10.07.1971 : New Seekers - Never Ending Song Of Love (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.lynpaulwebsite.org/Resources/NS-NESOL.gif

Over the next year, the group released a number of singles to little recognition, but it was in June 1971 that they released their breakthrough hit, "Never Ending Song of Love" (the first of many hit songs to be produced by David Mackay). The song became a big hit in the UK, spending five weeks at No.2 in the singles chart and was one of the biggest selling singles of the year.

Today's New Seekers toured from 2006 with the latest line up of Paul Layton, Donna Jones, Francine Rees, Mick Flynn and Mark Hankins. A CD of the 2006 tour was released which includes all of the group's hits along with some cover versions. With a Royal Variety performance at St. James Palace, London for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and an appearance on ITV's This Morning, they completed 2006. The New Seekers helped host a garden party in 2007 at Buckingham Palace. This was repeated the following year along with a special show at The Tower of London and a return batch of concerts in British theatres. The 40th anniversary of the group in 2009 was celebrated by a 35-date UK concert tour which began at London's Shaw Theatre on 31 January and continued throughout the year. In July 2009, an album was released; It's Been Too Long – Greatest Hits and More, comprising the group's hits and some new recordings. It became a success by entering the UK album charts at No.17 – their first album to enter the chart for 35 years. In 2011 and 2012 Marty Kristian releasd two album of demo recordings from the 1970s and 1980s.

Peter Doyle died 13 October 2001, from throat cancer, aged 52. Kathy Ann Rae died 11 January 2011, from cancer, aged 53. :(

I didnt know Peter Doyle had died, thats sad. This was also a huge number one in my charts in 1971, still love it, great harmonies:)

09.10.1971 : Clodagh Rodgers - Lady Love Bug (2 weeks # 1)

http://chartarchive.org/artwork/45954-300.jpg

Despite only one more chart single, "Lady Love Bug" in autumn 1971, Rodgers continued to be a major TV star in the UK, guesting on many shows, appearing in cabaret, and becoming the face of 'Bisto' in a series of television advertisements. On Irish TV, The Clodagh Rodgers Show won an award at the Golden Rose TV festival in Montreux. She starred in many other shows, including Seaside Special for BBC Television--hosting the first show from Great Yarmouth in 1975--and The Morecambe and Wise Show in 1970. She was a regular guest of The Two Ronnies.

Rodgers also made a mark with her impressions of fellow artists such as Cilla Black, often working with Mike Yarwood, Des O'Connor, Tommy Cooper, Bob Monkhouse, and Dickie Henderson in variety.

She was a regular performer in UK resorts' summer seasons, sharing the bill with Mike and Bernie Winters, among others. This success was mirrored on stage, where she has starred in London's West End in her own show at the Talk of the Town (breaking Sammy Davis Jr.'s box office record) and in Cinderella at the London Palladium in 1971.

Her stage career was damaged when she walked out on the show Meet Me in London at London's Adelphi Theatre in April 1971. The show, a fixed 10-week fill-in between the closure of the musical Charlie Girl and a new production of Showboat, was produced by Harold Fielding, and consisted of two halves. Clodagh was due to feature in the opening half, mainly with the 30-strong singing and dancing group, The Younger Generation, with two interspersed spots, one with comics Hope and Keen, the other some songs from Rodgers. The second half was a Tommy Steele-centred spectacular that had originally been played in Las Vegas. After cuts to the running order to trim the show's length, Rodgers and her manager/husband walked out 15 minutes before curtain-up on opening night. Hope and Keen filled in for her and after a few shows singer Susan Maughan took over her spot.

Despite this, Rodgers continued with TV work through the late 1970s, and signed to Polydor Records in 1976. Despite radio airplay and television appearances, her 1977 single "Save Me" failed to chart. The track was covered in the US by Louise Mandrell who took it to number six on the US country chart in 1983. "Save Me" was also covered by the South African all-girl band Clout in 1977. Other artists who covered this song include Merrilee Rush and Helen Reddy.

