10.02.1996 : Chynna Phillips - Naked And Sacred (1 week # 1)

http://www.releaselyrics.com/f20d/chynna-phillips-naked-and-sacred.jpg

"Naked and Sacred" was Chynna Phillips' debut (and to date only) solo album, released three years after her departure from the pop group Wilson Phillips. She was the only member of the group to remain on her label, EMI, after they went on an indefinite break in late 1992. It was released on November 7, 1995 in U.S. and was a commercial failure, selling only 22,000 copies in United States according to Billboard.com.

Three singles were commercially released from the album: "Naked and Sacred" (# 62 in United Kingdom), "I Live for You", (which was featured in the 1996 movie Striptease starring Demi Moore), and "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me". The album track "Remember Me" was released in promo form and sent to U.S. radio in 1996, but was never commercially released and never charted. "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me", which was written by Diane Warren and later recorded as a duet by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill was released internationally in 1996.

17.02.1996 : TSD - Heart & Soul (3 weeks # 1)

http://www.eurokdj.com/images/singles/t/sin_tsd-heart_and_soul.jpg

Very non-typical Eurodance # 1 for my retrospective.

TSD are a British girl pop group, who had two non-successful singles "Heart and Soul" (# 69) and "Baby I Love You" (# 64). One of its members, Claire Richards, became a member of Steps, whose debut single - "5, 6, 7, 8" - charted fifty places higher at #14.

The name "TSD" means very little; it was formed by taking three random letters out of a Scrabble bag. However, Newsround presenter Chris Rogers suggested it should stand for "Three Sexy Dames".

Alex - it seems that you don't really care about the quality of a song if it contains a singer of both genders. Daniel O'Donnell and Mary Duff? That's just obscenely bland.

I'm really surprised to see Garbage at number 1. It's a pity you don't add some thoughts of your own to the reviews. I mean, what is it about Only Happy When it Rains that makes you like it?

I'm also happy to see You'll See at number 1. It's one of her best pre-1998 songs.

Hi Alex, the usual fascinating mix here, and I'm happy to say you did good with Kylie & Nick at the top - they didnt peak at 1 on mine (Boooo!) though On The Bible did. yes, Deuce! It's a forgotten gem. Great to see Garbage, more Madonna (even more madonna toppers than me!), Evan Dando & Kirsty, Go Go's on top too!

John, thanks for all your comments. I'm glad that you love this music journey in the past.

This huge success for some Madonna singles was unpredictable. Such chart toppers as "This Used To Be My Playground" and "Who's That Girl" were a surprise even for me. :)

What a completely horrible cover version. Perhaps it's just that this song doesn't lend itself to alternative versions - even Counting Crows made a complete mess of it.

I don't like the original "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell.

Anthony,

1. Based on my narrow music taste usually there is not many contenders for my # 1s. Very often I like only some songs in 1-2 months period. Daniel & Mary duet was # 1 in June / July 1995.

Songs, which I like from those 2 months :

03.06 : Mary Chapin Carpenter - Shut Up and Kiss Me

10.06 : Daniel O'Donnell and Mary Duff - Secret Love, Dusty Springfield and Daryl Hall - Wherever Would I Be ?, Whigfield - Think Of You

17.06 : Human League - Filling Up With Heaven, Cardigans - Carnival

24.06 : Powder - Afrodisiac, Kirsty MacColl & Evan Dando - Perfect Day, Amy Grant - Big Yellow Taxi

01.07 : -

08.07 : -

15.07 : -

22.07 : Belly - Seal My Fate

29.07 : Sheryl Crow - Run, Baby, Run

Maybe "Wherever Would I Be ?" could be more deserved # 1, but I choose "Save Your Love".

2. I thought about my future favourite songs lists (for any decade or even all-time). I would try to post my thoughts about the songs in that thread.

Don't know why # 1 for Garbage was a surprise for you, some soft pop-rock (???) songs were # 1s in my retrospective before.

3. "You'll See" is in my top 3 favourite Madonna songs (with "Material Girl" and "Dear Jessie"). It's the one from last Madonna's # 1s here, because I don't like the most her singles from post "Evita" period. "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and maybe "The Power Of Goodbye" and "Love Profusion" have a chance for future # 1 positions.

24.02.1996 : Crush - Jellyhead (7 weeks # 1)

http://popdose.com/wp-content/uploads/Donna-Air.jpg

Crush is the second reincarnation of Byker Groove, who had a # 1 single in 1995.

English television presenter and actress Donna Air started her career age 10 on the hit BBC series "Byker Grove", just over 20 years ago. She then became part of pop duo Crush touring America, Japan and South East Asia. They recorded two singles : "Jellyhead" (a hit in Australia, # 50 in UK) and "Luv'd Up" (# 45 in UK).

I wouldn't have thought the melody was straight forward enough in Only Happy When it Rains for you to enjoy.

Maybe it's not last # 1 for Garbage. At last two their singles have a good chance for win.

