The list with my personal # 1s from 1997-1999 period was compiled some years ago, so the speed of this thread would be faster, than before.

I must ask this question : "Do you have any interest in my # 1s from 2000s ?"

I can continue this retrospective with 2000-2003 (minimum, maybe even with some more years) period or came back in 60s with "Vintage # 1s" or even start another huge thread.

Unlucky Gina G won my Eurovision rate in 1996, but didn't reach # 1 in my weekly chart. Some artists wasn't my favourite in Eurovision, but have # 1 singles in my retrospective.

There are :

1972 : New Seekers - Beg, Steal or Borrow [# 2, behind Irish "Ceol An Ghra"]

1974 : Olivia Newton-John - Love Live Love [# 5]

1976 : Brotherhood Of Man - Save Your Kisses For Me [# 2, behind Norwegian "Mata Hari"]

and the last British ESC winner, which finished on the second place in my rate behind Estonian entry "Keelatud Maa" by Maarja-Liis Ilus.

10.05.1997 : Katrina & The Waves - Love Shine A Light (4 weeks # 1)

http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/katrin-one-hit.jpg

"Love Shine a Light" was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, performed by Katrina and the Waves as the 1997 Eurovision entrant by the UK. It is the group's biggest success since "Walking on Sunshine" 12 years earlier.

The song was composed by the groups's guitarist and regular songwriter Kimberley Rew following a request from the brother of the group's drummer Alex Cooper for an anthem for The Samaritans in recognition of that organization's thirtieth anniversary, Cooper's brother being a member of the Swindon branch of the Samaritans. In a 1997 interview Katrina and the Waves lead vocalist Katrina Leskanich indicated that it was members of the Samaritans who opined that "Love Shine a Light" "was the type of song which would win the Eurovision Song Contest and at the last minute, Katrina and the Waves submitted the song for consideration to vie in the Great British Song Contest, the national preselection round for the UK in Eurovision 1997.

"Love Shine a Light" did indeed win Eurovision 1997 easily: with its first 12 point score being awarded by Austria the fourth reporting jury "Love Shine a Light" assumed permanent possession of first place on the scoreboard with its final vote tally an unprecedented 227 points besting the second place finishing Eurovision 1997 entrant, the entrant for Ireland: "Mysterious Woman", by 70 points.

The song wasn't supported by Radio 1 and reached only # 3 in UK Singles Chart, but became a European hit [# 2 in Norway and Austria, # 4 in Netherlands, # 5 in Ireland and Sweden, # 6 in Belgium, # 8 in Finland].

Hi Alex, I'm more interested in how you view music from before you were born, myself, and it is more Retro than 2000's though I would imagine younger music fans, and there are way more, might be more keen on the 2000's. B-)

21.06.1997 : Cathy Dennis - When Dreams Turn To Dust (5 weeks # 1)

http://img2.lsistatic.com/artists/8rfnt/a_32394_1128045692.jpg

Third # 1 single for British singer Cathy Dennis, also she has three number ones as songwriter (worldwide hits "Toxic", "I Kissed A Girl" and "Once" by Diana Vickers). Most possible Cathy Dennis is only one person, who had my personal award "Song Of The Year" as singer ["Waterloo Sunset"] and a songwriter ["Toxic" by Britney Spears] . Bjorn & Benny from ABBA also could have the same achivement, but "Another You, Another Me" (a titled track of H & Claire album), wasn't chosen as single.

"When Dreams Turn To Dust" was the final single on her third album "Am I That Kinda Girl?" and the last to be released by Dennis. The single was only released in the UK and reached No. 43 in August 1997.

Let's back in 1995.

Missed # 1 chance : Beautiful South - Dream A Little Dream

More my favourite cover versions. Best Beautiful South's single, which was released only in Switzerland and was illegal as # 1 for this thread. :(

Music video contains scenes from the movie "French Kiss". One of the best singles from 1995.

Catatonia are traditionally song structured though, Bjork has always been more avante-garde, odd timing, experimental and Yoko Ono-esque - I've rarely met anyone in real life that buys Bjork and she's a real polarising love/hate artist (though I do like her, it's often hit and miss, love/dislike)

Well done, John. :cheer:

I only can add Kate Bush's name in this list.

I hope Texas' Halo makes it to number 1. It's so much better than "Say What You Want".

I'm sorry, Anthony. "Halo" even wasn't a contender for top 5. But there is another # 1 single for Scottish pop rock band.

09.08.1997 : Texas - Black Eyed Boy (1 week # 1)

http://www.sharleenspiteri.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/Texas-White-On-Blonde.jpg

"Black Eyed Boy" is the third single from Scottish rock band Texas's album "White on Blonde". The song was released on 28 July 1997 and reached #5 on the Official UK Singles Chart.

"Who Wants to Live Forever" is a song by the English rock band Queen. It is the sixth track on the album "A Kind of Magic", released in June 1986, and was written by lead guitarist Brian May for the soundtrack to the film "Highlander". The song peaked at No. 24 in UK charts.

In 1997 Sarah Brightman covered this track on her album "Time To Say Goodbye". "Who Wants to Live Forever" was the fifth single from this album and reached # 45 in United Kingdom. It's fifth # 1 single for Sarah Brightman in my retrospective.

20.09.1997 : Sundays - Summertime (2 weeks # 1)

http://www.leftoffthedial.com/sundays1.jpg

The Sundays were an English alternative rock band. The band formed in the late 1980s and released three albums in the 1990s. The band's beginnings came with the meeting of Harriet Wheeler and guitarist David Gavurin at university. Wheeler had played gigs with 'Cruel Shoes' an early incarnation of the band Jim Jiminee. The duo soon augmented the band with bassist Paul Brindley and drummer Patrick Hannan.