16.10.1971 : Settlers - The Lightning Tree (3 weeks # 1)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_aIsBrivBL_8/S64v0myYXEI/AAAAAAAAAd4/gCthLgTNBQM/s1600/TV%20042.JPG

The Settlers were a folk-oriented group from the English West Midlands, who formed in the mid 1960s. They started out as a trio comprising Cindy Kent (vocals and tambourine), Mike Jones (vocals and guitar) and John Fyffe, but added a bassist, Mansel Davies.

The Settlers were initially known as the Birmingham Folk Four, but became known as the Settlers after their first single, "Settle Down". A six-month residency on the BBC television series, Singalong, led to support bookings on tours with, among others, Dusty Springfield, Roy Orbison and The Small Faces. The Settlers have generally been referred to as a folk group. However, like the Seekers, the successful Australian group with which they shared marked similarities, some of their material gravitated towards mainstream pop, which, taking its cue from American singer-songwriters Bob Dylan and Joan Baez and such groups as Peter, Paul and Mary, We Five and The Byrds, readily absorbed folk influences in various ways in the mid 1960s. The Settlers’ melodic style was largely settled before the advent of British folk-rock in the guise of Fairport Convention and Pentangle later in the sixties.

Their most successful record, "The Lightning Tree" (helped along due to its use as the theme tune of the British TV series Follyfoot), reached No.36 in the UK singles chart in 1971. Like the Seekers, the group also included a double bassist. The original bassist, Mansel Davies, left in 1965 to pursue a career in teaching, and was replaced by Geoffrey Srodzinski, who shared accommodation in Hampstead, London, with Tony Hooper of Strawbs. Hooper's song, "Always on My Mind", was released as a single by the Settlers early in 1967.

As has often been the case with sole female members of bands, Cindy Kent (like Judith Durham of the Seekers) attracted her own share of attention. No doubt this was due in part to her fine singing voice, photogenic good looks, and tendency to wear mini-skirts. But her public espousal of Christianity brought her into contact with the singer Cliff Richard, a prominent born again Christian, and they both contributed to various events with a Christian theme.

Kent worked at Radio 4, Radio 2, and Radio 1 (in that order), and later became a broadcaster on London’s first legal commercial radio stations, LBC and Capital Radio, as well as Sheffield’s Radio Hallam, and in 1995 was the first presenter recruited to the team for Premier Christian Radio, for whom she still works as a broadcaster. She describes herself as a high church or catholic Anglican Christian. In 2005 she was admitted as a Reader in the Church of England; on 30 June 2007 she was ordained as a deacon; the following year (2008) she was ordained as a priest, and she works part-time in a north London parish.

After Cindy Kent left the band, the line up changed from acoustic four-part pop folk harmony, to a more contemporary five-piece electric sound with Mike Jones (guitar/banjo/vocals), Andie Sheridan (female vocals),Paul Greedus (guitar/vocals), Chris Johnstone (bass/vocals) and George Jeffrey on drums. In 1974 this line up recorded an album for York Records - "The New Sound of the Settlers".

In early 1976 Valery Ann replaced Andie Sheridan as female vocalist, and the line up changed back to four piece acoustic close harmony with Mike Jones (guitar/banjo/fiddle/vocals), Paul Greedus (bass/vocals/occasional piano*),Valery Ann (vocals/tambourine/occasional guitar*),Steve Smith (vocals/guitar). It was this line up that went into the studios to record "Whichaway Billy" for Riverdale. The single was released in October 1976 soon after Valery Ann left the band to pursue a solo career.

23.10.1971 : Olivia Newton-John - Banks Of The Ohio (2 weeks # 1)

http://www.onlyolivia.com/memorabilia/sheetmusic/bankohio_2.jpg

"Banks of the Ohio" is a 19th century murder ballad, written by unknown authors, in which "Willie" invites his young lover for a walk during which she rejects his marriage proposal. Once they are alone on the river bank, he murders the young woman.

