13.07.1991 : Voice Of The Beehive - Monsters And Angels (3 weeks # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/25781713/Monsters%20and%20Angels%20monstersangels.jpg

"Honey Lingers" was the second album from alternative rock band Voice of the Beehive. Released in 1991 on London Records, the album earned positive reviews from music critics and was a success on U.S. college radio stations.

The first single, "Monsters and Angels", became the band's first entry on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, at number eighty-two, and it also was the band's second top-twenty single in the UK Singles Chart (number seventeen), as well as their first (and only) top-ten single on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart, peaking at number eight. Honey Lingers also included a cover version of The Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You".

03.08.1991 : Sophie Lawrence - Love's Unkind (5 weeks # 1)

http://chartarchive.org/artwork/12033-300.jpg

Sophie Lawrence is an English actress, singer, director and choreographer. She played the role of Diane Butcher in the BBC soap opera "EastEnders" as a regular cast member from 1988 to 1991, making subsequent guest appearances in 1993, 1994, 1997, 2008 and 2012.

Lawrence initially quit her role in EastEnders to launch herself as a pop star. She enjoyed minor chart success in 1991, when her cover of Donna Summer's 1977 hit "Love's Unkind" (produced by Pete Hammond and Simon Cowell) reached #21 in the UK Singles Chart. Lawrence worked with the successful pop writers and producers, Stock Aitken and Waterman, recording a follow-up single, "Secrets", a track taken from Kylie Minogue's "Rhythm Of Love" album. However, the single was withdrawn before its release. Her pop career stalled and she returned to acting.

Primitives! The Beehives! The Darling Buds! All About Eve!

What on earth has happened!

1. My music taste is not so bad (especially for pop music lover) , as the most forum members think. John (popchartfreak) wrote about it many times before. You watched many classic pop songs on the top here, if regularly watched this thread.

2. I love Blondie and Debby Harry. Some groups (especially Darling Buds) create very same music and used the same successful combination with the beautiful female singer as main member and the voice of group.

3. These good indie pop (?), pop-rock (?) [not sure about their music genre] groups are very good choice for my # 1s , especially in the era of horrible dance music (watch Anthony's thread :) )

4. Maybe you like this time period in music more, than 70s and early 80s or it's your nostalgia about the teenage years.

You can choose any assertions, which you like from my list. :)

07.09.1991 : Stevie Nicks - Sometimes It's A Bitch (3 weeks # 1)

http://performingsongwriter.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/stevie-nicks-photo.jpg

Ex-Fleetwood Mac member Stevie Nicks finally got her first # 1 single in my chart. "Sometimes It's a Bitch" was the first single from her 1991 compilation album "Timespace – The Best of Stevie Nicks".

The album has sold about 1,600,000 copies in the United States since its release and was certified Platinum there in 1997. The album also achieved a Gold sales certification in the UK for shipping 100,000 copies. The album spent 4 weeks at #1 in New Zealand.

# 40 in United Kingdom, top 20 result in Australia (# 18).

Think you're wrong on most counts there. You come across as so patronising sometimes.

I was in my twenties by 1991. Most of your choices from the 70s and 80s are utter bilge.

I have been watching Anthony's thread and I would rather listen to SL2 20 times than watch 5 seconds of Sophie Lawrence.

I don't find Alex patronising - I can come over as patronising, mind you - but Alex is just his endearing grammar.

Alex is aware he has unique pop tastes, but he's always had great records mixed in with the err unusual.

There's room for indie 90's and pop 90's. I was well into my 30's by 1991 and liked both, I really don't care what's "cool" because the definition of what's cool changes with time, all it needs to be to me is a good example of the genre it's aiming for. That said, not going to support Sophie Lawrence though I will stick up for the original Donna Summer spector-esque delight.

Not related to your reply, just pondering chart pop generally - it's been much-maligned pretty much throughout my life, barring a few exceptionally hot periods like 1979/80. Who buys it? teenage girls mostly, and a few boys mixing things up a bit, along with older music fans. I wouldnt imagine SL2 would appeal to the public at large, mostly to male teenage music fans of the time. Doesn't mean it's bad, doesn't mean anything much, just that that's it's demographic. A woman in her 30's in 1991 might well have a different musical viewpoint....