Missed # 1 chance: Cliff Richard & Helen Hobson - The Wedding

Top 40 UK single from "Heathcliff" (musical), based loosely on the novel "Wuthering Heights" :) by Emily Bronte, though focussing on the character of Heathcliff and adapting the story to fit in with the staging and production. A cast recording of the show was released in October 1996 to coincide with the start of the tour and several singles were issued, including 'A Misunderstood Man", "Had To Be", "Be With Me Always" and "The Wedding", a duet with Helen Hobson.

Unfortunately I didn't find this single in Web, but I love amazing ballad "I Do Not Love You Issabella", which was on "The Wedding" single.

Missed # 1 chance : Gina G - Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit

"Ooh Aah Just a Little Bit" is a Grammy Award-nominated song performed by Australian singer Gina G. Released as a single on 25 March 1996, it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart almost two months later.

The song was the United Kingdom's entry in Eurovision. Although the song only finished in eighth place in the contest it was successful in Europe. The song was also successful in United States, a rarity for Eurovision entries, peaking at #12 on Billboard Hot 100.

Gina G reached # 1 in my Eurovision rate, but it was very weak contest and she still only 1 from 12 British winners, who wasn't # 1 in weekly charts.

1969 : Lulu - Boom Bang-a-Bang

1971 : Clodagh Rodgers - Jack In A Box

1977 : Lynsey de Paul and Mike Moran - Rock Bottom

1978 : Co-Co - Bad Old Days

1980 : Prima Donna - Love Enough For Two

1981 : Bucks Fizz - Making Your Mind Up

1983 : Sweet Dreams - I'm Never Giving Up

1985 : Vikki Watson - Love Is

1991 : Samantha Janus - A Message to Your Heart

1996 : Gina G - Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit

2002 : Jessica Garlick - Come Back

2007 : Scooch - Flying The Flag (For You)

25.05.1996 : Catatonia - Lost Cat (4 weeks # 1)

http://britpopnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Catatonia.jpg

Catatonia were an alternative rock band from Wales who gained popularity in the mid to late 1990s. The band consisted of Cerys Matthews on vocals, Mark Roberts on guitar, Paul Jones on bass, Owen Powell on guitar, and Aled Richards on drums.

It is rumoured that Matthews and Roberts first met in Cardiff when she was busking. They hit it off and began writing songs together in 1992. For four years after this they were also in a relationship, many aspects of this being played out publicly in their lyrics. The couple came across the word catatonia, believing it to mean a sense of extreme pleasure and sleep, and the band was subsequently originally called 'Sweet Catatonia'. On discovering the real meaning of the word (i.e. a psychiatric symptom of certain mental disorders) they dropped the prefix 'sweet'

"Lost Cat" (# 41 in United Kingdom) is the second single after "Sweet Catatonia" from their debut album "Way Beyond Blue". In the music video Cerys climbed on the lamppost like a cat.

22.06.1996 : Sleeper - Sale Of The Century (2 weeks # 1)

108878709.jpg

Second # 1 single for Sleeper after "Vegas" in 1995 and their first top 10 single in United Kingdom. "Sale of the Century" is a song by English Britpop band Sleeper, written by the band's vocalist/guitarist Louise Wener and drummer Andy Maclure. It was the second single to be released from their second album "The It Girl" in 1996. It was their most successful album, selling over 300,000 copies and got platinum certification in England alone.

After the band split in 1998 frontwoman Louise Wener began a writing career and has written four novels : Goodnight Steve McQueen, The Big Blind (aka The Perfect Play), The Half Life of Stars and Worldwide Adventures In Love.

13.07.1996 : Shampoo - Girl Power (4 weeks # 1)

http://img.maniadb.com/images/album/166/166383_1_f.jpg

Shampoo' girls are back with new album "Girl Power" (the phrase thought to have come from a 1993 Helen Love record and much used by Riot Grrrl devotees, later also used as a slogan by Spice Girls) their sales were in decline, and the third Shampoo album "Absolute Shampoo" was released solely on the Internet in 2000, due to an inability to acquire a recording contract. The duo disbanded shortly afterwards.

First single with the same title "Girl Power" reached # 25 in United Kingdom. Shampoo became the first group [before Steps, H & Claire and allSTARS*] with 4th consecutive # 1 singles from their debut.

Second # 1 for Catatonia.

"You've Got A Lot To Answer For" is a third Catatonia's single, which taken from debut album "Way Beyond Blue". The single was the band's first Top 40 hit, peaking at No.35, largely in part due to a campaign started by Radio 1. B-side "Do You Believe In Me" became a huge fan favourite live, and has been said to document the break-up of Cerys and guitarist Mark Roberts' relationship.

Sindy doing a cheesy cover version of Whigfield's hit "Saturday Night", which was released in 1996. Didn't do that well in the UK Singles Chart and only reached number 70. The single was produced by Stock and Aitken.