The first recording of the song was by Red Patterson's Piedmont Log Rollers on August 12, 1927. The song has since been recorded numerous times, such as by New Lost City Ramblers, The Wolfe Tones, Henry Whitter, Ernest Stoneman, Clayton McMichen, The Carter Family, Blue Sky Boys (whose version, performed in 1936, appears in the soundtrack of the 1973 film Paper Moon), Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Pete Seeger, Monroe Brothers, Joan Baez, Olivia Newton-John (with Mike Sammes, in 1971, her second commercial single in the United States), Dave Guard and the Whiskeyhill Singers, Mike Ireland and Holler, and Doc Watson, with slightly different lyrics when sung by a female. The song is similar in subject to "Pretty Polly", and likely tells the same story (Both songs date from approximately the same time, tell roughly the same story, and feature a villain named "Willie").

Another not so well known version of the song is entitled "On the Banks of the Old Pedee."

The song and its title serve as the theme song for, and title of, a long-running radio series broadcast of bluegrass music on WAMU-PBS and Bluegrass Country, hosted by Fred Bartenstein and produced for the International Bluegrass Music Museum, near the Ohio River in Owensboro, Kentucky.

It was second top 10 hit [# 6] for Olivia in UK Singles chart.

25.12.1971 : New Seekers - I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (6 weeks # 1)

http://www.lynpaulwebsite.org/Resources/NS-ILTTTWTSblue.jpg

"I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)" is a popular song which originated as the jingle "Buy the World a Coke" in the groundbreaking 1971 "Hilltop" television commercial for Coca-Cola. "Buy the World a Coke" was produced by Billy Davis, portrayed a positive message of hope and love sung by a multicultural collection of teenagers on the top of a hill. "Buy the World a Coke" repeated "It's the real thing" as Coca-Cola's marketing theme at the time.

The idea originally came to an advertising executive named Bill Backer, who was working for McCann-Erickson — the agency responsible for Coca-Cola. Backer, Roger Cook and Billy Davis were delayed at Shannon Airport in Ireland. After a forced layover with many hot tempers, they noticed their fellow travelers the next morning were talking and joking while drinking Coca-Cola. Backer wrote the line "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" on a napkin and shared it with British hit songwriters Cook and Roger Greenaway. The melody was derived from a jingle by Cook and Greenaway originally called "True Love and Apple Pie". A version of the song was recorded by Susan Shirley and released in 1971. Cook, Greenaway, Backer, and Billy Davis reworked the song and recorded it as a Coca-Cola radio commercial.

The song first aired on American radio on February 12, 1971, but failed. Although many radio stations refused to play it, Backer persuaded McCann-Erickson to film a commercial using the song. The TV commercial, entitled "Hilltop", was directed by Roberto Malenotti. The first attempt at shooting was ruined by rain and other location problems. The eventual total cost of the commercial was $250,000—an unheard of price in 1971 for an advertisement. The finished product, first aired in July 1971, featured a multicultural group of young people lip syncing the song on a hill outside Rome, Italy. The global unity of the singers is emphasized by showing that the bottles of Coke they are holding are labelled in a variety of languages. It became so popular that it was recorded by The New Seekers and by The Hillside Singers as a full-length song and became a hit.

The New Seekers later found time to record the song and sold 96,000 copies of their record in one day. The recording shot lead singer Eve Graham and the other members of New Seekers to super-stardom. "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing (in Perfect Harmony)" climbed to UK #1 and US #7 in 1971 and 1972. The song has sold over a million copies in the UK.

01.01.1972 : Carpenters - Merry Christmas Darling (2 weeks # 1)

http://991.com/newGallery/Carpenters-Merry-Christmas-D-51232.jpg

"Merry Christmas Darling" by The Carpenters was written by Richard Carpenter & Frank Pooler and originally recorded in 1970. At the time, it was first available on a 7" single from A&M Records and later in 1974 reissued as A&M 1648 and in 1977 as A&M 1991. The single went to number one on Billboard's Christmas singles chart in 1970, and did again in 1971 and 1973.

In 1978, The Carpenters issued their Christmas Portrait album, which contained a new remix of "Merry Christmas Darling". The original 1970 mix continued to be used for all single releases, however. The major difference between it and the 1978 version is a newly recorded vocal by Karen Carpenter on the latter. Richard Carpenter himself calls the original recording one of his sister's very best. The original single version of the song can be found on the compilation albums From the Top and The Essential Collection: 1965–1997.

Billboard magazine did not display Christmas singles on the Hot 100 in 1970. This song just missed the top 40 in Cash Box.

