I have to wonder how you can like Catatonia and hate Bjork when they're not a million miles apart, vocally.
I have to wonder how you can like Catatonia and hate Bjork when they're not a million miles apart, vocally.

Catatonia are traditionally song structured though, Bjork has always been more avante-garde, odd timing, experimental and Yoko Ono-esque - I've rarely met anyone in real life that buys Bjork and she's a real polarising love/hate artist (though I do like her, it's often hit and miss, love/dislike)

After # 2 hit "Granite Statue" finally they got first # 1 single.

02.11.1996 : Salad - I Want You (1 week # 1)

http://www.sleepwalkingmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/salad2.jpg

Salad were a UK-based pop music group formed in London in 1992, that included Dutch vocalist/keyboardist Marijne van der Vlugt, bassist Pete Brown, drummer Rob Wakeman and guitarist Paul Kennedy.

Van der Vlugt had previously worked as a model, and as a video jockey for MTV Europe. Early singles reached top 75 of the UK Singles Chart, with "Motorbike to Heaven" just missing out on a top 40 placing. First album "Drink Me" (1995) was No. 16 in UK Albums Chart. The next three singles were all minor chart hits (include "I Want You", # 60 in UK), but second album "Ice Cream" (1997) failed to match the success of the first. The band were dropped by Island Records and ultimately disbanded in 1998.

09.11.1996 : Alisha's Attic - Alisha Rules The World (3 weeks # 1)

http://covers.mp3eagle.com/covers/54/54841/alb_254170_big2.jpg

Alisha's Attic were an English duo group of the 1990s and early 2000s. The two members were sisters Shelly and Karen Poole, born in Barking and Chadwell Heath respectively. Their father is Brian Poole of 1960s group "Brian Poole and the Tremeloes". The "Alisha" referred to in the group's name is a fictional character created by Shelly and Karen, based on an imaginary childhood friend of Shelly's. "Attic" is a reference to the attic studio belonging to a composer friend, Terry Martin, where they originally recorded demos.

Discounting the sisters' teenage material (recorded as "Keren & Chelle"), Karen and Shelly's recording career began with the single "I Am, I Feel", a chart hit in the UK, and this was quickly followed by their debut album "Alisha Rules the World" in November 1996. They were nominated for a 1997 Brit Award for Best Newcomer, losing out to Kula Shaker. They were also nominated that year for an Ivor Novello for the best lyrical and melodic composition.

Titled track "Alisha Rules the World" (# 12 in UK Singles chart) was the second single from their platinum debut album (only in UK sold 400,000 copies).

Most possible it's the last Madonna's # 1 single in my retrospective.

28.12.1996 : Madonna - Don't Cry For Me Argentina (2 weeks # 1)

http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/bb/bf/7e/bbbf7e8827b18d57f9626bc6156732cf.jpg

"Don't Cry for Me Argentina" is a song from the 1978 musical "Evita" with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Sung by the title character Eva Perón, it was titled "It's Only Your Lover Returning" before Rice settled on the eventual name. It appears early in the second act as Evita addresses the crowd from the balcony of the Casa Rosada and features a sweeping melody tied to broad emotional themes of regret and defiance, characteristic of Lloyd Webber's most popular songs.

Julie Covington played the lead role of Eva Perón on the original 1976 album from which the single was released. It reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1977 for a week, selling almost a million physical copies in the United Kingdom.

American singer-songwriter Madonna recorded her version of the song for her starring role in the 1996 film "Evita". It was released in December 1996 as the second single from the soundtrack "Evita".

The single turned out to be a big worldwide hit, taking top 10 spot in the most European countries, most notably in France, where it became her second number one (after "La Isla Bonita"). It was a US top ten hit, peaking at number eight. The song was top 3 single in UK and sold 340,000 copies.

Hi Alex,

we didn't have any crossovers this year, though an interesting mixed bunch as usual. I don't think any of your toppers made my top 10! That's a first B-)

cheers

1997 would be more mainstream, but there is not any single year without a surprises at # 1.

25.01.1997 : Texas - Say What You Want (1 week # 1)

After # 2 single "Runaway" Irish pop band Corrs got their first # 1 single.

01.02.1997 : Corrs - Love To Love You (3 weeks # 1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a9/Love_to_Love_You_music_video.jpg

The Corrs are an Irish band that combines pop rock with traditional Celtic folk music. The group consists of the Corr siblings: three sisters Andrea (lead vocals, tin whistle); Sharon (violin, vocals); Caroline (drums, percussion, piano, vocals); and their brother Jim (guitar, piano, keyboards, vocals). They are from Dundalk, Co. Louth, in Ireland.

"Love to Love You" was the fourth single from their debut album "Forgiven, Not Forgotten". Single wasn't very successful and reached only # 25 in Australia and # 62 in UK, but album sold some millions copies worldwide (mostly in UK, Ireland and Australia).

The video for the fourth single is a compilation of some concert footage filmed at live gigs in and around Dublin in July 1996, interspersed with short clips of The Corrs on board an aircraft carrier. There wasn't enough time to make a more complicated video. Most of the scenes in the video can also be found in the documentary "The Right Time".

22.02.1997 : No Doubt - Don't Speak (3 weeks # 1)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uyrRswyqb9E/UZrAlbiOxAI/AAAAAAAAKVk/gdfYmweqTPY/s1600/GwenStefani90s.jpg

"Don't Speak" is a song by American rock band No Doubt. It was released in 1996 as the third single from the band's third studio album "Tragic Kingdom" (1995). Vocalist Gwen Stefani wrote the song about her bandmate and ex-boyfriend Tony Kanal shortly after he ended their seven-year relationship together.

Internationally, the song was very successful. In February 1997, it peaked at number one in United Kingdom and Ireland for three weeks. Elsewhere in Europe, "Don't Speak" reached the top position in Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Before the music starts, at the beginning of the music video, there is a scene of Kanal picking a rotten fruit from a tree (these scenes are usually cut out when VH1 airs this video). The majority of the music video for "Don't Speak" takes place in a garage as the band plays. Other scenes tell the story of how the media mainly focused on Stefani while the band was always in the background. The video ends with Kanal replacing the peach in the tree, which is actually footage of Kanal in reverse pulling the peach off.

Sinead Quinn performed it on the UK BBC TV series "Fame Academy" in 2002. Her cover version is available on the debut single "I Can't Break Down".

I do like Don't Speak a lot.

I hope Texas' Halo makes it to number 1. It's so much better than Say What You Want.

15.03.1997 : Cathy Dennis - Waterloo Sunset (5 weeks # 1)

"Waterloo Sunset" is a song by British rock band Kinks. It was released as a single in 1967, and featured on their album "Something Else by The Kinks". Composed and produced by Kinks frontman Ray Davies, "Waterloo Sunset" is one of the band's best known and most acclaimed songs in most territories, having been a #2 hit in UK, top 10 hit in Australia and New Zealand and most of Europe. It is also their first single that is available in true stereo.

"Waterloo Sunset" has been covered many times, including British dance-pop artist Cathy Dennis' version (third single from her third album "Am I the Kinda Girl?"). # 11 in UK Singles Chart.

Second # 1 single and another top 10 hit in UK (peaked at # 6) for Australian dance pop singer Gina G.

Two things I dislike - cover versions and Waterloo Sunset.

And this was a particularly bad cover version of "Waterloo Sunset". For someone who went on to have a prolific songwriting career, this is something of an embarrassment in her discography, surely?