The Sundays secured a recording contract with Rough Trade Records. Their debut single was "Can't Be Sure". Their first album "Reading, Writing and Arithmetic" was released in 1990, along with their next single "Here's Where the Story Ends". The album was a UK Top 5 hit.

In 1997 their third album "Static & Silence" was followed by the release of their most successful single to date, "Summertime", which made UK Top 15. The album itself reached UK Top 10. However, the band has been on a lengthy hiatus since those releases, with Wheeler and Gavurin focusing on raising their two children.

11.10.1997 : Tanya Donelly - Pretty Deep (2 weeks # 1)

Tanya Donelly is an American Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and guitarist based in New England who co-founded Throwing Muses with her stepsister Kristin Hersh. She then went on to work in The Breeders and Belly in the 1990s. In the late 1990s, she settled into a solo recording career, working largely with musicians connected to the Boston music scene.

Donelly is best known for her Grammy nominated work in the mid-1990s as lead vocalist and songwriter for Belly, when she scored a national radio and music television hit with her composition "Feed the Tree". In November 1996, Donelly put together a group of musicians to tour internationally with, just prior to her first solo release "Sliding & Diving" (EP).

Attention : 90's Pure Pop invasion was started in the late 1997.

Not my favourite Aqua's single and even non favourite song about Barbie doll (YVA :yahoo: ), but it's classic cheesy pop song.

25.10.1997 : Aqua - Barbie Girl (4 weeks # 1)

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_aG8Cg0keuw/TyOI8WC1dfI/AAAAAAAAGKA/BXQ_o6c6Tbk/s1600/barbie-girl.jpg

"Barbie Girl" is a song by the Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua. It was released in May 1997 as their third single overall, and the first United Kingdom release. The song is included on the album "Aquarium" and was written by Claus Norreen and Soren Nystrom Rasted after the group saw an exhibit on kitsch culture.

The song topped the charts worldwide, particularly in European countries such as the UK, where it was a number-one hit for three weeks. It was also on top of the charts in Australia for the same length of time, and debuted and peaked at No. 7 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on 6 September 1997 and It remains Aqua's biggest hit single in the US to date, and their only one to reach the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

The lyrics of the song are about Barbie and Ken, the dolls made by Mattel. Both the song and its music video feature Lene Nystrøm as Barbie and René Dif as Ken. As such, the lyrics drew the ire of Barbie's corporate owners, and a lawsuit was filed by Mattel. A footnote on the back of the Aquarium CD case precisely stated that the song was "a social comment and was not sponsored or approved by the maker of the doll."

It has sold 1.79 million copies in United Kingdom as of November 2012, making it the thirteenth best-selling single in the UK and most best-selling single from this thread.

Maybe it's not such impressive start in compare with Aqua and their "Barbie Girl", but in some years Steps became the best group after ABBA.

22.11.1997 : Steps - 5, 6, 7, 8 (4 weeks # 1)

http://andys-backing-tracks.webs.com/5678Steps.jpg

Steps are a British pop group consisting of members Claire Richards (ex-TSD member and future part of H & Claire), Faye Tozer, Lisa Scott-Lee, Ian "H" Watkins and Lee Latchford-Evans.

Over the five years they were together, Steps achieved a series of charting singles between 1997 and 2001 including two number-one singles in the UK (one a double A-side), two number-one albums in the UK, 14 consecutive top 5 singles in the UK and a string of hits throughout Europe.

Their first single "5, 6, 7, 8" was a techno line dance song. Though not typical of what became their style, it was their first hit both in the UK and internationally. Despite only peaking at number 14, the single achieved considerable longevity in the fast-paced singles climate of 1997-1998, racking up over four months on the UK chart. The track remains one of the highest selling singles never to reach the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Its release in Australia gave the group their first number one in 1998.

The group were signed by Jive Records and following the success of their debut single, songwriter Pete Waterman became involved in the project. Waterman's stated intention was to try to recreate the sound of ABBA and blend it with a more modern style.

Will Steps have more # 1 singles, than ABBA in my retrospective ? Will Claire Richards have more # 1s than anybody else ?

Follow the thread and you would know it very soon. :)

It's no surprise that you like Say What You Want and Black Eyed Boy but not Halo and I like Halo and not those other two. Our brains certainly work very differently when it comes to music.

There is another choice for people, who blame my music taste. Haters, it's for you. :)

Very predictable # 1 and third 90s pop classic in row.

20.12.1997 : Vanilla - No Way, No Way (4 weeks # 1)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i2guU93bWF4/UJwyvWlSnUI/AAAAAAAACMg/fIT33QXEaBs/s1600/no%20way%20no%20way.jpg

Vanilla were a girl band from Barnet, England. The band members consisted of sisters Frances and Alison Potter plus two friends Alida Swart and Sharon Selby. The group were managed by Greg Boraman. They released just two singles for EMI in the late 1990s.

I don't understand all this HUGE hate for this song. "No Way, No Way" is a good cheesy pop track, which was # 14 in official UK singles chart and won in a battle for Christmas # 1 against Steps in my chart.

Hi Alex,

1 number one overlaps with mine (Texas). I have to say I heard Barbie Girl, a record Ive never had much time for, on holiday last week, with the video and I was actually surprised at how decent it is as a pop record. It's not airhead pop it's knowing intentionally barbed-if-jolly pop making a point in an amusing way. I'm converted at long last.....!