Hi Alex, this great xmas oldie (which deserves to rechart) made my number one as a double a side with Close To You in 1990 when it hit the UK charts again. The Carpenters were Faaaabulous!

19.02.1972 : Sonny And Cher - All I Ever Need Is You (2 weeks # 1)

http://www.top40db.net/img/Artist/967.jpg

Sonny & Cher were an American pop music duo, actors, singers and entertainers made up of husband-and-wife team Sonny and Cher Bono in the 1960s and 1970s. The couple started their career in the mid-1960s as R&B backing singers for record producer Phil Spector.

The pair first achieved fame with two hit songs in 1965, "Baby Don't Go" and "I Got You Babe". Signing with Atco/Atlantic Records, they released three studio albums in the late 1960s, as well as the soundtrack recording for an unsuccessful movie, Good Times. In 1972, after four years of silence, the couple returned to the studio and released two other albums under the MCA/Kapp Records label.

In the 1970s, they also positioned themselves as media personalities with two top ten TV shows in the US, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Show. The couple's career as a duo ended in 1975 following their divorce. Performing under her first name, Cher went on to a highly successful career as a solo singer and actress, while Sonny Bono was eventually elected to Congress as a Republican U.S. Representative from California. The two performers were inducted to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998, right after Sonny's death in a skiing accident.

"All I Ever Need Is You" is a popular song written by Jimmy Holiday and Eddie Reeves and recorded by Ray Charles for his 1971 album The Volcanic Action of My Soul. The most well-known version of the song is the hit single from Sonny and Cher. It reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and topped the Easy Listening chart for five weeks late in 1971. It was also a top-ten single in both the United Kingdom and Canada. Worldwide sales of the single totalled 2,250,000 copies.

Two different versions made the country music charts: one by Ray Sanders in 1971 and another by Kenny Rogers and Dottie West in 1979. The latter reached number one on the country charts.

04.03.1972 : New Seekers - Beg, Steal Or Borrow (5 weeks # 1)

http://www.lynpaulwebsite.org/Resources/NS-BegStealOrBorrow.jpg

"Beg, Steal or Borrow" was the British entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1972, performed in English by The New Seekers. The song was composed and written by Tony Cole, Steve Wolfe and Graeme Hall. On the night of the contest, the song was directed by David Mackay. The song is basically a love song directed to a former lover. The two lovers should be together and one of them will "beg, steal or borrow" in order to "bring" the other love.

"Beg, Steal or Borrow", which was chosen by viewers of BBC1's "It's Cliff Richard!" show from six shortlisted songs performed by the group on a weekly basis. They went on to finish in second place at the Eurovision final in Edinburgh, where the group received the biggest cheer of the night from the partisan audience. The song was a No.2 hit in the UK and sold well in Europe. Around this time, they also charted highly with their most successful album, We'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, which reached No.2. Another top five hit came with the next single, "Circles" in mid 1972. At the end of the year, the group took part in the BBC's anniversary TV show Fifty Years Of Music.

27.05.1972 : Pearls - Third Finger Left Hand (9 weeks # 1)

http://www.gullbuy.com/images/pearls.jpg

The Pearls were a girl singing duo from the UK in the 70s who combined together the retro girl group sound with a soulful glam style featuring Lyn Cornell and Ann Simmons from The Vernon Girls with help from Phil Swern. They released a slew of 45 singles which Rev-Ola have lovingly compiled on one disc along with some out takes. Anyone interested in the glam sound, or retro girl group sounds from the 70s like The Carpenters, the Rock Flowers or American Spring (with Brian Wilson's wife) should check this out. There is some distortion on some tracks due to the loss of the master tapes, but that doesn't detract from the listening experience too much.

The Pearls were originally created to capitalize on the fact that some obscure 60s soul and pop records were becoming hits on the dancefloors in the UK, so The Pearls released covers of Third Finger, Left Hand (a great b-side from the Martha Reeves and the Vandellas hit Jimmy Mack) and The Ronettes You Came, You Saw, You Conquered. These are some great soul and pop 60s covers.

