02.10.1993 : Cilla Black - Through The Years (1 week # 1)

http://www.cillablack.com/wp-content/uploads/1993/09/1993-through-the-years-350x350.jpg

"Through the Years" is Cilla Black's fourteenth solo studio album, released in 1993. It features cover versions, re-recordings of some of her best known songs, duets with other singers and new songs.

Three singles were released from the album; the title track, "Through the Years" (# 54 in United Kingdom), "Heart and Soul" (duet with Dusty Springfield) and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (duet with Barry Manilow).

Cilla Black was 50 years old in 1993. Maybe it's the oldest artist, who had # 1 in my chart.

09.10.1993 : Juliana Hatfield - My Sister (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.nndb.com/people/125/000096834/juliana-hatfield-1-sized.jpg

Juliana Hatfield is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from the Boston area. She was formerly of the indie rock bands Blake Babies and Some Girls and now performs as a solo artist.

Hatfield began her solo career following the Blake Babies' breakup in 1991, releasing her first solo album "Hey Babe" in 1992. The album was one of the highest selling independent albums of 1992. Hatfield recruited a rhythm section consisting of former Moving Targets and Bullet LaVolta drummer Todd Phillips, and Thudpucker bassist Dean Fisher, and thus becoming The Juliana Hatfield Three.

Hatfield achieved alterna-rock stardom with the release of 1993's Become What You Are (recorded under the group name The Juliana Hatfield Three). Several songs from the album received regular airplay on major North American rock stations, with Hatfield's song "My Sister" becoming the biggest hit of her career, with a # 1 placing on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, and the video becoming an MTV staple.

"My Sister" was based on a real person: Hatfield's older brother's girlfriend, Meg Rafferty, who lived with the family while Hatfield was in high school. Hatfield said Rafferty, "brought her record collection to my house, which really opened my eyes to a whole lot of bands." Rafferty also took Hatfield to see the Del Fuegos and the Violent Femmes, which inspired her to form a band.

13.11.1993 : One Dove - Breakdown (2 weeks # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/275516/Dot%20Allison.jpg

One Dove was a Scottish alternative dance music group active in the early 1990s, consisting of Dot Allison, Ian Carmichael and Jim McKinven, a former member of Altered Images.

At this stage, One Dove were still primarily a club-oriented group, but for the single "White Love", an attempt was made to make their music more radio-friendly by including a commercial remix by Stephen Hague. With this increasingly commercial sound, the band became a favourite with publications such as Select and Q, and were often favourably compared with Saint Etienne, another female-fronted group who were having success with pop-dance crossover recordings.

The album was preceded by the single "Breakdown" (# 24 in UK Singles Chart) and a further track from the album, "Why Don't You Take Me," was subsequently released as a single for the Christmas market. For the B-sides of the "Why Don't You Take Me" single (which included a reworking of Dolly Parton's song "Jolene"), the group expanded to a five-piece with the addition of Ed Higgins on percussion and Colin McIlroy on guitar, and showcased a more heavily dub-influenced sound. This line-up later went into the studio to begin work on a second album, but frustrated by record industry politics, split up midway through the sessions.

"Will You Be There (In the Morning)" is a song first recorded by American rock band Heart. It was released as the first single from the band's eleventh studio album Desire Walks On and was the only Top 40 single from the album.

"Will You Be There (In the Morning)" was written by veteran songwriter and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who was responsible for writing Heart's U.S. number-two single "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" in 1990. The song was not as successful as Heart's previous collaboration with Lange, as "Will You Be There" peaked at number thirty-nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It is the last song by Heart to enter the U.S. Top 40 singles chart to date. Together with "You're The Voice" it is Heart's only song to perform better in the UK than the U.S., rising to number nineteen in the UK Singles Chart.

26.02.1994 : Ace of Base - Sign (4 weeks # 1)

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/335847/Ace%20of%20Base%20From%20The%20Sign%20Video.jpg

"The Sign" is a pop song by Swedish band Ace of Base, which was released on October 29, 1993 in Europe. The song was an international hit, reaching number two in the United Kingdom and spending six non-consecutive weeks as number one on Billboard Hot 100 chart in United States. It appeared on the band's album "Happy Nation" (titled "The Sign" in North America).

The music video of the song features the pop group singing amidst romantic and frolic images; "The Sign" was depicted as an ankh (also known as key of life) and a djed (ancient Egyptian symbol representing stability). Amid the images is a little story of a man and woman sitting side by side until the man leaves, seemingly abandoning the woman. However, he comes back with a rose and offers it to the woman. The woman graciously accepts and takes his hand. However, a bright light shines in the woman's face, drawing her away, abandoning the man and dropping the rose on the chair.

The video was released in five different edits throughout various territories. In the US, the original edit of the video was later re-edited, changing some of the shots with Jenny in the foreground from black and white to color. Other versions show more shots of the group singing with their backs in a circle, as well as more shots of Linn singing her parts in her solo black and white take.

26.03.1994 : Madder Rose - Panic On (1 week # 1)

Many of their songs, including "Panic On" (# 65 in United Kingdom) and "Car Song", were featured in John Peel's end-of-year round-up, the Festive Fifty, major feature films, and television shows. The band released three albums on Atlantic Records, and one on Cooking Vinyl, before breaking up in 1999.

02.04.1994 : Madonna - I'll Remember (5 weeks # 1)

http://images5.fanpop.com/image/quiz/888000/888542_1341246716732_298_300.jpg

"I'll Remember (Theme from With Honors)" is a song by American recording artist Madonna. It was released on March 8, 1994, by Warner Bros. Records as the soundtrack single of the film With Honors. The song was a radical change in image and style for Madonna, who had received negative feedback, both critically and commercially, for the prior two years due to the release of her book "Sex", studio album "Erotica" and the film "Body of Evidence". Warner Bros. decided to use Madonna as the vocalist for the song after noting that most of her previous soundtrack singles had achieved commercial success.

"I'll Remember" has characteristics of late-70s styled songs. It utilizes a synthesized keyboard arrangement to bring about a continuously reverberating sound of heartbeat. Madonna's voice is supported by backing vocals. Contemporary critics praised the song, hailing it as one of her best work. It was nominated for "Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or for Television" at the 37th Grammy Awards and "Best Original Song" at the 52nd Golden Globe Awards. After its release, "I'll Remember" peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her fifth song to do so. It also reached number one in Canada and Italy. The accompanying music video portrayed Madonna singing the song in a stylized recording studio. Her look and style was compared to the imagery of the music video of previous single "Rain". The androgynous portrayal of Madonna smoking in the last shot, was appreciated critically for breaking gender barriers.

In United Kingdom it debuted at ten on the chart and reached seven the next week. It was present for a total of eight weeks on the chart. According to The Official Charts Company, "I'll Remember" has sold 100,090 copies in the United Kingdom, as of August 2008. Across Europe, the song became a top 40 hit in Belgium, France, Netherlands and Switzerland. The song reached the top-ten in Australia, Ireland and Sweden, but peaked just outside top 40 in Germany.