I was going to edit my post along the lines of what you said. I think I was being too harsh there - it is Alex's second (or third?) language and so I should cut some slack.

SL2 was a dance track and I don't see dance as being a solely male-orientated genre. White indie pop definitely though (apart from Britpop).

A woman in her thirties I would have thought may be more inclined towards the CelineDion/Michael Bolton axis. Although that's probably misinformed as well.

Oh and it's not what's cool either. My enduring love of Toyah and Queen (as well as other artists) would hardly be classed as cool...

Grebo, how much you hate pure pop music ? :)

Totally disagree with the word "most" in your phrase. Only some my # 1 choices were novelty or funny songs.

I find a lot of your choices to be very weak and watery. Just uninteresting to me. No hooks, bland, obvious melodies.

I have loved pure pop music.

A lot of your choices were bland MOR Radio 2 fodder - not what I'd call pop at all.

Must ask : What is pure pop genre for you ?

I'm sure, that you dislike Britney Spears, Steps, boybands (Westlife, Boyzone, Take That) e.t.c.

Right from the last god knows how many years just off the top of my head:

The Human League

Kylie (not the SAW years)

Madonna

Abba

Blondie

The Beatles

Adam and the Ants

Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Kim Wilde

Marina and the Diamonds

Prince

(Early) Depeche Mode

OMD

Madness

Robyn

Lady Gaga (Fame Monster period)

Christina Aguilera

Girls Aloud

Sugababes

The Police

The Beach Boys

Transvision Vamp

Sophie Ellis-Bextor

and others...

Your love of Toyah and Queen shows good taste, cool is over-rated! B-)

(It's John) Not necessarily: Dana was always mums n dads, Cilla became that, and Elaine Page. The rest were pure teen records, with the Carpenters being so classy they crossed the board and appealed to all ages. Olivia was originally more family/late teen appeal crossing-over to country older fan-base, then went pop big-time.

New Seekers, Bucks Fizz, Marie Osmond, Lynsey De paul, Middle Of The Road, appealed to the 9 to 15 year old group, mostly, though obviously some older folk liked the wholesomeness too and they were featured on family shows where rock acts weren't.

I still maintain Bucks Fizz were beautifully crafted pop songs (their producers/writers remained throughout their career and could easily have been like Xenomania or any number of the current hit pop factory writers if they were around now). New Seekers/Middle Of The Road had some great pop songs amongst the more obvious stuff but they weren't ever "cool" with older kids who wouldnt be seen buying kiddie singles (15-17 age group are especially keen to look cool) B-)

28.09.1991 : Voice Of The Beehive - I Think I Love You (3 weeks # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/90357435/Voice%20Of%20The%20Beehive%20hqdefault.jpg

"I Think I Love You" is a 1970 single by Partridge Family, featuring David Cassidy, composed by songwriter Tony Romeo. The song was released at the same time as the debut of the network television sitcom The Partridge Family. During the show's first season the song was featured on the show twice as it was climbing the actual Billboard charts. The song hit number one on the U.S. Billboard Pop Singles chart and in Canada on the RPM 100 national Top Singles chart in November of that year and #1 in Australia and New Zealand in 1971.

In 1991, alternative rock band Voice of the Beehive covered the song on their album "Honey Lingers". Released as a single in the UK, their version hit number 25 on the UK Singles Chart.

I'll comment here.

Britney's Everytime is a beautiful thing.

Today, Take That's Rule the World came on to my phone during a shuffle and I didn't move on - I love it.

I can't think of a single Westlife or Boyzone song that I would ever choose to listen to.

I like pop music - Girls Aloud and Sugababes have produced a handful of great tunes each. ABBA, Erasure, Euruthmics, PSB, Madonna (and to be generous, Kylie) all excelled at various times too.

Many many other bands and singers seem to manage just one piece of pop perfection but most don't. It's slim pickings out there in pop-land. So, I'll rarely say that I like Kylie - I will just say I like Confide in Me. I wont say I like Britney - just have a soft spot for Everytime.