These covers remind me of the early 70s group the Seashells, which included Vicki Brown (another Vernon Girl who later recorded with Love De-Luxe and Cerrone) and Mary Partington (her sister), who released a cover of Lesley Gore's Maybe I Know and The Best Part Of Breaking Up in 1970.

The Pearls also did some originals written for them including Lead Us Not into Temptation (which starts out the disc with a blast of James Last styled pop - which is fitting since Lyn Cornell also sang with James Last), Yo Yo (a fuzzed out handclapper), and Wizard of Love (a song that had hit written all over it that failed to chart for the girls) which all have a more 70s sound to them, but are also superfine concoctions. Wizard of Love is pretty funny too because it sounds like they are singing "Wizzer of Love". Also great is their unreleased cover of the Everly Brothers hit Bye Bye Love which is included from an unreleased acetate and has an updated (for the 70s, that is) fuzz guitar sound with some sweet handclaps and female harmonies.

Ah I love all these Alex, and you've listed two of my number ones for 1972: Sonny & Cher & New Seekers, which will eventually be featured in my listings:)

19.08.1972 : Lynsey De Paul - Sugar Me (9 weeks # 1)

http://vmcfashion.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/lynsey-de-paul-sugar-me.jpg

Lynsey de Paul is an English singer-songwriter. Allmusic journalist Craig Harris stated that "one of the first successful female singer-songwriters in England, de Paul has had an illustrious career".

de Paul took an unusual route to becoming the UK's first commercially successful female singer-songwriter. While attending Hornsey College of Art, and wanting to leave home, she started to design album sleeves for artists which required her to listen to the tracks. From income earned from album sleeve design, she got her first flat, where she turned to songwriting. Three of her earliest songs were co-written with Don Gould and recorded by Jack Wild: "Takin' It Easy" and "Bring It on Back to Me" from the album Everything's Coming Up Roses which was released by Jack in 1971. Another song copenned by Lynsey, this time with Edward Adamberry called "E.O.I.O." was recorded by Jack as a track on his 1972 album A Beautiful World and also released as a single by The Beads.

After these initial successes, de Paul was contracted to ATV-Kirshner music publishing, located above the Peter Robinson's store on Oxford Street, where she joined a group of professional songwriters that included Barry Blue and Ron Roker, resulting in revenues from songs recorded by other artists from 1971. Her breakthrough came early in 1972 as the co-writer (with Ron Roker) of The Fortunes' top 10 U.K. hit, "Storm in a Teacup". She was credited as 'L. Rubin' on the record. Around this time, she was also had chart success in the Netherlands as the writer of "On the Ride", a Top 30 hit by the Continental Uptight Band.

A few months later she was propelled into the limelight as the performer of her own hit song "Sugar Me", which reached the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart (#5), as well as the top of the singles charts in the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium, the first UK female singer-songwriter to do this. "Sugar Me" was covered in the US by Nancy Sinatra and Claudine Longet, and more recent cover versions are still being released. Noted for her keyboard skills, ability to write catchy songs and sultry looks, De Paul went on to be a regular chart and TV fixture over the next five years. Her follow up single to "Sugar Me" was the amusing "Getting a Drag" (UK #18) which was a light hearted dig at the glam rock scene.

28.02.1970 : Brotherhood Of Man - United We Stand (1 week # 1)

"United We Stand" is a popular song written by Tony Hiller and Peter Simmons. It was first recorded in 1970 by The Brotherhood of Man (in their original, pre-Eurovision line-up), becoming the band's first hit, peaking at #13 in the U.S., #9 in Canada, and #10 in the U.K.

The song was later included on an album of the same name and was followed by another hit "Where are You Going to My Love". A sound-alike cover appeared on the 1970 album Top of the Pops, Volume 10. A much more soulful and lively verson of the song was recorded by Johnny Johnson & his Bandwagon in 1971. Irish Popstars winners Six also recorded a version which appears on their album.

They were a completely different line-up then back in 1969/70 with United We Stand.

This original line-up on this track & the 2 follow-ups (Where Are You Going To My Love - #22 and Reach Out Your Hand) were Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway, John Goodison, Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie.

Much better singers than the Eurovision line-up.

Sunny had a solo #7 hit in 1974 with Doctors Orders.
