No. 16 in the US, but subsequent singles, including "Rock 'n' Roll Girl" (UK # 93), failed to chart, and the band once again were dropped from their label.

Both "In Private" and Springfield's previous single, "Nothing Has Been Proved" were produced by Pet Shop Boys, who helped return Springfield to prominence with their 1987 hit collaboration "What Have I Done to Deserve This?". Both Springfield singles were included on her 1990 British album "Reputation". "In Private" peaked at #14 in the British charts. Though not released as a single in the United States.
October 31, 201311 yr Author 16.12.1989 : Madonna - Dear Jessie (5 weeks # 1) http://www.dearjessie.co.uk/images/bootlegs/BootlegVirginTourLP.jpg EGYmN-1UQzI "Dear Jessie" is a song by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her fourth studio album, Like a Prayer. It was released as the fifth single from the album on December 10, 1989, by Sire Records. Written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, the song was inspired by Leonard's daughter Jessie. The release of "Dear Jessie" was limited to the United Kingdom, certain other European countries, Australia and Japan. The track is composed more like a children's lullaby rather than a pop song and features strings, synthesizer and strummed acoustics. A change in tempo occurs during the breakdown, where instrumentation from trumpets is included. Lyrically, the song evokes a psychedelic fantasy landscape, in which pink elephants roam with dancing moons and mermaids. The video is mainly animated and does not feature Madonna, except as the cartoon fairy Tinker Bell. Along with Hayes, there were six animators who worked on creating the fantasy imagery. It was included on the 1990 promotional-only video compilation "She's Breathless". The video opens with a shot of a little girl sleeping in her bed. As the music starts, rays of light emanate from the bedside radio with cartoon violins playing the music. The sun rises inside a picture on the wall and the girl wakes and starts playing with her doll. A fairy goes around tapping all her toys on the floor and a large, golden teapot comes alive and shoots a rainbow from its spout. A cartoon version of the girl then slides along the rainbow and, interpreting the lyrics of the song, catches a falling star and rides over the moon. By the second verse, pink elephants float over the girl's bed and an animated fairy version of Madonna emerges from the picture and winks. She takes the little girl through another picture, displaying mythological and fairytale beings such as dragons, princes and unicorns as well as a castle where Madonna dances with the moon. An underwater scene with mermaids and fish follows, then a parade of all the girl's toys around her room. As the song wraps, the fairy taps on the girl and causes her to yawn. She falls asleep again and her toys go back to being as they were. The violins and the instruments gradually fade inside the radio and the song ends. In United Kingdom, "Dear Jessie" debuted at number nine on the UK Singles Chart. After two weeks, it reached a peak position of number five on the chart, staying there for another two weeks and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for shipment of 200,000 copies of the single. The track was a moderate success commercially, reaching top 10 in Ireland and top 20 in Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

November 1, 201311 yr Author 23. Dusty Springfield - In Private (1 week # 1) Outstanding. Would have been a number 1 in 1989 for me, probably. I really like Pet Shop Boys music work with Eighth Wonder, Dusty Springfield and Liza Minnelli. "What Have I Done To Deserve This" spent 3 weeks on the top in 1987. In my opinion Pet Shop Boys is the second most signature pop group ever after ABBA.
